    Motion estimation and CABAC VLSI co-processors for real-time high-quality H.264/AVC video coding

    Real-time and high-quality video coding is gaining a wide interest in the research and industrial community for different applications. H.264/AVC, a recent standard for high performance video coding, can be successfully exploited in several scenarios including digital video broadcasting, high-definition TV and DVD-based systems, which require to sustain up to tens of Mbits/s. To that purpose this paper proposes optimized architectures for H.264/AVC most critical tasks, Motion estimation and context adaptive binary arithmetic coding. Post synthesis results on sub-micron CMOS standard-cells technologies show that the proposed architectures can actually process in real-time 720 Ă— 480 video sequences at 30 frames/s and grant more than 50 Mbits/s. The achieved circuit complexity and power consumption budgets are suitable for their integration in complex VLSI multimedia systems based either on AHB bus centric on-chip communication system or on novel Network-on-Chip (NoC) infrastructures for MPSoC (Multi-Processor System on Chip

    Medical and surgical interventions to improve the quality of life for endometriosis patients: a systematic review

    Endometriosis impairs the quality of life (QoL) of many women, including their social relationships, daily activity, productivity at work, and family planning. The aim of this review was to determine the instruments used to examine QoL in previous clinical studies of endometriosis and to evaluate the effect of medical and surgical interventions for endometriosis on QoL. We conducted a systematic search and review of studies published between January 2010 and December 2020 using MEDLINE. Search terms included “endometriosis” and “quality of life.” We only selected studies that used a standardized questionnaire to evaluate QoL before and after medical or surgical interventions. Only articles in the English language were examined. The initial search identified 720 results. After excluding duplicates and applying inclusion criteria, 37 studies were selected for analysis. We found that the two scales most frequently used to measure QoL were the Short Form-36 health survey questionnaire (SF-36) and the Endometriosis Health Profile-30 (EHP-30). Many medical and surgical treatments demonstrated comparable benefits in pain control and QoL improvement. There is no clear answer as to what is the best treatment for improving QoL because each therapy must be personalized for the patient and depends on the woman’s goals. In conclusion, women must be informed about endometriosis and given easily accessible information to improve treatment adherence and their QoL

    Three cases of bone metastases in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors

    Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare, but represent the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. Tumor resection is the treatment of choice for localized disease. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib, sunitinib) are the standard therapy for metastatic or unresectable GISTs. GISTs usually metastasize to the liver and peritoneum. Bone metastases are uncommon. We describe three cases of bone metastases in patients with advanced GISTs: two women (82 and 54 years of age), and one man (62 years of age). Bones metastases involved the spine, pelvis and ribs in one patient, multiple vertebral bodies and pelvis in one, and the spine and iliac wings in the third case. The lesions presented a lytic pattern in all cases. Two patients presented with multiple bone metastases at the time of initial diagnosis and one patient after seven years during the follow-up period. This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of the lesions and may help clinicians to manage bones metastases in GIST patients

    The aim of the study was to evaluate if RME (Rapid Maxillary Expansion) therapy could improve both the patency of the nasal airways and the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS). 42 children with a case history of oral breathing, snoring and night time apnoeas were studied. Selection criteria were: no adenotonsillar hypertrophy, Body Mass Index (BMI) below 24 and a malocclusion characterised by a narrow upper jaw, determined by postero-anterior cephalometric evaluation. Patients underwent an ENT visit with auditory and respiratory tests including daytime a sleepiness questionnaire, a 19-channel polysomnography, and an orthognatodontic examination; finally the patient underwent X-rays investigations. All the investigations were carried out before orthodontic therapy (T0), after one month (T1) with the device still on, and 4 months after the end of the orthodontic treatment which lasted for about 6-12 months (T2). All the changes induced by RME on the upper jaw and nasal septum were analysed by postero-anterior cephalometric evaluation in T0, T1 and T2. In all treated cases, the authors obtained an opening of the midpalatal suture; this was confirmed both by intraoral occlusal X-rays and postero-anterior cephalograms. The results reported by the 42 patients studied show that the R.M.E. therapy widens the nasal fossa and releases the septum thus restoring a normal nasal airflow with disappearance of obstructive sleep disordered breathing. Changing the anatomic structure, RME brought a significant functional improvement. Therefore the orthodontist can play an important role in the interdisciplinary treatment of OSAS patients

    Formal Verification and Co-Simulation in the Design of a Synchronous Motor Control Algorithm

    Mechatronic systems are a class of cyber-physical systems, whose increasing complexity makes their validation and verification more and more difficult, while their requirements become more challenging. This paper introduces a development method based on model-based design, co-simulation and formal verification. The objective of this paper is to show the applicability of the method in an industrial setting. An application case study comes from the field of precision servo-motors, where formal verification has been used to find acceptable intervals of values for design parameters of the motor controller, which have been further explored using co-simulation to find optimal values. The reported results show that the method has been applied successfully to the case study, augmenting the current model-driven development processes by formal verification of stability, formal identification of acceptable parameter ranges, and automatic design-space exploration
