Weight 2 blocks of general linear groups and modular Alvis-Curtis duality
We obtain the structure of weight 2 blocks and [2:1]-pairs of q-Schur
algebras, and compute explicitly the modular Alvis-Curtis duality for weight 2
blocks of finite general linear groups in non-defining characteristic.Comment: 27 pages; to appear in Int. Math. Res. No
3D ultrasound image reconstruction based on VTK
Three dimensional (3D) ultrasound image reconstruction based on two dimensional (2D) images has become a famous method for analyzing some anatomy related to abnormalities. 3D ultrasound image reconstruction system is required in order to view the specific part of the object and so that it can be used for analysis purpose. In this paper, 2D images were taken by using untracked free-hand system. Few sets of 2D images were taken with different number of slices and after some 2D image processing, 3D reconstruction is done by using surface rendering techniques by implementing marching cubes algorithm in Visual C++ 6.0 with Visualization Toolkit (VTK) toolbox. From the experiment, we can conclude that in order to reconstruct a better 3D image, the aid of tracking sensor is important. Besides, another parameter such as the number of slices of the images and image processing technique will affect the smoothness of the reconstructed 3D image
Short-range correlations in dilute atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling
We study the short-range correlation strength of three dimensional spin half
dilute atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling. The interatomic interaction
is modeled by the contact pseudopotential. In the high temperature limit, we
derive the expression for the second order virial expansion of the
thermodynamic potential via the ladder diagrams. We further evaluate the second
order virial expansion in the limit that the spin-orbit coupling constants are
small, and find that the correlation strength between the fermions increases as
the forth power of the spin-orbit coupling constants. At zero temperature, we
consider the cases in which there are symmetric spin-orbit couplings in two or
three directions. In such cases, there is always a two-body bound state of zero
net momentum. In the limit that the average interparticle distance is much
larger than the dimension of the two-body bound state, the system primarily
consists of condensed bosonic molecules that fermions pair to form; we find
that the correlation strength also becomes bigger compared to that in the
absence of spin-orbit coupling. Our results indicate that generic spin-orbit
coupling enhances the short-range correlations of the Fermi gases. Measurement
of such enhancement by photoassociation experiment is also discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
A heterotic sigma model with novel target geometry
We construct a (1,2) heterotic sigma model whose target space geometry
consists of a transitive Lie algebroid with complex structure on a Kaehler
manifold. We show that, under certain geometrical and topological conditions,
there are two distinguished topological half--twists of the heterotic sigma
model leading to A and B type half--topological models. Each of these models is
characterized by the usual topological BRST operator, stemming from the
heterotic (0,2) supersymmetry, and a second BRST operator anticommuting with
the former, originating from the (1,0) supersymmetry. These BRST operators
combined in a certain way provide each half--topological model with two
inequivalent BRST structures and, correspondingly, two distinct perturbative
chiral algebras and chiral rings. The latter are studied in detail and
characterized geometrically in terms of Lie algebroid cohomology in the
quasiclassical limit.Comment: 83 pages, no figures, 2 references adde
Valley filter in strain engineered graphene
We propose a simple, yet highly efficient and robust device for producing
valley polarized current in graphene. The device comprises of two distinct
components; a region of uniform uniaxial strain, adjacent to an out-of-plane
magnetic barrier configuration formed by patterned ferromagnetic gates. We show
that when the amount of strain, magnetic field strength, and Fermi level are
properly tuned, the output current can be made to consist of only a single
valley contribution. Perfect valley filtering is achievable within
experimentally accessible parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; minor corrections, updated Figs. 2 and 3, added

Proteomics of Cytochrome c Oxidase-Negative versus -Positive Muscle Fiber Sections in Mitochondrial Myopathy
The mosaic distribution of cytochrome c oxidase(+) (COX+) and COX - muscle fibers in mitochondrial disorders allows the sampling of fibers with compensated and decompensated mitochondrial function from the same individual. We apply laser capture microdissection to excise individual COX+ and COX- fibers from the biopsies of mitochondrial myopathy patients. Using mass spectrometry-based proteomics, we quantify >4,000 proteins per patient. While COX+ fibers show a higher expression of respiratory chain components, COX- fibers display protean adaptive responses, including upregulation of mitochondrial ribosomes, translation proteins, and chaperones. Upregulated proteins include C1QBP, required for mitoribosome formation and protein synthesis, and STOML2, which organizes cardiolipin-enriched microdomains and the assembly of respiratory supercomplexes. Factoring in fast/slow fiber type, COX (-) slow fibers show a compensatory upregulation of beta-oxidation, the AAA(+) protease AFG3L1, and the OPA1-dependent cristae remodeling program. These findings reveal compensatory mechanisms in muscle fibers struggling with energy shortage and metabolic stress
Non-equilibrium spatial distribution of Rashba spin torque in ferromagnetic metal layer
We study the spatial distribution of spin torque induced by a strong Rashba
spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) in a ferromagnetic (FM) metal layer, using the
Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function method. In the presence of the s-d
interaction between the non-equilibrium conduction electrons and the local
magnetic moments, the RSOC effect induces a torque on the moments, which we
term as the Rashba spin torque.
A correlation between the Rashba spin torque and the spatial spin current is
presented in this work, clearly mapping the spatial distribution of Rashba Spin
torque in a nano-sized ferromagnetic device. When local magnetism is turned on,
the out-of-plane (Sz) Spin Hall effect (SHE) is disrupted, but rather
unexpectedly an in-plane (Sy) SHE is detected. We also study the effect of
Rashba strength (\alpha_R) and splitting exchange (\Delta) on the
non-equilibrium Rashba spin torque averaged over the device. Rashba spin torque
allows an efficient transfer of spin momentum such that a typical switching
field of 20 mT can be attained with a low current density of less than 10^6
