    Verified and potential pathogens of predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

    Several species of phytoseiid mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae), including species of the genera Amblyseius, Galendromus, Metaseiulus, Neoseiulus, Phytoseiulus and Typhlodromus, are currently reared for biological control of various crop pests and/or as model organisms for the study of predator¿prey interactions. Pathogen-free phytoseiid mites are important to obtain high efficacy in biological pest control and to get reliable data in mite research, as pathogens may affect the performance of their host or alter their reproduction and behaviour. Potential and verified pathogens have been reported for phytoseiid mites during the past 25 years. The present review provides an overview, including potential pathogens with unknown host effects (17 reports), endosymbiotic Wolbachia (seven reports), other bacteria (including Cardinium and Spiroplasma) (four reports), cases of unidentified diseases (three reports) and cases of verified pathogens (six reports). From the latter group four reports refer to Microsporidia, one to a fungus and one to a bacterium. Only five entities have been studied in detail, including Wolbachia infecting seven predatory mite species, other endosymbiotic bacteria infecting Metaseiulus (Galendromus, Typhlodromus) occidentalis (Nesbitt), the bacterium Acaricomes phytoseiuli infecting Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, the microsporidium Microsporidium phytoseiuli infecting P. persimilis and the microsporidium Oligosproridium occidentalis infecting M. occidentalis. In four cases (Wolbachia, A. phytoseiuli, M. phytoseiuli and O. occidentalis) an infection may be connected with fitness costs of the host. Moreover, infection is not always readily visible as no obvious gross symptoms are present. Monitoring of these entities on a routine and continuous basis should therefore get more attention, especially in commercial mass-production. Special attention should be paid to field-collected mites before introduction into the laboratory or mass rearing, and to mites that are exchanged among rearing facilities. However, at present general pathogen monitoring is not yet practical as effects of many entities are unknown. More research effort is needed concerning verified and potential pathogens of commercially reared arthropods and those used as model organisms in research

    Discriminant Analysis of Main Prognostic Factors Associated with Hemodynamically Significant PDA: Apgar Score, Silverman–Anderson Score, and NT-Pro-BNP Level

    Hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) in premature newborns is associated with a risk of PDA-related morbidities. Classification into risk groups may have a clinical utility in cases of suspected hsPDA to decrease the need for echocardiograms and unnecessary treatment. This prospective observational study included 99 premature newborns with extremely low body weight, who had an echocardiogram performed within the first three days of life. Discriminant analysis was utilized to find the best combination of prognostic factors for evaluation of hsPDA. We used binary logistic regression analysis to predict the relationship between parameters and hsPDA. The cohort’s mean and standard deviation gestational age was 27.6 ± 2.55 weeks, the mean birth weight was 1015 ± 274 g. Forty-six (46.4%) infants had a PDA with a mean diameter of 2.78 mm. Median NT-pro-BNP levels were 17,600 pg/mL for infants with a PDA and 2773 pg/mL in the non-hsPDA group. The combination of prognostic factors of hsPDA in newborns of extremely low body weight on the third day of life was determined: NT-pro-BNP, Apgar score, Silverman–Anderson score (Se = 82%, Sp = 88%). A cut-off value of NT-pro-BNP of more than 8500 pg/mL can predict hsPDA (Se = 84%, Sp = 86%)

    Quasi-collinear and partially degenerate four-wave mixing: An alternative explanation of the phase-conjugation property of backward stimulated scattering

    A quasi-collinear and partially degenerate four-wave mixing model is proposed to explain the optical phase-conjugation property of various types of stimulated backscattering. According to this model, after passing through a phase-disturbed medium or an aberration plate, the input pump beam can be resolved into two portions: a stronger undisturbed regular portion and a weaker phase-disturbed irregular portion. These two portions interfere with each other and create a volume holographic grating in the pumped region of the scattering medium. Only the stronger undisturbed portion of the pump field can excite an initial backward stimulated scattering beam with a regular wavefront. When the latter (as a reading beam) passes through the induced holographic grating, a diffracted wave will be created and then amplified together with the reading beam. A rigorous mathematical analysis shows that under certain conditions the combination of these two portions (the reading wave and the diffracted wave) of the backward stimulated scattering can be an approximate phase-conjugate field of the input pump field.     Communication Power Struggles on Social Media: A Case Study of the 2011-12 Russian Protests

    In 2011-2012 Russia experienced a wave of mass protests surrounding the Duma and presidential elections. The protests, however, faded shortly after the second election. We study the Russian political discourse on Twitter during this period and the main actors involved: the pro-government camp, the opposition and the general public. We analyse around 700.000 Twitter messages and investigate the social networks of the most active Twitter users. Our analysis shows that pro-government users employed a variety of communication strategies to shift the political discourse and marginalise oppositional voices on Twitter. This demonstrates how authorities can disempower regime critics and successfully manipulate public opinion on social media
