    High conversion efficiency mass-limited Sn-based laser plasma source for extreme ultraviolet lithography

    Extreme ultraviolet lithography requires a high-efficiency light source at 13 nm that is free from debris. Our mass-limited Sn-based laser plasma source shows 1.2% conversion efficiency. Emission spectra from the source were obtained to observe the effects of Sri concentration and effects of laser intensity. Debris measurements were analyzed, and an enhanced repeller field configuration shows marked improvement in mitigating debris. (C) 2004 American Vacuum Society

    Validation of the Japanese version of the Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

    Background, Dementia in people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) is difficult to detect because of preexisting cognitive deficits. An effective screening method is required. The Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (DSQIID) was developed as an observer rating tool to screen dementia in people with ID. The aim of this study was to verify the screening accuracy of the DSQIID for Japanese people with ID. Methods Four‐hundred ninety‐three subjects with ID participated in this study. Caregivers who had observed the participants for more than 2 years scored the Japanese version of the DSQIID (DSQIID‐J) of the participants. Three doctors examined participants directly and diagnosed dementia using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria. To identify the key screening items that predict dementia, the specificities of a single and pairs of items with 100% sensitivity were evaluated relative to the dementia diagnosis. Results Of 493 participants, 34 were people with Down syndrome (DS), and 459 were people without DS. Seventeen participants were diagnosed with dementia. The suitable cut‐off score of the DSQIID‐J was 10/11 (sensitivity 100% and specificity 96.8%) for screening dementia. The inter‐rater reliability, test–retest reliability and internal consistency of the DSQIID‐J were excellent. Regarding key items, there was no single item with 100% sensitivity, and the best two‐item combination was the pair of ‘Cannot dress without help’ and ‘Walks slower’ (sensitivity 100% and specificity 93.5%). Conclusions We identified several important question items of the DSQIID‐J related to the diagnosis of dementia in people with ID. The DSQIID‐J is a useful screening tool for dementia in adults with ID

    Ion emission measurements and mirror erosion studies for extreme ultraviolet lithography

    Mirror erosion by high energy ion emission from extreme UV light sources is one of the main factors contributing to EUVL collector mirror reflectivity degradation. We are measuring ion energy distributions at the mirror distance from the plasma utilizing three different ion diagnostics for the case of tin-doped microscopic droplet laser plasmas. Typical ion energy distributions measured by an electrostatic spectrorneter are described. From the ion energy distributions, an estimate of mirror erosion is obtained. The effectiveness of electrostatic field mitigation is evaluated for the EUVL source requirement. (c) 2005 American Vacuum Society

    Inactivation of the transforming growth factor β type II receptor in human small cell lung cancer cell lines

    Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) exerts a growth inhibitory effect on many cell types through binding to two types of receptors, the type I and II receptors. Resistance to TGF-β due to lack of type II receptor (RII) has been described in some cancer types including small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The purpose of this study was to examine the cause of absent RII expression in SCLC cell lines. Northern blot analysis showed that RII RNA expression was very weak in 16 of 21 cell lines. To investigate if the absence of RII transcript was due to mutations, we screened the poly-A tract for mutations, but no mutations were detected. Additional screening for mutations of the RII gene revealed a GG to TT base substitution in one cell line, which did not express RII. This mutation generates a stop codon resulting in predicted synthesis of a truncated RII of 219 amino acids. The nature of the mutation, which has not previously been observed in RII, has been linked to exposure to benzo[a]-pyrene, a component of cigarette smoke. Since RII has been mapped to chromosome 3p22 and nearby loci are often hypermethylated in SCLC, it was examined whether the lack of RII expression was due to hypermethylation. Southern blot analysis of the RII promoter did not show altered methylation patterns. The restriction endonuclease pattern of the RII gene was altered in two SCLC cell lines when digested with Sma 1. However, treatment with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine did not induce expression of RII mRNA. Our results indicate that in SCLC lack of RII mRNA is not commonly due to mutations and inactivation of RII transcription was not due to hypermethylation of the RII promoter or gene. Thus, these data show that in most cases of the SCLC cell lines, the RII gene and promoter is intact in spite of absent RII expression. However, the nature of the mutation found could suggest that it was caused by cigarette smoking. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    SnoN expression is differently regulated in microsatellite unstable compared with microsatellite stable colorectal cancers

    BACKGROUND: SnoN is an important regulator of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signalling pathway and has been shown to exhibit both tumour promotion and suppression activity. METHODS: To further explore the role of this complex molecule in colorectal tumorigenesis, we examined 52 paired normal and tumour colorectal specimens stratified by level of microsatellite instability; 18 with high-level microsatellite instability (MSI-H) and 34 microsatellite stable (MSS). SnoN transcript expression was quantitated by real-time PCR and analysed with respect to clinical indicators of prognosis. RESULTS: Within the MSI-H subgroup, SnoN was commonly either up-regulated (6/18, 33%) or down-regulated (7/18, 39%). A significantly different distribution of SnoN expression was observed in MSS cancers compared with MSI-H (P ≤ 0.001). Whilst 17/34 (50%) of MSS tumours demonstrated up-regulation, none showed down-regulated expression. Within the MSI-H subgroup, up-regulation was significantly correlated with lack of repeat tract mutation in the TGFβRII gene (P ≤ 0.025), suggesting that SnoN is more frequently up-regulated in the presence of functional TGFβ signalling. CONCLUSION: Together these data support the notion that SnoN has both oncogenic and tumour suppressive properties depending on other genetic changes within the tumour, and that the MSI-H pathway of colorectal tumorigenesis presents an excellent model for the study of these opposing functions

    Negative assimilation:how immigrants experience economic mobility in Japan

    This paper examines the economic mobility of foreign migrants in Japan. In a country that is largely regarded as homogeneous and closed to outsiders, how and to what extent do immigrants achieve economic success? A survey conducted by the authors revealed that the conventional assimilationist perspective does not fully explain immigrants’ economic success in Japan. Migrants from the West experience what Chiswick and Miller (2011) refer to as “negative assimilation.” That is, their earnings decline over time in Japan. While negative assimilation was not clearly observed among immigrants from neighboring Asian countries, wages among them did not increase with the length of their stay in Japan. For both groups, the skills they brought from abroad were found to be largely accountable for their economic success, while locally specific human capital, such as education acquired in the host society, did not contribute to their earnings

    The mechanisms by which polyamines accelerate tumor spread

    Increased polyamine concentrations in the blood and urine of cancer patients reflect the enhanced levels of polyamine synthesis in cancer tissues arising from increased activity of enzymes responsible for polyamine synthesis. In addition to their de novo polyamine synthesis, cells can take up polyamines from extracellular sources, such as cancer tissues, food, and intestinal microbiota. Because polyamines are indispensable for cell growth, increased polyamine availability enhances cell growth. However, the malignant potential of cancer is determined by its capability to invade to surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant organs. The mechanisms by which increased polyamine levels enhance the malignant potential of cancer cells and decrease anti-tumor immunity are reviewed. Cancer cells with a greater capability to synthesize polyamines are associated with increased production of proteinases, such as serine proteinase, matrix metalloproteinases, cathepsins, and plasminogen activator, which can degrade surrounding tissues. Although cancer tissues produce vascular growth factors, their deregulated growth induces hypoxia, which in turn enhances polyamine uptake by cancer cells to further augment cell migration and suppress CD44 expression. Increased polyamine uptake by immune cells also results in reduced cytokine production needed for anti-tumor activities and decreases expression of adhesion molecules involved in anti-tumor immunity, such as CD11a and CD56. Immune cells in an environment with increased polyamine levels lose anti-tumor immune functions, such as lymphokine activated killer activities. Recent investigations revealed that increased polyamine availability enhances the capability of cancer cells to invade and metastasize to new tissues while diminishing immune cells' anti-tumor immune functions

    Integrating chromosomal aberrations and gene expression profiles to dissect rectal tumorigenesis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Accurate staging of rectal tumors is essential for making the correct treatment choice. In a previous study, we found that loss of 17p, 18q and gain of 8q, 13q and 20q could distinguish adenoma from carcinoma tissue and that gain of 1q was related to lymph node metastasis. In order to find markers for tumor staging, we searched for candidate genes on these specific chromosomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We performed gene expression microarray analysis on 79 rectal tumors and integrated these data with genomic data from the same sample series. We performed supervised analysis to find candidate genes on affected chromosomes and validated the results with qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Integration of gene expression and chromosomal instability data revealed similarity between these two data types. Supervised analysis identified up-regulation of <it>EFNA1 </it>in cases with 1q gain, and <it>EFNA1 </it>expression was correlated with the expression of a target gene (<it>VEGF</it>). The <it>BOP1 </it>gene, involved in ribosome biogenesis and related to chromosomal instability, was over-expressed in cases with 8q gain. <it>SMAD2 </it>was the most down-regulated gene on 18q, and on 20q, <it>STMN3 </it>and <it>TGIF2 </it>were highly up-regulated. Immunohistochemistry for SMAD4 correlated with <it>SMAD2 </it>gene expression and 18q loss.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>On basis of integrative analysis this study identified one well known CRC gene (<it>SMAD2</it>) and several other genes (<it>EFNA1, BOP1, TGIF2 </it>and <it>STMN3</it>) that possibly could be used for rectal cancer characterization.</p
