    Fifteenth Century Problems for the Twenty-First Century Gift: Human Tissue Transactions in Ethnically Diverse Societies

    The language of the ‘gift’ continues to be drawn upon in attempts to encourage altruistic organ and tissue donation. My aim here is to consider the anxieties that come into focus when this rhetoric is deployed in the context of ethnic minorities and, moreover, their donation practices are situated within universalistic discourses of charity and the gift. The article considers ideas of the body, debt, obligation, relationality, and solidarity, and how these fit within the overarching projects of society, modernity, and democracy when the market figures as an ever more prominent feature of such projects. Drawing on a variety of examples, the piece reflects on the movement of tissue across ethnically and culturally marked corporeal boundaries and highlights the tensions that arise from refusal as well as acceptance of such transactions

    The moral economy of selfhood and caring: negotiating boundaries of personal care as an embodied moral practice

    This paper engages with the dichotomous notions of caring underpinning social policy and practice in Britain, that splits up the 'carer' and 'cared for' into autonomous, unitary subjects, by locating personal care as an embodied, moral practice within a theoretical framework of relational ontology. Drawing on empirical accounts and narratives related to personal care within the context of advanced cancer, we argue that personal care involves negotiation of boundaries between notions of relatedness and legitimate dependence on one hand, and independence and integrity of the embodied self on the other; and we analyse how these boundaries are informed by particular cultural or religious scripts on gender, relatedness, conjugality and filial obligations. The paper draws on data and analysis based on observations and in-depth interviews with White and South Asian participants between 19 and 89 years of age receiving treatment for cancer, and family members closely involved in their personal care. In using a comparative method for analysis and understanding caring as an embodied moral practice and site of subjectivity across cultural/religious groups, it is suggested that ethnicity is not necessarily the only useful analytical concept to explore the illness and caring experiences of research participants from minority ethnic backgrounds

    Mg-SINE: a short interspersed nuclear element from the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe grisea.

    A short interspersed nuclear element, Mg-SINE, was isolated and characterized from the genome of the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe grisea. Mg-SINE was isolated as an insertion element within Pot2, an inverted-repeat transposon from M. grisea and shows typical features of a mammalian SINE. Mg-SINE is present as a 0.47-kb interspersed sequence at approximately 100 copies per haploid genome in both rice and non-rice isolates of M. grisea, indicating a common evolutionary origin. Secondary structure analysis of Mg-SINE revealed a tRNA-related region at the 5' end which folds into a cloverleaf structure. Genomic fusions resulting in chimeric Mg-SINEs (Ch-SINEs) composed of a sequence homologous to Mg-SINE at the 3' end and an unrelated sequence at its 5' end were also isolated, indicating that this and other DNA rearrangements mediated by these elements may have a major effect on the genomic architecture of this fungus

    Molecular mapping of a novel blast resistance gene Pi38 in rice using SSLP and AFLP markers

    Blast, caused by Magnaporthe grisea, is the most devastating disease of rice worldwide. In this study, the main objective was to identify and map a new gene for blast resistance, in an indica rice cultivar 'Tadukan' against blast fungal isolate B157, using molecular tools. F<SUB>2</SUB> segregating population was derived from 'CO39' (susceptible) and 'Tadukan' (resistant), and molecular mapping of the blast resistance gene was carried out using simple sequence length polymorphism (SSLP) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) methods. Two SSLP markers, RM206 and RM21 and three AFLP markers (AF1: E-aca/M-ctt; AF2: E-aca/M-cat and AF3: E-acc/M-cac2) were identified to be linked to the resistance gene. The co-segregation analysis using SSLP markers implied that the blast resistance gene designated Pi38 resides on rice chromosome 11

    Pot2, an inverted repeat transposon from the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea

    We report the cloning and characterisation of Pot2, a putative transposable element from Magnaporthe grisea. The element is 1857 by in size, has 43-bp perfect terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) and 16-bp direct repeats within the TIRs. A large open reading frame, potentially coding for a transposase-like protein, was identified. This putative protein coding region showed extensive identity to that of Fott, a transposable element from another phytopathogenic fungus, Fusarium oxysporum. Pot2, like the transposable elements Tc1 and Mariner of Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila, respectively, duplicates the dinucleotide TA at the target insertion site. Sequence analysis of DNA flanking 12 Pot2 elements revealed similarity to the consensus insertion sequence of Tct. Pot2 is present at a copy number of approximately 100 per haploid genome and represents one of the major repetitive DNAs shared by both rice and non-rice pathogens of M. grisea
