Tectonic Control on Sedimentary Dynamics in Intraplate Oceanic Settings: A Geomorphological Image of the Eastern Canary Basin and Insights on its Middle-Upper Miocene to Quaternary Volcano-Tectonic-Sedimentary Evolution
This paper integrates sedimentary, tectonic and volcanic geological processes inside a model of volcano-tectonic activity in oceanic intraplate domains related to rifted continental margins. The study case, the eastern Canary Basin (NE Atlantic), is one of the few places in the world where giant MDTs and Quaternary volcanic and hydrothermal edifices take place in intraplate domains. In this paper, we analyse how two structural systems (WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW) matching with the oceanic fabric control the location of volcanic systems, seafloor tectonic reliefs and subsequently the distribution of main sedimentary systems. Linear turbidite channels, debris flow lobes and the lateral continuity of structural and volcanic reliefs follow a WNW-ESE trend matching the tracks of the oceanic fracture zones. Furthermore, escarpments, anticline axes and volcanic ridges follow a NNE-SSW trend matching normal faults delimiting blocks of oceanic basement. The morpho-structural analysis of all the above geomorphological features shows evidence of a volcanic and tectonic activity from the middle–upper
Miocene to the Lower–Middle Pleistocene spread over the whole of the eastern Canary Basin that reached the western Canary Islands. This reactivation changes the paradigm in the seamount province of Canary Islands reported inactive since Cretaceous. A tecto-sedimentary model is proposed for this period of time that can be applied in other intraplate domains of the world. A tectonic uplift in the study area with a thermal anomaly triggered volcanic and hydrothermal activity and the subsequent flank collapse and emplacement of mass transport deposits on the Western Canary Slope. Furthermore, this uplift reactivated the normal basement faults, both trending WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW, generating folds and faults that control the location of turbidite channels, escarpments, mass transport deposits and volcanic edifices.
We present a morphometric analysis of 41 mounded edifices located on the seafloor to the
west of Canary Islands, using a 150 m resolution DEM and very high-resolution seismic profiles. In
order to carry out morphometric computation a set of variables (slope, size and shape) were
calculated using ArcGIS Analyst tools. A mapping cluster has been generated using Grouping Analyst
ArcGIS Statistics toolset where seven differents morphometric groups have been distinguished. Four
main types of edifice shapes have been identified within the seven morphometric groups. The first
type is a single giant dome elevation that can be considered as an outlier mound. The second type is
the most frequent and can be considered as the standard type mound on the Canary continental
slope due to its intermediate morphology. They show extrusive seismic characteristics in seismic
profiles. The third type is morphologically derived from type 2, representing steeper and higher
mounds related with extrusive processes whereas the fourth type represents smoother and flatter
mounds related to faulting. This study shows that an elaborated geomorphometry resolves between
types of extrusive edifices from those under tectonic conditionsVersión del edito
Mud volcanism represents an important migration pathway for methane and other gases
from deeper reservoirs to the surface; however most submarine sources remain poor quantified.
During SUBVENT2 cruise, water column over several mud volcanoes were surveyed for gas seepage
characterization. Water samples of ROV Niskin and Rosette-CTD Niskin bottles were recovered above
the Bonjardim, El Cid, Las Negras, Mercator, Algacel, Mvseis, Madrid and Yuma mud volcanoes, and
at three newly discovered, mud volcano like structures, to quantify overall gases release fluxes from
seabed. CO2 and CH4 concentrations were measured by potentiometric titration and using a gas
chromatograph, respectively, in order to understand the relationship between physicochemical and
geological processes. Gases concentrations decreased from shallower to deeper mud volcanoes.
Values varied widely within 50 to 200 nM for CH4 and between 400 to 1500 μatm for fCO2.
Greenhouse gases variations were large influenced by water column depth, temperature, salinity
and possibly by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Our observations suggest that the emission
of methane and carbon dioxide from the mud volcanoes structures studied here may be relevant at
the present as a part of the carbon global cycle.
Very high resolution parametric echosounder (TOPAS) data interpretation obtained during CADHYS0713, INDEMARES/CHICA1011 and ARSA0313 cruises along the middle, external shelf and upper slope of the eastern Gulf of Cadiz between 50 and 400 m depth has allowed us the identification of several active tectonic structures acting since the Holocene. To date this activiy, it have been identified along the study area three postglacial discontinuities, Postglacial Trangressive Surface (TS) of 18 ky BP; the maximum flooding surface (MFS) of 6.5 ky; and the 3.5 ky Mid highstand deposits surface (MHS). Active normal and reverse faults have been identified whose recent activity is closely linked to the uplift episodes of salt diapirs structures from onshore to distal areas of the continental margin.
Extrusive edifices and structural reliefs, catalogued as mounds and located on the seafloor
to the west of Canary Islands were analyzed by acoustic data obtained with multibeam and
parametric echosounders during several oceanographic expeditions. They were carried out at deep
waters, from 4800 to 5200 m, and they have allowed characterizing 41 newly discovered submarine
structures which occur either as isolated edifices or clustered mounds. These features have circular
to elongated shapes with diameters of 2-24 km and relief heights of 10 to 250 m, showing different
flank slopes of 2-50°. They generally display mounded forms and show morphological elements as
ridges, near-circular rock outcrops, depressions and fault scarps together with mass flow and slide
deposits located at the vicinity of the edifices. Two types of extrusive features are evidenced by the
morphological and seismic data analyses, the first one probably corresponds to high velocity
extrusions that reach the seafloor surface and the second one is probably formed by the
combination of faulted structures and low velocity extrusions that produce singular domes in the
shallower sedimentary records. Based on both analyses, extrusive phenomena represent the
dominant mechanism for mound field evolution in the Canary lower slope region.Versión del edito
Morphosedimentary characterization of the Capbreton submarine canyon system, Bay of Biscay (Cantabrian Sea)
Various studies have been carried out to the declaration of new marine protected areas for their importance for habitats, according to the Natura 2000 Network. One of these sites is a sector of the Capbreton Submarine Canyon System, located in front of the Basque Country coast, in the Bay of Biscay (North Atlantic). During the Intemares_CapBreton 0619 and 0620 surveys; bathymetric, backscatter, high-resolution parametric data and samples of sediments, rocks and benthic communities from the seabed were acquired. The study was completed by recording video transects with the underwater vehicle ROTV Politolana from the IEO. The processing and analysis of the geophysical information has allowed obtaining a detailed bathymetry grid of 10 × 10 m, from which the first morphosedimentary characterization of the system of tributary canyons to the E-W trending main canyon and its interfluves has been made. One of the main features of this canyon system is the presence of a large pockmark field on adjacent platforms between canyons, located between 500 and 1000 m water depth. Within this field, pockmarks are shown as circular to elliptical depressions, most likely related to gas rich-fluid emissions to the subsurface.
The northeastern sector of the Gulf of Cadiz continental margin has been deeply studied the
last two decades. The seafloor is characterized by the Gulf of Cadiz Contourite Depositional System,
strong diapirism and seepage related to the mobility of the frontal units of the Gibraltar Arc. Since
2010 high resolution bathymetric data and high and very high resolution seismic reflection and
parametric echosounder profiles have improved the resolution of the previous collected data set.
These data allow to analyze the middle continental slope morphology and its shallow structure with
the aim to know the active tectonic processes on the seafloor. Two types of structures have been
considered: (a) anticline domes and (b) normal faults which produce linear scarps and tectonic
depressions. The shallow tectonics in this region is mainly related to the high mobility of geological
formations in the subsoil and their ductile mechanical behaviour.Versión del edito
Seafloor geomorphology of the Passage of Lanzarote (West Africa Margin): Influences of the oceanographic processes
The seafloor morphology of the Passage of Lanzarote has been analysed with the aim to know
the active processes on the bottom surface related to the oceanographic context. Multibeam bathymetric
data and high and very high resolution seismic profiles obtained in the SUBVENT2 cruise have been
used. Five main morphological groups have been analysed: (a) Volcanic or diapiric submarine hills; (b)
Tectonic features on the continental slope (linear scarps and a rhombohedral depression) related to
normal faults; (c) Submarine venting at top of diapirs initially triggered circular depressions; (d)
Sedimentary instabilities (gullies, canyons, mass transport deposits) are present specially on the
Fuerteventura-Lanzarote ridge; and (e) Contouritic bottom features both erosive (central valley,
marginal valleys) and depositional (plastered drifts) are on the central part of the passage, and are
generated by the interaction of MW and the interface MW-AAIW with seafloor.Versión del edito
Characterization of active normal faults in the Gulf of Cádiz continental shelf (SW Iberian Peninsula)
New evidences of recent tectonic activity have been found at the outer and middle continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz, from the Guadalquivir river mouth to the Bay of Cádiz. The characterization of Quaternary active faults is based on the interpretation of high and very high resolution seismic reflection profiles, where faults are affecting the Transgressive System Tract (TST) and Highstand System Tract (HST). Normal faults following E-W to NW-SE trends have been identified and mapped, and are related to WNW-ESE deep listric faults and diapiric structures. Neotectonic activity, mainly from Upper Pleistocene to present-day (18ka), has been quantified in this sector on the basis of the relative estimated slip rate and the relative dating of these tectonic structures.Versión del edito
