Borel singularities at small x
D.I.S. at small Bjorken is considered within the dipole cascade
formalism. The running coupling in impact parameter space is introduced in
order to parametrize effects that arise from emission of large size dipoles.
This results in a new evolution equation for the dipole cascade. Strong
coupling effects are analyzed after transforming the evolution equation in
Borel () space. The Borel singularities of the solution are discussed first
for the universal part of the dipole cascade and then for the specific process
of D.I.S. at small . In the latter case the leading infrared renormalon is
at indicating the presence of power corrections for the

Design and application of gas-gap heat switches
Gas-gap heat switches can serve as an effective means of thermally disconnecting a standby cryocooler when the primary (operating) cooler is connected and vice versa. The final phase of the development and test of a cryogenic heat switch designed for loads ranging from 2 watts at 8 K, to 100 watts at 80 K are described. Achieved heat-switch on/off conductance ratio ranged from 11,000 at 8 K to 2200 at 80 K. A particularly challenging element of heat-switch design is achieving satisfactory operation when large temperatures differentials exist across the switch. A special series of tests and analyses was conducted and used in this Phase-2 activity to evaluate the developed switches for temperature differentials ranging up to 200 K. Problems encountered at the maximum levels are described and analyzed, and means of avoiding the problems in the future are presented. A comprehensive summary of the overall heat-switch design methodology is also presented with special emphasis on lessons learned over the course of the 4-year development effort
Experimental conversion of colony social organization by manipulation of worker genotype composition in fire ants (Solenopsis invicta)
Previous studies have shown that colony social organization in Solenopsis invicta is under strong genetic control. Colonies containing some proportion of workers with the Bb or bb genotypes at the gene Gp-9 display polygyne social organization (multiple reproductive queens per colony), whereas colonies with only BB workers express monogyne organization (single reproductive queen per colony). The hypothesis that the presence of workers bearing the b allele confers the polygyne social phenotype on a colony leads to the prediction that social organization can be manipulated by experimentally altering frequencies of adult workers bearing this allele. We did this by replacing queens in colonies of each social form with single queens of the alternate form, which differ in Gp-9 genotype. As worker Gp-9 genotype compositions changed, experimental colonies switched to the alternate social organization. These switches occurred when frequencies of workers with the b allele passed an identifiable threshold, such that colonies with fewer than 5% such workers behaved like monogyne colonies and those with more than 10% behaved like polygyne colonies. Our data thus confirm the prediction that colony social organization in this ant can be altered by manipulating adult worker genotype compositions, and thereby support the hypothesis that the expression of polygyny requires the presence of adult workers bearing the b allele at Gp-9

Improving dialysis adherence for high risk patients using automated messaging: Proof of concept
AbstractComorbidities and socioeconomic barriers often limit patient adherence and self-management with hemodialysis. Missed sessions, often associated with communication barriers, can result in emergency dialysis and avoidable hospitalizations. This proof of concept study explored using a novel digital-messaging platform, EpxDialysis, to improve patient-to-dialysis center communication via widely available text messaging and telephone technology. A randomized controlled trial was conducted through Washington University-affiliated hemodialysis centers involving ESRD patients with poor attendance, defined as missing 2–6 sessions over the preceding 12 weeks. A cross-over study design evaluated appointment adherence between intervention and control groups. Comparing nonadherence rates eight weeks prior to enrollment, median appointment adherence after using the system increased by 75%, and median number of unintended hospitalization days fell by 31%. A conservative cost-benefit analysis of EpxDialysis demonstrates a 1:36 savings ratio from appointment adherence. EpxDialysis is a low-risk, cost-effective, intervention for increasing hemodialysis adherence in high-risk patients, especially at centers caring for vulnerable and low-income patients.</jats:p
Thermal gravity, black holes and cosmological entropy
Taking seriously the interpretation of black hole entropy as the logarithm of
the number of microstates, we argue that thermal gravitons may undergo a phase
transition to a kind of black hole condensate. The phase transition proceeds
via nucleation of black holes at a rate governed by a saddlepoint configuration
whose free energy is of order the inverse temperature in Planck units. Whether
the universe remains in a low entropy state as opposed to the high entropy
black hole condensate depends sensitively on its thermal history. Our results
may clarify an old observation of Penrose regarding the very low entropy state

X-ray Reflection from Inhomogeneous Accretion Disks: II. Emission Line Variability and Implications for Reverberation Mapping
One of the principal scientific objectives of the upcoming Constellation-X
mission is to attempt to map the inner regions of accretion disks around black
holes in Seyfert galaxies by reverberation mapping of the Fe K fluorescence
line. This area of the disk is likely radiation pressure dominated and subject
to various dynamical instabilities. Here, we show that density inhomogeneities
in the disk atmosphere resulting from the photon bubble instability (PBI) can
cause rapid changes in the X-ray reflection features, even when the
illuminating flux is constant. Using a simulation of the development of the
PBI, we find that, for the disk parameters chosen, the Fe K and O VIII Ly\alpha
lines vary on timescales as short as a few hundredths of an orbital time. In
response to the changes in accretion disk structure, the Fe K equivalent width
(EW) shows variations as large as ~100 eV. The magnitude and direction
(positive or negative) of the changes depends on the ionization state of the
atmosphere. The largest changes are found when the disk is moderately ionized.
The O VIII EW varies by tens of eV, as well as exhibiting plenty of rapid,
low-amplitude changes. This effect provides a natural explanation for some
observed instances of short timescale Fe K variability which was uncorrelated
with the continuum (e.g., Mrk 841). New predictions for Fe K reverberation
mapping should be made which include the effects of this accretion disk driven
line variability and a variable ionization state. Reflection spectra averaged
over the evolution of the instability are well fit by constant density models

The Character of Z-pole Data Constraints on Standard Model Parameters
Despite the impressive precision of the Z-pole measurements made at LEP and
SLC, the allowed region for the principle Standard Model parameters responsible
for radiative corrections (the mass of the Higgs, the mass of the top and
alpha(Mz)) is still large enough to encompass significant non-linearities. The
nature of the experimental constraints therefore depends in an interesting way
on the "accidental" relationships among the various measurements. In
particular, the fact that the Z-pole measurements favor values of the Higgs
mass excluded by direct searches leads us to examine the effects of external
Higgsstrahlung, a process ignored by the usual precision electroweak
