A Conversation with Tomas Avila Laurel

In February 2011 Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel (b. 1966) declared a hunger strike in order to bring attention to the political situation in Equatorial Guinea, where the longstanding authoritarian regime works in tandem with the compliance of foreign powers. Concerned for the security of the author, national and international observers recommended that he leave the country. Today, Ávila Laurel lives in Spain, where he has become, in his own words, a “migrant due to political causes.” In Spain, Ávila Laurel continues his writing, alongside a pacific fight for democracy. Aside from his ethical commitment to justice and solidarity with the people of his country and all marginalized peoples, Ávila Laurel has created a literary aesthetic that is informed by this multilingual, multicultural environment. Thus, his literary style is marked by images that synthesize his society, reflect on world history, and connect Equatorial Guinea to other nations, across time and geography

Receptions of the Classics in the African Diaspora of the Hispanophone and Lusophone Worlds

Atlantis Otherwise expands the study of the African diaspora by focusing on postcolonial literary expressions from Latin America and Africa. The book studies the presence of classical references in texts written by writers (black and non-black) who are committed to the articulation of the fragmented history of the African experience from the Middle Passage to the present outside of Euro-centric views. Consequently, this book addresses the silencing of the African Diaspora within the official discourses of Latin America and Hispanic Africa, as well as the limitations that linguistic and geographic boundaries have imposed upon scholarship. The contributors address questions related to the categories of race and cultural identity by analyzing a diverse body of Afro-Latin American and Afro-Hispanic receptions of classical literature and its imaginaries. Literary texts in Spanish and Portuguese written in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Equatorial Guinea provide the opportunity for a transnational and trans-linguistic examination of the use of classical tropes and themes in twentieth-century drama, fiction, folklore studies, and narrative.https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/language_books/1002/thumbnail.jp

George Simmel, Sociabilidad e Interacción. Aportes a la ciencia de la comunicación

Dentro de la propuesta del Grupo hacia una Comunicología Posible, la interacción es considerada como la dimensión comunicológica que recupera en mayor medida el sentido originario del término comunicación. Por otra parte, la Sociología Fenomenológica -con Schütz, Berger y Luckmann al frente- y la Psicología Social -con las propuestas del interaccionismo simbólico, la psicología cognitiva y las representaciones sociales de Moscovici- constituyen dos de las fuentes científicas históricas con menor presencia en el campo académico de la comunicación. Aunque George Simmel no puede ser ubicado estrictamente dentro de estas fuentes de conocimiento, consideramos que su obra constituye una propuesta holística para comprender a la interacción como fundamento de las relaciones sociales. En este tenor, el presente artículo tiene como propósito revisar la obra de Simmel desde este enfoque específico: la Comunicología. No se trata sólo de revisar qué dijo Simmel acerca de la interacción, sino que yendo más allá, trataremos de ver qué de lo que dijo el autor sobre esta dimensión de la comunicología puede ayudar a complejizar la comprensión del término interacción y, por ende, comunicación. El artículo está dividido en tres partes. En primer lugar se exponen algunas generalidades sobre el concepto de interacción y su relación con la comunicación, desde un enfoque que retoma fundamentalmente las aportaciones de la Sociología Fenomenológica y la Psicología Social. A continuación se revisa con detenimiento la lectura simmeliana en torno a la interacción. Y concluimos con un apunte reflexivo que pretende dar cuenta del potencial heurístico de este autor, poco reconocido en el campo de la comunicación
