    Fail-safe system for activity cooled supersonic and hypersonic aircraft

    A fail-safe-system concept was studied as an alternative to a redundant active cooling system for supersonic and hypersonic aircraft which use the heat sink of liquid-hydrogen fuel for cooling the aircraft structure. This concept consists of an abort maneuver by the aircraft and a passive thermal protection system (TPS) for the aircraft skin. The abort manuever provides a low-heat-load descent from normal cruise speed to a lower speed at which cooling is unnecessary, and the passive TPS allows the aircraft skin to absorb the abort heat load without exceeding critical skin temperature. On the basis of results obtained, it appears that this fail-safe-system concept warrants further consideration, inasmuch as a fail-safe system could possibly replace a redundant active cooling system with no increase in weight and would offer other potential advantages

    Aerodynamic characteristics at Mach 6 of a hypersonic research airplane concept having a 70 deg swept delta wing

    The hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of an air-launched, delta-wing research aircraft concept were investigated at Mach 6. The effect of various components such as nose shape, wing camber, wing location, center vertical tail, wing tip fins, forward delta wing, engine nacelle, and speed brakes was also studied. Tests were conducted with a 0.021 scale model at a Reynolds number, based on model length, of 10.5 million and over an angel of attack range from -4 deg to 20 deg. Results show that most configurations with a center vertical tail have static longitudinal stability at trim, static directional stability at angles of attack up to 12 deg, and static lateral stability throughout the angle of attack range. Configurations with wing tip fins generally have static longitudinal stability at trim, have lateral stability at angles of attack above 8 deg, and are directionally unstable over the angle of attack range

    Perkembangan teknologi yang cukup pesat saat ini menyajikan beragam pilihan hiburan bagi pelajar di Kota Manado dan sekitarnya terlebih bagi siswa siswi Yayasan Eben Haezar. Dimana kecenderungan hiburan saat ini adalah pilihan hiburan yang konsumtif. Maka diperlukan perancangan suatu sarana yang tidak hanya bisa menghibur tapi sekaligus bersifat edukatif dan informative, yaitu Perpustakaan. Perpustakaan didesain dengan konsep yang fleksibel dan adaptif terhadap gaya hidup pelajar yang diaplikasikan dalam waktu dan fasilitas-fasilitasnya. perpustakaan dirancang dengan suasana yang menyenangkan, betah, dan privat sehingga pengunjung dapat membaca dengan suasana akrab seperti di rumah sendiri. Pemilihan site didasarkan pada pertimbangan karakteristik area dengan tingkat aktifitas yang tinggi. Berdasarkan tema Space as Language memungkinkan pengunjung untuk memperoleh pengalaman meruang yang berbeda saat melakukan aktifitas. Aplikasi tema ini terdapat pada pengolahan ruang dan bentuk arsitektural. Setiap bagian dari tahap ini memiliki fungsi ruang dengan suasana yang membawa pengalaman berbeda-beda bagi pengunjung. Akhirnya tujuan dari perancangan Perpustakaan Yayasan Eben Haezar ini adalah untuk menyebarkan kesenangan akan membaca, menumbuh-kembangkan kebiasaan membaca dan mencari informasi yang menyenangkan, dengan menawarkan pengalaman baru dengan konsep yang nyaman seperti dirumah

    Penyakit diare termasuk kolera masih merupakan masalah kesehatan yang penting untuk Indonesia. Kejadian luar biasa (KLB) "muntah-berak" masih terus dilaporkan dari berbagai daerah di Indonesia. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan untuk mengatasi keadaan ini adalah menemukan suatu vaksin yang aman, praktis dan terjangkau harganya. CVD-103 adalah strain V. cholerae yang sebagian besar gen penyebab diare, toksin subunit A, telah dibuang. Pada penelitian dengan peserta anak-anak di Jakarta, CVD 103-HgR ternyata memberikan kenaikan antibodi dan dapat diterima baik oleh anak-anak Indonesia berusia 5-9 tahun dan 25-59 bulan. Di samping itu pemeriksaan sampel bakteriologik dari lingkungan dekat tempat kediaman peserta dengan menggunakan teknik yang peka untuk mendeteksi V. cholerae, tidak menemukan adanya strain vaksin. Suatu penelitian lapangan dengan tujuan untuk menilai kemanjuran dosis tunggal vaksin oral kolera CVD 103-HgR untuk pencegahan kolera secara klinis selama tiga tahun, telah dimulai didaerah Jakarta Utara pada tahun 1993. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menetapkan kemanjuran vaksin terhadap berbagai kelompok umur, terhadap kolera berat, serta membandingkan kemanjurannya pada peserta dengan golongan darah O. Jumlah penduduk yang ikut dalam penilaian vaksin ini adalah 67.000 peserta sukarela. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat diketahui pada akhir tahun 1996.Di samping penelitian tentang vaksin kolera, NAMRU dan Badan Litbangkes juga telah ikut serta dalam berbagai penelitian WHO, misalnya tentang larutan garam oralit (ORS) yang dilakukan di RS Karantina/RS Penyakit Infeksi Prof. Dr. Sulianti Saroso. Salah satu penelitian terakhir adalah manfaat larutan ORS dengan osmolaritas rendah pada tahun 1994. Hasil penelitian ini telah mendorong WHO untuk melaksanakan penelitian dengan larutan yang sama di berbagai pusat penelitian (multicenter) pada tahun 1995 sebelum mengusulkan suatu Perubahan formulasi larutan ORS secara global

    'Reaching the hard to reach' - lessons learned from the VCS (voluntary and community Sector). A qualitative study.

    Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement. Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services

    Commitment to seeking an evidence-informed approachWhen it comes to player welfare, Rugby Union governing bodies have committed to seeking and funding an evidence-informed approach. This involves using research to make informed decisions about policy, laws and injury prevention programmes. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has informed player safety, for example, modifications to scrum laws to reduce catastrophic head and neck injuries.1 However, major gaps remain, including tackle research focusing on the womenā€™s game.2A socioecological perspectiveIt is well understood that player welfare, specifically injury prevention, is a complex issue. To effectively address these complexities and make a long-term impact requires a dynamic socioecological approach.3 ,4 An athlete operates within a socioecological structure (individual, interpersonal, organisational, community) that is influenced by a web of inter-related factors and actors, both of which change over time and/or when a factor/actor is modified (figure 1). Typically, injury prevention research will identify player level factors that influence injury risk (risk factors), and aim to modify these factors through behaviour change interventions. However, the socioecological view emphasises understanding contextual factors influencing implementation of such modifications. For example, if the behaviour intervention is a training programme, how much time is available to implement the training programme? Or, is the training programme appropriate for all sexes

    Use of Modified Camp Test for Preliminary Nonserologic Identification of Vibrio Cholerae in Stool Specimens

    Suatu modifikasi uji CAMP digunakan bersama dengan reaksi biokimiawi untuk identifikasi Vibrio cholerae pada sampel klinis. Dari 579 USAp dubur penderita diare, 92 (16%) memberikan hasil isolasi V. cholerae 01 biotipe El Tor dan 34 (6%) V. cholerae non-01. Semua isolat V. cholerae 01 El Tor menunjukkan reaksi CAMP positif kuat dengan gambaran hemolisis sinergistik lengkap berbentuk sosis; sedangkan V. cholerae non-01 memberikan reaksi CAMP yang sempit dengan pola hemolisis menyerupai bulan sabit. Hasil uji CAMP yang dilakukan bersama dengan reaksi biokimiawi sesuai dengan metode biakan konvensional yang menyertakan tes aglutinasi dengan antiserum V. cholerae 01 untuk mengidentifikasi V. cholerae

    Postirradiation lumbosacral radiculopathy following seminoma treatment presenting as flaccid neuropathic bladder: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Postirradiation lumbosacral syndrome is a radiculopathy induced by radiation injury to the spinal cord. Its usual presentation is motor deficit and or sensory loss involving the lower limbs. Visceral involvement has not been reported previously.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe a case of severe hypotonic bladder caused by radiation-induced spinal cord injury following treatment of stage Ī™ testicular seminoma in a 38-year-old Caucasian man who had undergone radical orchidectomy and prophylactic paraaortic lymph node irradiation for stage Ī™ seminoma. Three years later he had clinical and urodynamic findings of hypotonic bladder. The magnetic resonance imaging results suggested a radiation-induced injury.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Such an unusual presentation of the syndrome of postirradiation lumbosacral radiculopathy can impose a clinical challenge to practicing clinicians. Future studies are required to further delineate the mechanism of injury and further management plans.</p
