With a Little Creativity, A Consumer Health Radio Show’s Blog Advances Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility

Research indicates that low health literacy contributes to health and health care problems. It also shows that most adults search online for health information. Health sciences librarians have partnered with physicians on a weekly consumer health radio show and companion blog for over ten years. Librarians find, evaluate, and select information resources about topics covered on the radio show that address these health information needs. They also manage and contribute to the blog. Librarians undertook a review of topics related to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) to determine their coverage and discoverability on the show’s blog. They also explored ways to improve discoverability of these topics. They found that although there were some content gaps, there were a number of shows on topics relevant to IDEA, including healthcare reform, race, implicit bias, effects of discrimination, LGBT health, gender bias, aging, farm worker health, mental illness and discrimination, bullying, addiction, domestic violence, homelessness, and health disparities. Librarians determined that discovery of these resources could be improved by bringing together blog posts on similar topics. A future, more structured examination of topics could surface additional IDEA topics for enhanced discoverability and gaps to be shared with the show’s producer and host to inform future show content

Building Relationships through Collaborative Outreach Projects: A New Vision of Collaborating using Digital Media

Using examples from completed and current projects, this poster shows use of digital media tools to create new resources and services in collaboration with and outreach to Health Affairs faculty, students, alumni, patients, families, and the wider community. We hope to stimulate thinking and provide inspiration for others who are interested in undertaking innovative projects using digital media.
