Digital Image Users and Reuse: Enhancing practitioner discoverability of digital library reuse based on user file naming behavior

The author performs two verification studies investigating two previously employed strategies that practitioners use to identify digital object reuse, specifically Google Images reverse image lookup (RIL) and embedded metadata. It describes these strategy limitations and offers a new, unique approach for tracking reuse by employing the author's search approach based on user file naming behavior. While exploring the utility and limitations of Google Images and embedded metadata, the author observes and documents a pattern of user file naming behavior that exhibits promise for improving practitioner's discoverability of reuse. The author conducts a file naming assessment investigation to examine this pattern of user file naming behavior and the impact of file naming on search engine optimization. The author derives several significant findings while completing this study. The author establishes that Google Images is no longer a viable tool to discover reuse by the general public or other users except for industry users because of its algorithm change. Embedded metadata is not a reliable assessment tool because of the non-persistent nature of embedded metadata. The author finds that many users generate their own file names, almost exclusively human-readable when saving and sharing digital images. The author argues that when practitioners model search terms after the "aggregated file names" they increase their discovery of reused digital objects
Understanding Ultimate Use Data and its Implication for Digital Library Management: A Case Study
Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for over two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to their patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart Service is the reporting mechanism that produces data that includes intended use information. This article discusses the analysis of this data to determine why images were used, what products were created from the images, and what implications this has on digital library management. The authors believe that answering these questions creates an environment in which digital library innovators can better promote and design digital libraries, and describe and select the content in them
Building an Online Data Management Plan Tool
Following the 2011 announcement by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that it would begin requiring Data Management Plans with every funding application, the University of Houston Libraries explored ways to support our campus researchers in meeting this requirement. A small team of librarians built an online tool using a Drupal module. The tool includes informational content, an interactive questionnaire, and an extensive FAQ to meet diverse researcher needs. This easily accessible and locally maintained tool allows us to provide a high level of personalized service to our researchers
Analyzing Public Opinion of the Silver Lake Reservoir
Silver Lake, California is a diverse residential neighborhood located five miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, with a population of approximately32,890 people. Silver Lake was built around its local reservoir, the facilities of which provide habitat for wildlife, recreational opportunities, and aesthetic, social, and wellness benefits for visitors. Presumably, the reservoir also mitigates the urban heat island effect. Since the reservoir was recently refilled with water, the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council (SLNC) plans to update the reservoir management plan, informed by public input and assessment. A team of CUResresearchers surveyed 249 citizens in person around the Silver Lake neighborhood to gather public opinion on the reservoir’s facilities, including possible improvements in water accessibility, educational opportunities, and infrastructure. This same survey was also voluntarily taken online by 1014 people. This study serves to analyze the results of the survey to conclude the main concerns of Silver Lake residents and visitors. A majority of the surveyed subjects proved to be informed about the environmental and ecological effects of the reservoir. The majority also showed certain interest and concern for public accessibility, increased traffic, and improved facilities. Acknowledgment of both societal and ecological benefits of the reservoir substantiates a diverse array of public recommendations. The collected information is hoped to play a major role in the continued development of the reservoir management plan, the outcomes of which have potential to bolster the Silver Lake reservoir as a vital, dynamic green space serving both citizens and local flora and fauna.https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/cures_posters/1031/thumbnail.jp
File Naming in Digital Media Research: Examples from the Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper identifies organizational challenges faced by Social Science and Humanities (SSH) scholars when dealing with digital data and media, and suggests improved file naming practices in order to maximize organization, making files easier to find, more useable, and more easily shared. We argue that such skills are not formally discussed in the literature and therefore many scholars do not recognize the problem until they cannot locate a specific file or are sharing files with colleagues. We asked SSH scholars to share their file naming strategies (or lack thereof ) and we use these narrative anecdotes to discuss common problems and suggest possible solutions for their general file naming needs
Embedded Metadata Patterns Across Web Sharing Environments
This research project tried to determine how or if embedded metadata followed the digital object as it was shared on social media platforms by using EXIFTool, a variety of social media platforms and user profiles, the embedded metadata extracted from selected New York Public Library (NYPL) and Europeana images, PDFs from open access science journals, and captured mobile phone images. The goal of the project was to clarify which embedded metadata fields, if any, migrated with the object as it was shared across social media
Finding Roots, Gems, and Inspiration: Understanding Ultimate Use of Digital Materials
The University of Houston Digital Library (UHDL) is the point of virtual access for digitized cultural, historical and research materials for the university’s libraries. UHDL developed a digital cart” system (DCS) that allow users to download high resolution images from its collections. The DCS records important information supplied by the user regarding the ultimate use of the downloaded images. Until now, no formal analysis of the transaction log for the DCS has been completed. This research is significant because little is known about the ultimate use of digital library materials. Current literature suggests that this problem is not uncommon among digital libraries around the world. Our analysis begins to fill a critical gap in the professional conversation on digital libraries by directly contributing to the small body of literature that is asking who uses digital libraries and for what purposes. This presentation will outline how researchers analyzed data from portions of the transaction logs from the DCS from 2010 to 2013. From this analysis, they will highlight some of the interesting and innovative ultimate uses by patrons. The researchers will discuss the study and offer audience members approaches for analyzing data to determine ultimate use and its ramifications inside and outside of the classroom

Novel mutations expand the clinical spectrum of DYNC1H1-associated spinal muscular atrophy
OBJECTIVE
To expand the clinical phenotype of autosomal dominant congenital spinal muscular atrophy with lower extremity predominance (SMA-LED) due to mutations in the dynein, cytoplasmic 1, heavy chain 1 (DYNC1H1) gene.
METHODS
Patients with a phenotype suggestive of a motor, non-length-dependent neuronopathy predominantly affecting the lower limbs were identified at participating neuromuscular centers and referred for targeted sequencing of DYNC1H1.
RESULTS
We report a cohort of 30 cases of SMA-LED from 16 families, carrying mutations in the tail and motor domains of DYNC1H1, including 10 novel mutations. These patients are characterized by congenital or childhood-onset lower limb wasting and weakness frequently associated with cognitive impairment. The clinical severity is variable, ranging from generalized arthrogryposis and inability to ambulate to exclusive and mild lower limb weakness. In many individuals with cognitive impairment (9/30 had cognitive impairment) who underwent brain MRI, there was an underlying structural malformation resulting in polymicrogyric appearance. The lower limb muscle MRI shows a distinctive pattern suggestive of denervation characterized by sparing and relative hypertrophy of the adductor longus and semitendinosus muscles at the thigh level, and diffuse involvement with relative sparing of the anterior-medial muscles at the calf level. Proximal muscle histopathology did not always show classic neurogenic features.
CONCLUSION
Our report expands the clinical spectrum of DYNC1H1-related SMA-LED to include generalized arthrogryposis. In addition, we report that the neurogenic peripheral pathology and the CNS neuronal migration defects are often associated, reinforcing the importance of DYNC1H1 in both central and peripheral neuronal functions
