Capacities for Sustainable Production of Beef in Eastern Cuba
Alternatives for calf and cattle fattening were validated, and capacities for beef production in grazing conditions were improved in the eastern part of Cuba. The reproductive behaviors of female Charolais, Creole and Zebu were evaluated for artificial insemination, along with the population data from the cattle fattening units. The herds from those breeds showed higher productivity, especially Charolais, which was higher than the other two. Only thirtysix percent of overall beef production is generated during the fattening stage; 43 % of weight achieved during fattening is produced in the calves, during reproduction. When fattening was started in the late rainy season, or early dry season, the final weights were significantly higher than the starting weights of animals that initiated fattening sometime else in the year. This can be linked to the relative contribution made by the concentrate supplement administered in the first months of fattening, around 30 % of the animal ingestion capacity, with effects on food conversion, and mitigating declines in availability and the quality of pasture in that period. If efficient exploitation capacities are created for these breeds, greater beef yields may be achieved, which will have a positive effect on cattle recovery in Cuba
Thirty-eight dairy farms, located in three climatic regions out of the four which define rainfall within Valle del Cauto in Granma province, Cuba, were sampled in order to determine herd reproductive efficiency. A survey system including variables that characterize technological and ecological processes determining herd reproductive efficiency was applied to each dairy farm. Two different multivariational methods were used i. e., a factorial analysis through by the method main components method to establish the factors influencing upon the herds, reproductive behavior and a cluster analysis to group dairy farms. A variance analysis was also carried out to find out the influence of cattle yard number on birth rate in the sampled dairy farms. The herd reproductive efficiency depends on two factors which explain the 94 % variance detected, i. e., production organization and cow management after calving. The most relevant variables were cattle yard number, grazing method herd physical condition nightly grazing time, grazing hours herd management during rut detection, and calf age at weaning. The more intensive the grazing sys- tem was, the higher dairy farms reproductive efficiency resulted. Herds under restricted grazing systems showed higher reproduc- tive indexes than other evaluated systems.
Capacities for Sustainable Production of Beef in East Cuba.ABSTRACTAlternatives for calf and cattle fattening were validated, and capacities for beef production in grazing conditions were improved in the Eastern part of Cuba.
The aim of this study was to determine the apparent faecal digestibility of a diet including sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L) seed meal in growing creole pigs. Two male castrated pigs were used, body weight of 50 ± 2 kg, housed in metabolic cages, and under a 2x2 Latin square design. The pigs were fed diets with 0 (control) and 15% inclusion of sacha inchi seed meal, respectively. In the experimental diets and in the faeces it was determined: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), fat, nitrogen-free extracts (NFE), gross energy (EB), calcium (CA) and phosphorus (P). The highest apparent digestibility coefficients of DM (82.38%) and P (32.32%) were obtained in the control diet (p<0.05). There were no significant differences for the digestibility of CP, CF, fat, NFE and Ca. In conclusion, the inclusion of 15% sacha inchi seed meal in the diet of growing creole pigs does not affect the apparent digestibility of CP, CF, fat, NFE and Ca, allowing a feed with high nutritional value.
Key factors affecting livestock production efficiency on 103 cattle ranches from Makenaf II Livestock Center, with different and holding features and distributed over a wide area surpassing 18 800 ha, were determined. The basis for a livestock arrangement program was established. Sixteen cattle ranches were sampled and surveyed in order to evaluate the behaviour of technological, organizational, and ecological processes determining livestock production efficiency. 96 variables characterizing the production process were included in the survey. Main component multivaried techniques were used for data statistical analysis as a way to define the key factors determining livestock production efficiency on the cattle ranches. The factors were chosen by the main components method, the Varimax method for matrix rotation, and the conglomerate analysis for cattle ranches arrangement. The
complete linkage method and the euclidian distance were used to estimate the distance matrix as an arrangement strategy. A number of management traits such as percentage of cows discarded from reproduction, weaned-off calf age, heifer percentage within dairy farms, grazing time and load showed a uniform behaviour, no matter differences in land holding features, grazing load capacity, environment situation, and production ends, which negatively impacted upon herd birth rate, production level, and livestock survival within the territory. Besides, the inefficient grazing management and biosecurity standards violation have had a negative impact on the environment, i.e., they have provoked the grazing system deterioration, the wild marabou dissemination, and pest plant invasion which decrease systems biomass and affect biodiversity in a long run. The key factors determining livestock production efficiency in Jobabo municipality are production and reproduction process organization. Both explain the system 56 % variance.
Study on multi-ELVES in the Pierre Auger Observatory
Since 2013, the four sites of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory record ELVES with a dedicated trigger. These UV light emissions are correlated to distant lightning strikes. The length of recorded traces has been increased from 100 μs (2013), to 300 μs (2014-16), to 900 μs (2017-present), to progressively extend the observation of the light emission towards the vertical of the causative lightning and beyond. A large fraction of the observed events shows double ELVES within the time window, and, in some cases, even more complex structures are observed. The nature of the multi-ELVES is not completely understood but may be related to the different types of lightning in which they are originated. For example, it is known that Narrow Bipolar Events can produce double ELVES, and Energetic In-cloud Pulses, occurring between the main negative and upper positive charge layer of clouds, can induce double and even quadruple ELVES in the ionosphere. This report shows the seasonal and daily dependence of the time gap, amplitude ratio, and correlation between the pulse widths of the peaks in a sample of 1000+ multi-ELVES events recorded during the period 2014-20. The events have been compared with data from other satellite and ground-based sensing devices to study the correlation of their properties with lightning observables such as altitude and polarity
A search for ultra-high-energy photons at the Pierre Auger Observatory exploiting air-shower universality
The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive detector to primary photons with energies above ∼0.2 EeV. It measures extensive air showers using a hybrid technique that combines a fluorescence detector (FD) with a ground array of particle detectors (SD). The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth at the shower maximum (X) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced background. Using observables measured by the FD and SD, three photon searches in different energy bands are performed. In particular, between threshold energies of 1-10 EeV, a new analysis technique has been developed by combining the FD-based measurement of X with the SD signal through a parameter related to its muon content, derived from the universality of the air showers. This technique has led to a better photon/hadron separation and, consequently, to a higher search sensitivity, resulting in a tighter upper limit than before. The outcome of this new analysis is presented here, along with previous results in the energy ranges below 1 EeV and above 10 EeV. From the data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory in about 15 years of operation, the most stringent constraints on the fraction of photons in the cosmic flux are set over almost three decades in energy
