Web-based database for facial expression analysis
ABSTRACT * In the last decade, the research topic of automatic analysis of facial expressions has become a central topic in machine vision research. Nonetheless, there is a glaring lack of a comprehensive, readily accessible reference set of face images that could be used as a basis for benchmarks for efforts in the field. This lack of easily accessible, suitable, common testing resource forms the major impediment to comparing and extending the issues concerned with automatic facial expression analysis. In this paper, we discuss a number of issues that make the problem of creating a benchmark facial expression database difficult. We then present the MMI Facial Expression Database, which includes more than 1500 samples of both static images and image sequences of faces in frontal and in profile view displaying various expressions of emotion, single and multiple facial muscle activation. It has been built as a web-based direct-manipulation application, allowing easy access and easy search of the available images. This database represents the most comprehensive reference set of images for studies on facial expression analysis to date. 1

The significance of indirect costs in the cost price calculation of

method has been investigated. A cost structure model based on the ‘production centres’ method, the Academisch Ziekenhuis Groningen
(AZG) 1-2-3 model, is used for the calculation of cost and cost
prices as an add-in tool to the spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3.
The system specifications of the AZG 1-2-3 cost structure model
have been extended with facilities to impute all relevant indirect
costs to cost centres by aid of allocation rules, which can be chosen
freely. The inference is made that as indirect costs play a more
important part in decision-making processes concerning planning
and control, the specification of the relation to the cost centres
should be determined in a more detailed way. The AZG 1-2-3 cost
structure model has therefore been extended in order to increase the
significance as a management tool for laboratory management
An experimental proposal to study collapse of the wave function in travelling-wave parametric amplifiers
The read-out of a microwave qubit state occurs using an amplification chain
that enlarges the quantum state to a signal detectable with a classical
measurement apparatus. However, at what point in this process did we really
`measure' the quantum state? In order to investigate whether the `measurement'
takes place in the amplification chain, we propose to construct a microwave
interferometer that has a parametric amplifier added to each of its arms.
Feeding the interferometer with single photons, the visibility depends on the
gain of the amplifiers and whether a measurement collapse has taken place
during the amplification process. We calculate the interference visibility as
given by standard quantum mechanics as a function of gain, insertion loss and
temperature and find a magnitude of in the limit of large gain without
taking into account losses. This number reduces to in case the insertion
loss of the amplifiers is dB at a temperature of mK. We show that if
the wave function collapses within the interferometer, we will measure a
reduced visibility compared to the prediction from standard quantum mechanics

Gender and Vascular Complications in the JAK2 V617F-Positive Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
We previously found that gender influenced the JAK2 V617F allele burden, but it is unknown whether this gender difference in molecular epidemiology influences complications in the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Historically, vascular complications represented the most common cause of mortality in polycythemia vera and essential thrombocytosis and contributed to morbidity in primary myelofibrosis. To determine the influence of gender on vascular complications, we retrospectively analyzed associations between gender and vascular complications. Despite their younger age, less prevalent dyslipidemia or smoking history, lower white blood counts, and lower JAK2 V617F allele burden, women had higher rates of abdominal venous thrombosis and comparable rates of all vascular complications. Vascular risk is currently not easily stratified by MPN-disease burden or traditional risk factors. Our analysis contributes to growing literature emphasizing gender differences in the MPN and further supports the important impact of individual and host variation on MPN clinical manifestations, and especially vascular risk

The WHO 2013 oral glucose tolerance test:The utility of isolated glucose measurements - A retrospective cohort study
Objective: The WHO 2013 guidelines recommend screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by 3-point oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate GDM diagnosed by an isolated high glucose. Study design: We included pregnant women deemed at risk for GDM were offered GDM screening. We examined the records of 1939 consecutively screened pregnancies at two teaching hospitals in Amsterdam during 2016–2020. Using the WHO 2013 diagnostic criteria, we calculated the proportion of GDM cases diagnosed by isolated abnormal glucose values. Results: Among those screened in our high risk cohort, GDM incidence was 31.5%. Of the GDM diagnoses, 57.0% were based on an isolated fasting glucose value, 30.9% based on multiple raised glucose measurements, 7.4% on an isolated raised 2-hour glucose and 4.7% on an isolated raised 1-hour glucose. For 1-hour glucose, the number needed to screen was 67 persons for one additional GDM case. Conclusion: The 1-hour glucose in the 3 point OGTT, as suggested by the WHO 2013 guidelines for GDM, contributes only small numbers of GDM cases and a high number needed to screen (67 for 1 additional case in a selective high risk GDM screening strategy), and is likely even less effective in universally screened populations.</p
