Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Directed Small-World Networks
Many social, biological, and economic systems can be approached by complex
networks of interacting units. The behaviour of several models on small-world
networks has recently been studied. These models are expected to capture the
essential features of the complex processes taking place on real networks like
disease spreading, formation of public opinion, distribution of wealth, etc. In
many of these systems relations are directed, in the sense that links only act
in one direction (outwards or inwards). We investigate the effect of directed
links on the behaviour of a simple spin-like model evolving on a small-world
network. We show that directed networks may lead to a highly nontrivial phase

Emergent Nesting of the Fermi Surface from Local-Moment Description of Iron-Pnictide High-Tc Superconductors
We uncover the low-energy spectrum of a t-J model for electrons on a square
lattice of spin-1 iron atoms with 3dxz and 3dyz orbital character by applying
Schwinger-boson-slave-fermion mean-field theory and by exact diagonalization of
one hole roaming over a 4 x 4 x 2 lattice. Hopping matrix elements are set to
produce hole bands centered at zero two-dimensional (2D) momentum in the
free-electron limit. Holes can propagate coherently in the t-J model below a
threshold Hund coupling when long-range antiferromagnetic order across the d+ =
3d(x+iy)z and d- = 3d(x-iy)z orbitals is established by magnetic frustration
that is off-diagonal in the orbital indices. This leads to two hole-pocket
Fermi surfaces centered at zero 2D momentum. Proximity to a commensurate
spin-density wave (cSDW) that exists above the threshold Hund coupling results
in emergent Fermi surface pockets about cSDW momenta at a quantum critical
point (QCP). This motivates the introduction of a new Gutzwiller wavefunction
for a cSDW metal state. Study of the spin-fluctuation spectrum at cSDW momenta
indicates that the dispersion of the nested band of one-particle states that
emerges is electron-type. Increasing Hund coupling past the QCP can push the
hole-pocket Fermi surfaces centered at zero 2D momentum below the Fermi energy
level, in agreement with recent determinations of the electronic structure of
mono-layer iron-selenide superconductors.Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, published versio
Universality Classes of Diagonal Quantum Spin Ladders
We find the classification of diagonal spin ladders depending on a
characteristic integer in terms of ferrimagnetic, gapped and critical
phases. We use the finite algorithm DMRG, non-linear sigma model and
bosonization techniques to prove our results. We find stoichiometric contents
in cuprate planes that allow for the existence of weakly interacting

Improving photon-hadron discrimination based on cosmic ray surface detector data
The search for photons at EeV energies and beyond has considerable
astrophysical interest and will remain one of the key challenges for ultra-high
energy cosmic ray (UHECR) observatories in the near future. Several upper
limits to the photon flux have been established since no photon has been
unambiguously observed up to now. An improvement in the reconstruction
efficiency of the photon showers and/or better discrimination tools are needed
to improve these limits apart from an increase in statistics. Following this
direction, we analyze in this work the ability of the surface parameter Sb,
originally proposed for hadron discrimination, for photon search.
Semi-analytical and numerical studies are performed in order to optimize Sb
for the discrimination of photons from a proton background in the energy range
from 10^18.5 to 10^19.6 eV. Although not shown explicitly, the same analysis
has been performed for Fe nuclei and the corresponding results are discussed
when appropriate. The effects of different array geometries and the
underestimation of the muon component in the shower simulations are analyzed,

Cooper-pair coherence in a superfluid Fermi-gas of atoms
We study the coherence properties of a trapped two-component gas of fermionic
atoms below the BCS critical temperature. We propose an optical method to
investigate the Cooper-pair coherence across different regions of the
superfluid. Near-resonant laser light is used to induce transitions between the
two coupled hyperfine states. The beam is split so that it probes two spatially
separate regions of the gas. Absorption of the light in this interferometric

Four-way regulation of mosquito yolk protein precursor genes by juvenile hormone-, ecdysone-, nutrient-, and insulin-like peptide signaling pathways.
Anautogenous mosquito females require a meal of vertebrate blood in order to initiate the production of yolk protein precursors by the fat body. Yolk protein precursor gene expression is tightly repressed in a state-of-arrest before blood meal-related signals activate it and expression levels rise rapidly. The best understood example of yolk protein precursor gene regulation is the vitellogenin-A gene (vg) of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. Vg-A is regulated by (1) juvenile hormone signaling, (2) the ecdysone-signaling cascade, (3) the nutrient sensitive target-of-rapamycin signaling pathway, and (4) the insulin-like peptide (ILP) signaling pathway. A plethora of new studies have refined our understanding of the regulation of yolk protein precursor genes since the last review on this topic in 2005 (Attardo et al., 2005). This review summarizes the role of these four signaling pathways in the regulation of vg-A and focuses upon new findings regarding the interplay between them on an organismal level
