    A Phase Space Approach to Gravitational Enropy

    We examine the definition S = ln Omega as a candidate "gravitational entropy" function. We calculate its behavior for gravitationl and density perturbations in closed, open and flat cosmologies and find that in all cases it increases monotonically. Using the formalism to calculate the gravitational entropy produced during inflation gives the canonical answer. We compare the behavior of S with the behavior of the square of the Weyl tensor.     Synaptotagmin 1 oligomers clamp and regulate different modes of neurotransmitter release

    Release of neurotransmitters relies on submillisecond coupling of synaptic vesicle fusion to the triggering signal: AP-evoked presynaptic Ca2+ influx. The key player that controls exocytosis of the synaptic vesicle is the Ca2+ sensor synaptotagmin 1 (Syt1). While the Ca2+ activation of Syt1 has been extensively characterized, how Syt1 reversibly clamps vesicular fusion remains enigmatic. Here, using a targeted mutation combined with fluorescence imaging and electrophysiology, we show that the structural feature of Syt1 to self-oligomerize provides the molecular basis for clamping of spontaneous and asynchronous release but is not required for triggering of synchronous release. Our findings propose a mechanistic model that explains how Syt1 oligomers regulate different modes of transmitter release in neuronal synapses

    Association between Outdoor Air Pollution and Childhood Leukemia: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis.

    BackgroundA causal link between outdoor air pollution and childhood leukemia has been proposed, but some older studies suffer from methodological drawbacks. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic reviews have summarized the most recently published evidence and no analyses have examined the dose-response relation.ObjectiveWe investigated the extent to which outdoor air pollution, especially as resulting from traffic-related contaminants, affects the risk of childhood leukemia.MethodsWe searched all case-control and cohort studies that have investigated the risk of childhood leukemia in relation to exposure either to motorized traffic and related contaminants, based on various traffic-related metrics (number of vehicles in the closest roads, road density, and distance from major roads), or to measured or modeled levels of air contaminants such as benzene, nitrogen dioxide, 1,3-butadiene, and particulate matter. We carried out a meta-analysis of all eligible studies, including nine studies published since the last systematic review and, when possible, we fit a dose-response curve using a restricted cubic spline regression model.ResultsWe found 29 studies eligible to be included in our review. In the dose-response analysis, we found little association between disease risk and traffic indicators near the child's residence for most of the exposure range, with an indication of a possible excess risk only at the highest levels. In contrast, benzene exposure was positively and approximately linearly associated with risk of childhood leukemia, particularly for acute myeloid leukemia, among children under 6 y of age, and when exposure assessment at the time of diagnosis was used. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide showed little association with leukemia risk except at the highest levels.DiscussionOverall, the epidemiologic literature appears to support an association between benzene and childhood leukemia risk, with no indication of any threshold effect. A role for other measured and unmeasured pollutants from motorized traffic is also possible. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP4381

    Computer simulations of domain growth and phase separation in two-dimensional binary immiscible fluids using dissipative particle dynamics

    We investigate the dynamical behavior of binary fluid systems in two dimensions using dissipative particle dynamics. We find that following a symmetric quench the domain size R(t) grows with time t according to two distinct algebraic laws R(t) = t^n: at early times n = 1/2, while for later times n = 2/3. Following an asymmetric quench we observe only n = 1/2, and if momentum conservation is violated we see n = 1/3 at early times. Bubble simulations confirm the existence of a finite surface tension and the validity of Laplace's law. Our results are compared with similar simulations which have been performed previously using molecular dynamics, lattice-gas and lattice-Boltzmann automata, and Langevin dynamics. We conclude that dissipative particle dynamics is a promising method for simulating fluid properties in such systems.Comment: RevTeX; 22 pages, 5 low-resolution figures.     Surgical management of subaortic obstruction in single left ventricle and tricuspid atresia

    Subaortic obstruction caused by either a restrictive bulboventricular foramen in single left ventricle with an outflow chamber or by a restrictive ventricular septal defect in tricuspid atresia with transposition of the great arteries can lead to a hypertrophied, noncompliant ventricle and excessive pulmonary blood flow. This combination is disadvantageous to potential Fontan procedure candidates because they are dependent on good ventricular function and low pulmonary vascular resistance for survival.The results of surgical procedures to directly or indirectly relieve significant subaortic obstruction (gradient 30 mm Hg) in 24 patients, 16 with single left ventricle and 8 with tricuspid atresia, were reviewed. Four patients had a left ventricular apex to descending aorta valved conduit; none survived. Seven patients had resection of subaortic tissue; four survived and four developed heart block at surgery. Adequate gradient relief was evident in only one of the four survivors. Thirteen patients had a main pulmonary artery to ascending aorta anastomosis or conduit; six survived. AH survivors had adequate gradient relief. The overall survival was 42% (10 of 24). None of seven patients with a subaortic gradient >75 mm Hg survived.These data show that: 1) Surgical relief of established subaortic obstruction in patients with single left ventricle and tricuspid atresia carries a high mortality rate, especially if the subaortic gradient is >75 mm Hg. 2) The best procedure appears to be the pulmonary artery to ascending aorta anastomosis. 3) A clearer understanding of the factors leading to the development of significant subaortic obstruction is necessary to prevent it or to devise improved therapeutic strategies

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations of lamellar and droplet phases

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations are used to investigate spinodal decomposition in a two-dimensional binary fluid with equilibrium lamellar and droplet phases. We emphasise the importance of hydrodynamic flow to the phase separation kinetics. For mixtures slightly asymmetric in composition the fluid phase separates into bulk and lamellar phases with the lamellae forming distinctive spiral structures to minimise their elastic energy.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

    A free-boundary model of diffusive valley growth: theory and observation

    Valleys that form around a stream head often develop characteristic finger-like elevation contours. We study the processes involved in the formation of these valleys and introduce a theoretical model that indicates how shape may inform the underlying processes. We consider valley growth as the advance of a moving boundary travelling forward purely through linearly diffusive erosion, and we obtain a solution for the valley shape in three dimensions. Our solution compares well to the shape of slowly growing groundwater-fed valleys found in Bristol, Florida. Our results identify a new feature in the formation of groundwater-fed valleys: a spatially variable diffusivity that can be modelled by a fixed-height moving boundary

    Granular Avalanches in Fluids

    Three regimes of granular avalanches in fluids are put in light depending on the Stokes number St which prescribes the relative importance of grain inertia and fluid viscous effects, and on the grain/fluid density ratio r. In gas (r >> 1 and St > 1, e.g., the dry case), the amplitude and time duration of avalanches do not depend on any fluid effect. In liquids (r ~ 1), for decreasing St, the amplitude decreases and the time duration increases, exploring an inertial regime and a viscous regime. These regimes are described by the analysis of the elementary motion of one grain

    Three dimensional hysdrodynamic lattice-gas simulations of binary immiscible and ternary amphiphilic flow through porous media

    We report the results of a study of multiphase flow in porous media. A Darcy's law for steady multiphase flow was investigated for both binary and ternary amphiphilic flow. Linear flux-forcing relationships satisfying Onsager reciprocity were shown to be a good approximation of the simulation data. The dependence of the relative permeability coefficients on water saturation was investigated and showed good qualitative agreement with experimental data. Non-steady state invasion flows were investigated, with particular interest in the asymptotic residual oil saturation. The addition of surfactant to the invasive fluid was shown to significantly reduce the residual oil saturation.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Long‐term hematologic and clinical outcomes of splenectomy in children with hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell disease

    BackgroundTotal splenectomy (TS) and partial splenectomy (PS) are used for children with congenital hemolytic anemia (CHA), although the long‐term outcomes of these procedures are poorly defined. This report describes long‐term outcomes of children with CHA requiring TS or PS.ProcedureWe collected data from children ages 2‐17 with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) or sickle cell disease (SCD) requiring TS or PS from 1996 to 2016 from 14 sites in the Splenectomy in Congenital Hemolytic Anemia (SICHA) consortium using a prospective, observational patient registry. We summarized hematologic outcomes, clinical outcomes, and adverse events to 5 years after surgery. Hematologic outcomes were compared using mixed effects modeling.ResultsOver the study period, 110 children with HS and 97 children with SCD underwent TS or PS. From preoperatively compared to postoperatively, children with HS increased their mean hemoglobin level by 3.4 g/dL, decreased their mean reticulocyte percentage by 6.7%, and decreased their mean bilirubin by 2.4 mg/dL. Hematologic improvements and improved clinical outcomes were sustained over 5 years of follow‐up. For children with SCD, there was no change in hemoglobin after PS or TS following surgery, although all clinical outcomes were improved. Over 5 years, there was one child with HS and five children with SCD who developed postsplenectomy sepsis.ConclusionsFor children with HS, there are excellent long‐term hematologic and clinical outcomes following either PS or TS.
