Obrieniolus, a new monotypic genus of Naupactini (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae) from the Peruvian Andes and its phylogenetic placement

A new monotypic genus of Naupactini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Obrieniolus del Río is described based on the new species Obrieniolus robustus del Río, endemic to Peru. This genus is easily recognized by the black, denuded and shiny integument, with imbricate microsculpture and the rounded body, with short, cordiform and moderately convex elytra. According to a cladistic analysis based on 69 continuous and discrete morphological characters, the new genus is the sister taxon of a group formed by Amitrus Schoenherr, Trichocyphus Heller, Amphideritus Schoenherr, Asymmathetes Wibmer & O'Brien and Galapaganus Lanteri. The paper includes habitus photographs, line drawings of genitalia, mouthparts, and other external features of taxonomic value, and a dichotomous key to the genera of Naupactini distributed in the South American Transition Zone.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Types of Scolytidae and Platypodidae (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) housed at the Museo de La Plata entomological collection

This contribution refers to the type material of Scolytidae and Platypodidae (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) housed at the Museo de La Plata collection. The specimens examined were mostly syntypes of Scolytidae, corresponding to species described by the German specialist Karl Schedl, from 1938 to 1958. They come from Argentina and were collected by the entomologists M. J. Viana, J. M. Bosq, and C. Bruch. We have examined more than 2000 specimens regarded as types, however, after the comparison of the information of their labels with that of the original species descriptions, only 308 of them were recognized as “true types”. They correspond to 46 nominal species (43 of Scolytidae and three of Platypodidae), currently assigned to 23 genera. For each species we provide the following information: original and valid names, bibliographic references, category of types, code-numbers according to the rules of the Museo de La Plata collection, sex of the specimens when it is indicated, data on the labels (exact transcriptions), and remarks.Esta contribución se refiere al material tipo de Scolytidae y Platypodidae (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) depositado en la colección del Museo de La Plata. Systematics and cladistics of a new Naupactini genus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) from the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador

A new genus of broad-nosed weevils belonging to the tribe Naupactini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is described, based on six species from the Páramo-Puna subregion (Andean region) of South America. Three species are new and three have been transferred from the genus Asymmathetes (Asymmathetes nigrans, Asymmathetes rugicollis, and Asymmathetes vulcanorum). The new genus is recognized by the black, denuded, and shiny tegument, the well-developed pre-epistome, the elytral base curved backwards on middle, the reduction of the hindwings, and the widely separated procoxae, closer to the anterior than to the posterior margin of the prosternum. A cladistic analysis of the six species of the new genus plus five out-groups (Amitrus, Amphideritus, Asymmathetes, Melanocyphus, and Trichocyphus), using 49 morphological characters, resulted in a single cladogram. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Adenda a los catálogos de tipos de Curculionoidea (Coleoptera) depositados en la colección entomológica del Museo de La Plata

En esta contribución se actualiza la información sobre el material tipo correspondiente a 23 especies de Coleoptera Curculionoidea, familias Belidae (subfamilia Oxycorininae) y Curculionidae (subfamilias Cyclominae y Entiminae), depositado en el Museo de La Plata (MLP). Las especies fueron descriptas por los especialistas R. S. Anderson, M. G. del Río, A. A. Lanteri, J. J. Morrone y F. Ocampo durante los últimos veinte años. También se incluyeron tipos correspondientes a especies de C. Bruch, K. Heller, E. Hambleton y A. Hustache, no tratadas en contribuciones previas. Para cada especie se brinda: nombre original y nombre válido, referencias bibliográficas, categorías de tipos, número de código de los ejemplares de acuerdo con las normas de la División Entomología del Museo de La Plata, sexo de los ejemplares cuando está indicado y datos mencionados en las etiquetas (transcripción exacta).In this contribution we update the information about the type material associated to 23 species of Coleoptera Curculionoidea, families Belidae (subfamily Oxycorininae) and Curculionidae (subfamilies Entiminae and Cyclominae), deposited at the Museo de La Plata (MLP). Taxonomic revision of the genus Stenocyphus Marshall (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) from Brazil

Stenocyphus Marshall, 1922 (Entiminae, Naupactini) includes three species: the type species S. bituberosus (Gyllenhal, 1833), S. tuberculatus (Hustache, 1938), comb. n. herein transferred from Neoericydeus Hustache, 1938, and S. sextuberosus sp. n. The genus is endemic to the Atlantic forests of the states of Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil and is mainly characterized by the presence of humped elytra bearing large conical tubercles on the intervals 5, or 3 and 5, or 3, 5 and 7. It shares some external morphological characters with Hadropus Schoenherr, 1826 and the Brazilian species of Cyrtomon Schoenherr 1823, but its phylogenetic position is uncertain. Herein we provide a diagnostic key to separate Stenocyphus from those genera, generic and species redescriptions or descriptions, a key to species, habitus photographs, line drawings of genitalia, and a discussion of the patterns of elytral tubercles in unrelated genera of Neotropical broad-nosed weevils.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Recognition of species groups of <i>Naupactus</i> Dejean (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) from Argentina and neighboring countries

Naupactus Dejean is the most diverse genus of the tribe Naupactini (Curculionidae: Entiminae), with more than 200 species occurring in South America, of which about 40 range in Argentina and neighboring countries. The Argentinean species treated herein were classified into nine groups having different biogeographic patterns: (1) the groups of Naupactus xanthographus, N. delicatulus and N. auricinctus mainly occur in northeastern Argentina (Misiones province) and reach the highest species diversity in the Atlantic and Parana forests of Brazil; (2) the groups of N. hirtellus, N. cinereidorsum, N. rivulosus and N. tarsalis show the highest species diversity in the Chacoan biogeographic province and also occur in the Yungas, Espinal, Monte, Parana forest (Argentina) and Cerrado (Brazil); (3) the groups of N. leucoloma and N. purpureoviolaceus have the highest species diversity in the Pampean biogeographic province, being also present in adjoining areas, mainly Chaco, Espinal, Monte and Parana forest. We provide descriptions, a dichotomous key, habitus photographs and line drawings of genitalia for the identification of the nine species groups, and a list of the Argentinean species from each group, together with their abbreviated synonymies, updated geographic distributions (including six new country records and several state/province records) and host plant associations. We discuss the characters that allow the separation of the species groups in a geographic distribution context, and provide information on species reassigned to genera other than Naupactus; among these, we transferred N. cephalotes (Hustache) to the tribe Tanymecini, genus Eurymetopellus, establishing the new combination Eurymetopellus cephalotes.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
