Dual source solar assisted heat pump model development, validation and comparison to conventional systems
This paper presents a new SAHP system integrated with hybrid photovoltaic/thermal panels (PVT). The main components of
the system developed are a dual-source HP, PVT panels and two storage tanks. The use of two storage tanks allows to directly store the hot water for DHW if water temperature reaches the set-point or to send it to the cold storage. On the other side, the use of two heat exchangers on source side, allows the system to switch from air to the cold tank increasing system’s performances.
In this work the developed system is compared with two conventional systems: an AWHP integrated with standard
photovoltaic panels and an AWHP integrated with hybrid PVT panels for DHW production only. Those systems were investigated for a single family house, through one year simulation in the TRNSYS software. Control strategy, size of the tanks and number of panels were investigated with parametric studies. Thanks to the good results of the simulations, an experimental prototype has been designed and built. Data observed from first monitoring campaign highlighted better performances than expected. After a season of investigation and data analysis for the system, new findings will be illustrate
Rehabilitation Machine for Bariatric Individuals
Obesity is known to be growing worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that obesity has tripled since 1975. In 2016, 39% of adults over 18 years old were overweight, and 13% were obese. Obesity is mostly preventable by adopting lifestyle improvements, enhancing diet quality, and doing physical exercise. The workload of the physical exercises should be proportionate to the patient’s capabilities. However, it must be considered that obese people are not used to training; they may not endure physical exertion and, even more critically, they could have some psychological impediments to the workouts. Physical exercises and equipment must, therefore, guarantee comfort and prevent situations in which the bariatric individual may feel inadequate. For these reasons, this study aims to design an innovative system to approach simple physical activities, like leg and arm exercises, to bariatric users to enable them to recover mobility and muscle tone gradually. The leading feature of this architecture is the design of hidden exercise mechanisms to overcome the psychological barriers of the users toward these kinds of machines. This paper proposes the initial design of the main sub-systems composing the rehabilitation machine, namely the leg curl and leg extension mechanism and its control architecture, the upper body exercises system, and a series of regulation mechanisms required to accommodate a wide range of users. The proposed functional design will then lead to the development of a prototype to validate the machine
On the Suspension Design of Paquitop, a Novel Service Robot for Home Assistance Applications
The general and constant ageing of the world population that has been observed in the last decade has led robotics researchers community to focus its aims to answer the ever-growing demand for health care, housing, care-giving, and social security. Among others, the researchers at Politecnico di Torino are developing a novel platform to enhance the performance offered by present-day issues, and to assess many others which were not even taken into consideration before they have been highlighted by the pandemic emergency currently in progress. This situation, in fact, made dramatically clear how important it is to have reliable non-human operators whom one can trust when the life of elderly or weak patients is endangered by the simple presence of other people. The platform, named Paquitop, features an innovative architecture conceived for omni-directional planar motion. The machine is designed for domestic, unstructured, and variously populated environments. Therefore, the mobile robot should be able to avoid or pass over small obstacles, passing through the capability to achieve specific person tracking tasks, and arriving to the need of operating with an high dynamic performance. Given its purpose, this work addresses the design of the suspension system which enables the platform to ensure a steady floor contact and adequate stability in every using condition. Different configurations of such system are then presented and compared through use-case simulations
An Estimator for the Kinematic Behaviour of a Mobile Robot Subject to Large Lateral Slip
In this paper, the effects of wheel slip compensation in trajectory planning for mobile tractor-trailer robot applications are investigated. Firstly, a kinematic model of the proposed robot architecture is marked out, then an experimental campaign is done to identify if it is possible to kinematically compensate trajectories that otherwise would be subject to large lateral slip. Due to the close connection to the experimental data, the results shown are valid only for Epi.q, the prototype that is the main object of this manuscript. Nonetheless, the base concept can be usefully applied to any mobile robot subject to large lateral slip

However, the oxidation step of the primary hydroxyl group of the glucose moiety in the presence of the N-oxyamide function appeared to be a difficult task that was nevertheless conveniently achieved for the first time by employing a chemoenzymatic laccase/TEMPO procedure. The obtained N-oxyamides exhibited a higher inhibition of proliferation of ovarian carcinoma IGROV-1 cells in serum-free medium than in complete medium, similarly to the corresponding bioactive esters. Stability and serum binding studies indicated that the observed reduced activity of the compounds in complete medium could be mainly due to a binding effect of serum proteins rather than the hydrolytic degradation of glycoglycerolipid acyl chains. Furthermore, the results of the cellular studies under serum-free conditions suggested that the N-oxyamide group could increase the antiproliferative activity of a glycoglycerolipid independently of the presence of the anionic carboxylic group. Cellular studies in other cell lines besides IGROV-1 also support a certain degree of selectivity of this series of compounds for tumor cells with Akt hyperactivation.publishersversionpublishe
Field tests of a novel solar-assisted dual source multifunctional heat pump
In this paper, we present the results of field study concerning a novel solar-assisted dual-source multifunctional heat pump, installed in a detached house in Milan. The system couples hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) panels with multifunctional and reversible heat pump. The proposed system is equipped with an “air source” evaporator and a “water source” evaporator, connected in series and operated alternatively, based on the ambient conditions and system parameters. The “air source” evaporator is an external unit; conversely, the “water source” evaporator is connected with a storage tank, fed by the PVT system. The PVT system is connected with the heat pump by two storage tanks to be used to produce domestic hot water and to be used in “water source” evaporator. Based on the operating conditions, the hot water is sent to one of the storage tank. The proposed system has been tested experimentally; the results show that the system was able to maintain high efficiency in the different seasons and was able to produce domestic hot water. It was found that the use of the “water source” evaporator was able to compensate the performance degradation of the “air source” source evaporator caused by the low ambient temperature
