    MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH: A New Method to Train Support Vector Classifier with the Selection of Model's Parameters

    The selection of model's parameters plays an important role in the application of support vector classification (SVC). The commonly used method of selecting model's parameters is the k-fold cross validation with grid search (CV). It is extremely time-consuming because it needs to train a large number of SVC models. In this paper, a new method is proposed to train SVC with the selection of model's parameters. Firstly, training SVC with the selection of model's parameters is modeled as a minimax optimization problem (MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH), in which the minimization problem is an optimization problem of finding the closest points between two normal convex hulls (L2-SVC-NCH) while the maximization problem is an optimization problem of finding the optimal model's parameters. A lower time complexity can be expected in MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH because CV is abandoned. A gradient-based algorithm is then proposed to solve MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH, in which L2-SVC-NCH is solved by a projected gradient algorithm (PGA) while the maximization problem is solved by a gradient ascent algorithm with dynamic learning rate. To demonstrate the advantages of the PGA in solving L2-SVC-NCH, we carry out a comparison of the PGA and the famous sequential minimal optimization (SMO) algorithm after a SMO algorithm and some KKT conditions for L2-SVC-NCH are provided. It is revealed that the SMO algorithm is a special case of the PGA. Thus, the PGA can provide more flexibility. The comparative experiments between MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH and the classical parameter selection models on public datasets show that MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH greatly reduces the number of models to be trained and the test accuracy is not lost to the classical models. It indicates that MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH performs better than the other models. We strongly recommend MaxMin-L2-SVC-NCH as a preferred model for SVC task

    SAMN: A Sample Attention Memory Network Combining SVM and NN in One Architecture

    Support vector machine (SVM) and neural networks (NN) have strong complementarity. SVM focuses on the inner operation among samples while NN focuses on the operation among the features within samples. Thus, it is promising and attractive to combine SVM and NN, as it may provide a more powerful function than SVM or NN alone. However, current work on combining them lacks true integration. To address this, we propose a sample attention memory network (SAMN) that effectively combines SVM and NN by incorporating sample attention module, class prototypes, and memory block to NN. SVM can be viewed as a sample attention machine. It allows us to add a sample attention module to NN to implement the main function of SVM. Class prototypes are representatives of all classes, which can be viewed as alternatives to support vectors. The memory block is used for the storage and update of class prototypes. Class prototypes and memory block effectively reduce the computational cost of sample attention and make SAMN suitable for multi-classification tasks. Extensive experiments show that SAMN achieves better classification performance than single SVM or single NN with similar parameter sizes, as well as the previous best model for combining SVM and NN.     Analysis of Microbial Communities in Three Rounds of High-temperature Daqu Using Metagenomic Technology

    Metagenomic sequencing technology was used to analyze the microbial community structures and functional composition in three rounds of Daqu. The results showed that the average assembly length of the 25 samples was 100.5 Mb, a total of 439 000 gene catalogs were detected, and 5 104 species were identified. The results of species annotation showed that Kroppenstedtia eburnea was the dominant species, and the subdominant species were multiple Bacillus species. There was no significant difference in microbial community diversity between samples from the first feeding (Xiasha) and those from the first round of fermentation, and the β-diversity of the microbial community in samples from the second feeding (Zaosha) was higher than that in samples from Xiasha and the first round of fermentation. The results of gene functional annotation showed that the most abundant genes in Daqu were related to metabolism, while the most representative genes were related to carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism. The number of glycoside hydrolase genes in Zaosha samples was largest and the activities of related enzymes were highest. The above results indicated that the microbial community structures and functional composition in the three rounds of Daqu were basically consistent, whereas there was a difference in functional performance between the Zaosha samples and the other two samples

    Npas1+ Pallidal Neurons Target Striatal Projection Neurons

    Compelling evidence demonstrates the external globus pallidus (GPe) plays a key role in processing sensorimotor information. An anatomical projection from the GPe to the dorsal striatum (dStr) has been described for decades. However, the cellular target and functional impact of this projection remain unknown. Using cell-specific transgenic mice, modern monosynaptic tracing techniques, and optogenetics-based mapping, we discovered that GPe neurons provide inhibitory inputs to direct- and indirect-pathway striatal projection neurons (SPNs). Our results indicate that the GPe input to SPNs arises primarily from Npas1- expressing neurons and is strengthened in a chronic Parkinson’s disease (PD) model. Alterations of the GPe-SPN input in a PD model argue for the critical position of this connection in regulating basal ganglia motor output, arguing that strengthening of GPe-SPN connection is maladaptive and may underlie the hypokinetic symptoms in PD

    Respiratory Syncytial Virus Exacerbates Kidney Damages in IgA Nephropathy Mice via the C5a-C5aR1 Axis Orchestrating Th17 Cell Responses

    Respiratory viral infections can directly lead to kidney damage such as IgA nephropathy (IgAN), partly due to mucosal immune system dysfunction. Although the activated C5a-C5aR1 axis results in increased Th1 and Th17 frequencies but reduced Treg frequencies in Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, how this axis affects Th cell disorders in RSV-induced IgAN exacerbation remains unknown. Here, we used a mouse model to dissect the activation of C5a-C5aR1 by RSV and the consequences on the regulation of Th1, Th17, and Treg immune responses in IgA nephropathy. RSV fusion protein was clearly deposited not only in the pulmonary interstitium but also in the glomerulus in RSV-IgAN mice, and RSV infection led to more severe pathological changes in the kidneys in IgAN mice. Blocking the C5a-C5aR1 axis resulted in a decrease in the albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and the attenuation of kidney damage in IgAN and RSV-IgAN mice might be partly attributed to the inhibition of Th cell and cytokine dysfunction. Th1, Th17 and Treg immune responses and their corelative cytokines were disrupted by RSV infection and rescued by C5aR1 inhibition. Moreover, we constructed a coculture system of human mesangial cells and CD4+ T cells and found that RSV infection might lead to CD4+ T cell production via human mesangial cells-enhanced CD4+ T cell proliferation, consequently increasing IL-17 levels. These pathological behaviors were augmented by C5a stimulation and decreased by C5aR1 inhibition. Thus, C5aR1 inhibition alters both kidney damage and Th1, Th17, and Treg cell dysfunction in RSV-induced IgAN exacerbation and locally regulates HMC antigen presentation function in the kidney. Taken together, our data offer profound evidence that blocking the C5a-C5aR1 axis might be a potential therapy for RSV-induced IgAN

    The Ventral Intermediate Nucleus Differently Modulates Subtype-Related Networks in Parkinson’s Disease

    Background: Posture instability gait difficulty-dominant (PIGD) and tremor-dominant (TD) are two subtypes of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The thalamus is involved in the neural circuits of both subtypes. However, which subregion of the thalamus has an influence on the PD subtypes remains unclear.Objective: To explore the core subregion of the thalamus showing a significant influence on the PD subtypes and its directional interaction between the PD subtypes.Methods: A total of 79 PD patients (43 TD and 36 PIGD) and 31 normal controls (NC) were enrolled, and the gray matter volume and perfusion characteristics in the thalamus were compared between the three groups. The subregion of the thalamus with significantly different perfusion and volume among three groups was used as the seed of a Granger causality analysis (GCA) to compare the causal connectivity between different subtypes.Results: Perfusion with an increased gradient among the three groups (TD > PIGD > NC) in the bilateral ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) was observed, which was positively correlated with the clinical tremor scores. The GCA revealed that TD patients had enhanced causal connectivity from the bilateral Vim to the bilateral paracentral gyrus, M1 and the cerebellum compared with the NC group, while the PIGD subtype revealed an increased causal connectivity from the bilateral Vim to the bilateral premotor cortex (preM) and putamen. Additionally, there were positive correlations between the tremor scores and a causal connectivity from the Vim to the cerebellum. The connectivity from the right Vim to the right preM and the right putamen was positively correlated with the PIGD scores.Conclusion: This multilevel analysis showed that the Vim had a significant influence on the PD subtypes and that it differentially mediated the TD and PIGD-related causal connectivity pattern in PD

    Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Nonlinear Optical Properties of a New Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Carbonate RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8

    A new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8, has been synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The crystal structure is established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8 crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with space group P63mc (No. 186). The structure of RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8 can be described as the adjacent infinite [CaCO3]∞ layers lying in the a-b plane bridged through standing-on-edge [CO3] groups by sharing O atoms (two-fold coordinated) to build a framework with four types of tunnels running through the b-axis. The Rb, Na, and [Na0.67Ca0.33] atoms reside in these tunnels, respectively. The measurement of second harmonic generation (SHG) indicated that RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8 is a phase-matchable material, which had SHG responses of approximately 1×KH2PO4 (KDP). Meanwhile, the results from the UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy study of the powder samples indicated that the UV cut-off edges of RbNa5Ca5(CO3)8 is about 203 nm

    The role of intelligence in posttraumatic stress disorder: does it vary by trauma severity?

    Only a small minority of trauma victims develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suggesting that victims vary in their predispositions to the PTSD response to stressors. It is assumed that the role of predispositions in PTSD varies by trauma severity: when stressors are less severe, predispositions play a bigger role. In this study, we test whether the role of intelligence in PTSD varies by trauma severity. Specifically, does low intelligence plays a bigger part among victims of lower magnitude stressors than among victims of extreme stressors?Data come from a longitudinal study of randomly selected sample in Southeast Michigan (n = 713). IQ was measured at age 6. PTSD was measured at age 17, using the NIMH-DIS for DSM-IV. Stressors were classified as extreme if they involved assaultive violence (e.g. rape, sexual assault, threatened with a weapon); other stressors in the list (e.g. disaster, accidents) were classified as lower magnitude. Assaultive violence victims had experienced assaultive violence plus other event types or only assaultive violence. Victims of other stressors were participants who had never experienced assaultive violence. We compared the influence of age 6 IQ on PTSD among persons exposed to assaultive violence vs. other stressors, using multinomial logistic regression.Relative risk ratio (RRR) for PTSD associated with a one point drop in age 6 IQ among victims of assaultive violence was 1.04 (95% CI 1.01, 1.06); among victims of other stressors, it was 1.03 (95% CI 0.99, 1.06). A comparison of the two RRRs indicates no significant difference between the two estimates (p = 0.652). IQ does not play a bigger role in PTSD among victims of other stressors than it does among victims of assaultive violence.Lower IQ exerts an adverse PTSD effect on trauma victims, with no evidence of variability by the severity of trauma they have experienced

    Na4Yb(CO3)3F: A New UV Nonlinear Optical Material with a Large Second Harmonic Generation Response

    A new nonlinear optical crystals fluoride carbonate, Na4Yb(CO3)3F, has been synthesized by mild hydrothermal method. The Na4Yb(CO3)3F crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc (no. 9) with the lattice parameters a = 8.018(3), b = 15.929(5), c = 13.950(5) Å and β = 101.425(6)°. The compound Na4Yb(CO3)3F has a high density of [CO3] groups. The structure can be described as one-dimensional [Na5Yb(CO3)2F2] chains connected by [CO3] groups, forming an intricate three-dimensional (3D) framework. Other Na+ and Yb3+ cations are located in the cavities of 3D network. The powder second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement shows that Na4Yb(CO3)3F features a large SHG response, about 4.3 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), and is a phase-matchable material. In addition, its UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectral data indicate that Na4Yb(CO3)3F has a large optical gap about 4.72 eV, which corresponds to the UV cut-off edge of 263 nm

    Traditional Chinese medicine for acute mountain sickness prevention: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for preventing acute mountain sickness (AMS). Methods: We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which evalueded the effect of TCM for preventing AMS, compared with a placebo, no treatment or acetazolamide. The literature was searched in 6 major databases. RevMan 5.4 software was used for the meta-analysis. The relative risk for discrete variables and the mean difference for continuous variables with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to express the effect size. The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk assessment tool 2.0 (RoB 2.0), and the evidence certainty was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment and the Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: Twenty RCTs involving 3015 participants and 16 TCM patent drugs were included. The overall risk of bias in the majority of studies (15/20) was of some concerns. In terms of the AMS incidence, Rhodiola rosea (R. rosea, Hong Jing Tian) and Ginkgo biloba (G. biloba, Yin Xing Ye) were equivalent to the placebo/no treatment [RR (95% CI): 0.66 (0.43–1.01), 0.82 (0.63–1.06), respectively]. The AMS incidence in the G. biloba group was higher than that in the acetazolamide group [RR (95% CI): 2.92 (1.69–5.06)]. In terms of improving the AMS symptom score on days 1 and 3 in the plateau, R. rosea and G. biloba were superior to the placebo or no treatment [MD (95% CI): -0.98 (-1.71, -0.25), -2.05 (-3.14, -0.95), respectively]. The other 14 Chinese patent medicines were evaluated in a single trial, and the majority of the results were negative. The subgroup analysis showed that the effect of R. rosea was related to the intervention time, way of ascending, and altitude. Conclusion: R. rosea and G. biloba were effective in improving AMS symptoms but had no effect in reducing the AMS incidence. There was insufficient evidence to support the use of other TCM patent drugs to prevent AMS. More randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials are warranted to evaluate and screen effective Chinese patent medicines for AMS prevention
