    El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar la influencia de la violencia familiar en la autoestima de los adolescentes de 4º año de secundaria de la sección “A” y “C” de la Institución Educativa Gran Unidad Escolar Ricardo Palma – Surquillo –Lima – 2016. Siendo una investigación descriptiva transversal donde se trabajó con una muestra de 60 adolescentes, para el recojo de la información se utilizó un cuestionario tipo Likert, cuya validez de instrumento se realizó mediante la prueba de concordancia del juicio de expertos obteniendo un valor de 0,813; la confiabilidad se examinó a través del alfa de Cronbach con un valor de 0,931, la prueba de hipótesis se comprobó estadísticamente mediante la R de Pearson con un valor de 0,909 y con un nivel de significancia de valor p<0,05. Se concluye que hay una existencia de influencia significativa e inversa entre ambas variables (violencia familiar y autoestima) en los adolescentes; es decir, a mayores niveles de violencia familiar encontramos bajos niveles de autoestima y viceversa; significando que para la autoestima de los adolescentes se necesita el apoyo y protección de la familia, que se les brinde seguridad física y emocional, con espacios donde puedan desarrollarse y desenvolverse de acuerdo a su edad

    United Nations Convention Documents in Light of Feminist Theory

    This article proposes that language identifying human rights of women in U.N. Conference documents has its origin in several different feminist theories. An understanding of these theories can help to clarify meaning, resolve inconsistencies, and predict the future direction of language in U.N. documents. Part I examines three prominent feminist theories and their relation to international law. Part II examines the history of women\u27s rights in U.N. documents and examines the influence of feminist theory on the document language. Using the Women and the Economy section of the Fourth World Conference on Women, Platform for Action (Platform for Action), Part III shows how feminist theories can aid observers in understanding the documents and in making predictions about future trends. Comparison of the Platform for Action with a recent U.N. document titled Further Actions and Initiatives to Implement the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action supports predictions made based on the use of certain theories. Although language in U.N. documents still shows the influence of each of the three major theories, this article concludes that Dominance Feminist theory has the greatest impact

    Age and Prostate-Specific Antigen Level Prior to Diagnosis Predict Risk of Death from Prostate Cancer.

    A single early prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level has been correlated with a higher likelihood of prostate cancer diagnosis and death in younger men. PSA testing in older men has been considered of limited utility. We evaluated prostate cancer death in relation to age and PSA level immediately prior to prostate cancer diagnosis. Using the Veterans Affairs database, we identified 230,081 men aged 50-89 years diagnosed with prostate cancer and at least one prior PSA test between 1999 and 2009. Prostate cancer-specific death over time was calculated for patients stratified by age group (e.g., 50-59 years, through 80-89 years) and PSA range at diagnosis (10 ranges) using Kaplan-Meier methods. Risk of 10-year prostate cancer mortality across age and PSA was compared using log-rank tests with a Bonferroni adjustment for multiple testing. 10.5% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer died of cancer during the 10-year study period (mean follow-up = 3.7 years). Higher PSA values prior to diagnosis predict a higher risk of death in all age groups (p &lt; 0.0001). Within the same PSA range, older age groups are at increased risk for death from prostate cancer (p &lt; 0.0001). For PSA of 7-10 ng/mL, cancer-specific death, 10 years after diagnosis, increased from 7% for age 50-59 years to 51% for age 80-89 years. Men older than 70 years are more likely to die of prostate cancer at any PSA level than younger men, suggesting prostate cancer remains a significant problem among older men (even those aged 80+) and deserves additional study

    The Absolute Magnitude of RRc Variables From Statistical Parallax

    We present the first definitive measurement of the absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae c-type variable stars (RRc) determined purely from statistical parallax. We use a sample of 247 RRc selected from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) for which high-quality light curves, photometry and proper motions are available. We obtain high-resolution echelle spectra for these objects to determine radial velocities and abundances as part of the Carnegie RR Lyrae Survey (CARRS). We find that M_(V,RRc) = 0.52 +/- 0.11 at a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.59. This is to be compared with previous estimates for RRab stars (M_(V,RRab) = 0.75 +/- 0.13 and the only direct measurement of an RRc absolute magnitude (RZ Cephei, M_(V, RRc) = 0.27 +/- 0.17). We find the bulk velocity of the halo to be (W_pi, W_theta, W_z) = (10.9,34.9,7.2) km/s in the radial, rotational and vertical directions with dispersions (sigma_(W_pi), sigma_(W_theta), sigma_(W_z)) = (154.7, 103.6, 93.8) km/s. For the disk, we find (W_pi, W_theta, W_z) = (8.5, 213.2, -22.1) km/s with dispersions (sigma_(W_pi), sigma_(W_theta), sigma_(W_z)) = (63.5, 49.6, 51.3) km/s.     Inheritance of Evolved Glyphosate Resistance in a North Carolina Palmer Amaranth ( Amaranthus palmeri

    Inheritance of glyphosate resistance in a Palmer amaranth biotype from North Carolina was studied. Glyphosate rates for 50% survival of glyphosate-resistant (GR) and glyphosate-susceptible (GS) biotypes were 1288 and 58 g ha−1, respectively. These values for F1 progenies obtained from reciprocal crosses (GR×GS and GS×GR were 794 and 501 g ha−1, respectively. Dose response of F1 progenies indicated that resistance was not fully dominant over susceptibility. Lack of significant differences between dose responses for reciprocal F1 families suggested that genetic control of glyphosate resistance was governed by nuclear genome. Analysis of F1 backcross (BC1F1) families showed that 10 and 8 BC1F1 families out of 15 fitted monogenic inheritance at 2000 and 3000 g ha−1 glyphosate, respectively. These results indicate that inheritance of glyphosate resistance in this biotype is incompletely dominant, nuclear inherited, and might not be consistent with a single gene mechanism of inheritance. Relative 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) copy number varied from 22 to 63 across 10 individuals from resistant biotype. This suggested that variable EPSPS copy number in the parents might be influential in determining if inheritance of glyphosate resistance is monogenic or polygenic in this biotype

    Synthetic auxin herbicides : finding the lock and key to weed resistance

    Synthetic auxin herbicides are designed to mimic indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), an integral plant hormone affecting cell growth, development, and tropism. In this review, we explore target site genes in the auxin signaling pathway including SCFTIR1/AFB, Aux/IAA, and ARFs that are confirmed or proposed mechanisms for weed resistance to synthetic auxin herbicides. Resistance to auxin herbicides by metabolism, either by enhanced cytochrome P450 detoxification or by loss of pro-herbicide activation, is a major non-target-site resistance pathway. We speculate about potential fitness costs of resistance due to effects of resistance-conferring mutations, provide insight into the role of polyploidy in synthetic auxin resistance evolution, and address the genetic resources available for weeds. This knowledge will be the key to unlock the long-standing questions as to which components of the auxin signaling pathway are most likely to have a role in resistance evolution. We propose that an ambitious research effort into synthetic auxin herbicide/target site interactions is needed to 1) explain why some synthetic auxin chemical families have activity on certain dicot plant families but not others and 2) fully elucidate target-site cross-resistance patterns among synthetic auxin chemical families to guide best practices for resistance management
