Over the past 30 years, the field of genetic engineering has grown in a spectacular manner. The methods involved in genetic engineering which were earlier considered cumbersome and involved sophisticated instrumentation have now became a common drill within the laboratories throughout the world. This rising technology is now involved in almost every aspect of biological research. Its application includes medical diagnosis, paternity disputes, forensic analysis, genome sequencing, etc. In the recent years, this technology has attained a large-scale attention, and now the commercial products developed using genetic engineering are known worldwide. The technique of genetic engineering is solely based on genetic information, which is encoded by the DNA in the form of genes. Through genetic engineering the genes can be introduced or manipulated within the host to develop products of value and importance, for treatment of genetic disorders, and to achieve other goals. The present chapter explains the techniques involved in genetic engineering and rDNA technology and its importance in revolutionizing different fields. The objective of this chapter is to highlight the basic principle and methodology involved in genetic engineering and its role in human welfare

Divide and the Rules: A Study on the Colonial Inheritance of Digital Games

    No full text
The current article is an exploration into the colonial inheritance of digital games. It argues that the pervasiveness and persistence of discursive practices, like imagining the play world as the otherworld and valuing the play world for its pedagogical potential, are tied to the colonial logic of exclusion, extraction and exploitation. Perpetuation of these colonial conceptualizations in the discourse surrounding digital games makes attempts at decolonization ineffective. The essay seeks to explicate the colonial in these discursive formulations

The 2016 Model Indian Bilateral Investment Treaty: A Critical Deconstruction

In the global backdrop of backlash against bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), this paper critically studies India’s new Model BIT, adopted in 2016 as a response to increasing number of ISDS claims brought against India. This paper studies the Indian Model BIT, which heralds a new era of India’s BIT practice, from the standpoint of two key objectives that the Indian government claims the Model BIT achieves. First, the claim that the purpose of the Model BIT is to balance investment protection with host state’s right to regulate. Second, the claim that the Model BIT aims to make the treaty provisions more precise so as to minimize arbitral discretion. This paper shows that for most of the key provisions given in the Model BIT, contrary to the Indian government’s claim, India has not been able to strike a balance between investment protection and host State’s right to regulate. For most of the provisions, the scale tilts in favor of the host state. This paper also shows that many provisions in the Indian Model BIT, contrary to the government’s claim, are vague and imprecise and thus, continue to grant significant discretion to ISDS arbitral tribunals to determine the actual import of these provisions
