    In this paper, we discuss the experimental technique for real-time measurement of the lifetimes of the collision complex of bimolecular reactions. An application to the atom–molecule Br+I_2 reaction at two collision energies is made. Building on our earlier Communication [J. Chem. Phys. 95, 7763 (1991)], we report on the observed transients and lifetimes for the collision complex, the nature of the transition state, and the dynamics near threshold. Classical trajectory calculations provide a framework for deriving the global nature of the reactive potential energy surface, and for discussing the real-time, scattering, and asymptotic (product-state distribution) aspects of the dynamics. These experimental and theoretical results are compared with the extensive array of kinetic, crossed beam, and theoretical studies found in the literature for halogen radical–halogen molecule exchange reactions

    Providing Web Surfers With Useful Information About Plants via PlantSage

    The World Wide Web has opened substantial avenues for research into accessing and disseminating vast amounts of information to millions of users all over the world. As a result, it is now very common for people at all levels of computer literacy to “surf the net” in search of information. However, finding useful information can be a laborious and tedious task, especially for those unfamiliar with the Web. Our goal is to improve both the usefulness and the ease of web-based information gathering. In particular, we place a special emphasis on horticulture-based information. In the PlantSage project, we provide access to three different sources of information: a local database, a search on selected “partner” sites, and a search on the entire web that not only returns names and URLs of relevant sites but also collates and uniformly formats potentially useful information. This paper will describe each of these processes and our plans for enhancing them

    Lunar horizon glow and the Clementine mission

    The Clementine spacecraft is to be launched into Earth orbit in late January for subsequent insertion into lunar orbit in late February, 1994. There, its primary mission is to produce -- over a period of about two months -- a new photographic map of the entire surface of the Moon; this will be done, in a variety of wavelengths and spatial resolutions, in a manner greatly superior to that previously accomplished for the whole Moon. It will then go on to fly by and photograph the asteroid Geographos. A secondary goal that has been accepted for this mission is to take a series of photographs designed to capture images of, and determine the brightness and extent of, the Lunar Horizon Glow (LHG). One form of LHG is caused by the solar stimulation of emission from Na and K atoms in the lunar exosphere. The scale height of this exosphere is of the order of 100 km. There are also brighter LHG components, with much smaller scale heights, that appear to be caused by scattered off of an exospheric lunar dust cloud

    Sodium and potassium in the lunar atmosphere

    The discovery that sodium and potassium vapor can be observed in the lunar atmosphere using ground-based telescopes has opened up a field of investigation that was closed after the last Apollo mission to the Moon. Sodium has been detected at altitudes up to 1500 km above the surface. This implies a high effective temperature for sodium, of the order of 1000 K. However, there is some evidence for two populations of sodium and potassium, one at temperatures corresponding to the surface, and another corresponding to high temperatures. The sources for the lunar atmosphere are not understood. Meteoric bombardment of the surface, solar wind sputtering of the surface, and photo-sputtering of the surface have all been suggested as possible sources for the lunar atmosphere. One of the objectives of the current research is to test different hypotheses by measurements of the atmosphere under different conditions of solar illumination and shielding from the solar wind by the Earth

    Stokes imaging, Doppler mapping and Roche tomography of the AM Her system V834 Cen

    We report on new simultaneous phase resolved spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the polar (AM Herculis star) V834 Cen during a high state of accretion. Strong emission lines and high levels of variable circular and linear polarization are observed over the orbital period. The polarization data is modelled using the Stokes imaging technique of Potter et al. The spectroscopic emission lines are investigated using the Doppler tomography technique of Marsh and Horne and the Roche tomography technique of Dhillon and Watson. Up to now all three techniques have been used separately to investigate the geometry and accretion dynamics in Cataclysmic Variables. For the first time, we apply all three techniques to simultaneous data for a single system. This allows us to compare and test each of the techniques against each other and hence derive a better understanding of the geometry, dynamics and system parameters of V834 Cen.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Rabi oscillations under ultrafast excitation of graphene

    We study coherent nonlinear dynamics of carriers under ultrafast interband excitation of an intrinsic graphene. The Rabi oscillations of response appear with increasing of pumping intensity. The photoexcited distribution is calculated versus time and energy taking into account the effects of energy relaxation and dephasing. Spectral and temporal dependencies of the response on a probe radiation (transmission and reflection coefficients) are considered for different pumping intensities and the Rabi oscillations versus time and intensity are analyzed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Random Matrix Theory Analysis of Cross Correlations in Financial Markets

    We confirm universal behaviors such as eigenvalue distribution and spacings predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) for the cross correlation matrix of the daily stock prices of Tokyo Stock Exchange from 1993 to 2001, which have been reported for New York Stock Exchange in previous studies. It is shown that the random part of the eigenvalue distribution of the cross correlation matrix is stable even when deterministic correlations are present. Some deviations in the small eigenvalue statistics outside the bounds of the universality class of RMT are not completely explained with the deterministic correlations as proposed in previous studies. We study the effect of randomness on deterministic correlations and find that randomness causes a repulsion between deterministic eigenvalues and the random eigenvalues. This is interpreted as a reminiscent of ``level repulsion'' in RMT and explains some deviations from the previous studies observed in the market data. We also study correlated groups of issues in these markets and propose a refined method to identify correlated groups based on RMT. Some characteristic differences between properties of Tokyo Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange are found.Comment: RevTex, 17 pages, 8 figure
