    Eliminating spurious velocities in the free energy lattice Boltzmann method

    Spurious velocities are unphysical currents that appear close to curved interfaces in diffuse interface methods. We analyse the causes of these spurious velocities in the free energy lattice Boltzmann algorithm. By making a suitable choice of the equilibrium distribution, and by finding the best way to numerically calculate derivatives, we show that these velocities may be decreased by an order of magnitude compared to previous models. Furthermore, we propose a momentum conserving forcing method that reduces spurious velocities by another factor of ~5. In three dimensions we find that 19 velocity vectors is the minimum number necessary.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    X-ray and Optical Study of Low Core Density Globular Clusters NGC6144 and E3

    We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope observation of two low core density globular clusters, NGC6144 and E3. By comparing the number of X-ray sources inside the half-mass radius to those outside, we found 6 X-ray sources within the half-mass radius of NGC6144, among which 4 are expected to be background sources; 3 X-ray sources are also found within the half-mass radius of E3, of which 3 is expected to be background source. Therefore, we cannot exclude that all our sources are background sources. However, combining the results from X-ray and optical observations, we found that 1-2 sources in NGC6144 and 1 source in E3 are likely to be cataclysmic variables and that 1 source in NGC6144 is an active binary, based on the X-ray and optical properties. The number of faint X-ray sources in NGC6144 and E3 found with Chandra and HST is higher than a prediction based on collision frequency, but is closer to that based on mass. Our observations strongly suggest that the compact binary systems in NGC6144 and E3 are primordial in origin.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Different kinds of long-term variability from Cygnus X-1

    We present a study of the long-term variability of Cyg X-1 using data from the RXTE/ASM and the RXTE/PCA during the time between the two soft states of 1996 and 2001/2002. This period has been characterized by many short ASM flaring episodes which we have identified as "failed state transitions". The 150 d period which has been seen before and shortly after the 1996 soft state is not obviously present in the ASM rate during most of this time. Applying selection criteria from our pointed RXTE/PCA observations to exclude the flaring episodes we show that the 150 d period can indeed still be significantly detected in the hard state. Furthermore, while the ~420 d timescale associated with the flaring is reduced in the selected hard state count rate, it is still pronounced in the temporal evolution of the corresponding hardness ratios.     Discovery of a 3.6-hr Eclipsing Luminous X-Ray Binary in the Galaxy NGC 4214

    We report the discovery of an eclipsing X-ray binary with a 3.62-hr period within 24" of the center of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. The orbital period places interesting constraints on the nature of the binary, and allows for a few very different interpretations. The most likely possibility is that the source lies within NGC 4214 and has an X-ray luminosity of up to 7 e38 ergs/s. In this case the binary may well be comprised of a naked He-burning donor star with a neutron-star accretor, though a stellar-mass black-hole accretor cannot be completely excluded. There is no obvious evidence for a strong stellar wind in the X-ray orbital light curve that would be expected from a massive He star; thus, the mass of the He star should be <3-4 solar masses. If correct, this would represent a new class of very luminous X-ray binary -- perhaps related to Cyg X-3. Other less likely possibilities include a conventional low-mass X-ray binary that somehow manages to produce such a high X-ray luminosity and is apparently persistent over an interval of years; or a foreground AM Her binary of much lower luminosity that fortuitously lies in the direction of NGC 4214. Any model for this system must accommodate the lack of an optical counterpart down to a limiting magnitude of 22.6 in the visible.Comment: 7 pages, ApJ accepted versio

    HST/NICMOS Observations of Fast Infrared Flickering in the Microquasar GRS 1915+105

    We report infrared observations of the microquasar GRS 1915+105 using the NICMOS instrument of the Hubble Space Telescope during 9 visits in April-June 2003. During epochs of high X-ray/radio activity near the beginning and end of this period, we find that the 1.871.87 \um infrared flux is generally low (2\sim 2 mJy) and relatively steady. However, during the X-ray/radio ``plateau'' state between these epochs, we find that the infrared flux is significantly higher (46\sim 4-6 mJy), and strongly variable. In particular, we find events with amplitudes 2030\sim 20-30% occurring on timescales of 1020\sim 10-20s (e-folding timescales of 30\sim 30s). These flickering timescales are several times faster than any previously-observed infrared variability in GRS 1915+105 and the IR variations exceed corresponding X-ray variations at the same (8s\sim 8s) timescale. These results suggest an entirely new type of infrared variability from this object. Based on the properties of this flickering, we conclude that it arises in the plateau-state jet outflow itself, at a distance <2.5<2.5 AU from the accretion disk.     Dynamical Formation of Millisecond Pulsars in Globular Clusters

    The cumulative luminosity distribution functions (CLFs) of radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in globular clusters (GCs) and in the Galactic field at a frequency of 1.4 GHz have been examined. Assuming a functional form, NLqN \propto L^q where NN is the number of MSPs and LL is the luminosity at 1.4 GHz, it is found that the CLFs significantly differ with a steeper slope, q=0.83±0.05q=-0.83 \pm 0.05, in GCs than in the Galactic field (q=0.48±0.04q=-0.48 \pm 0.04), suggesting a different formation or evolutionary history of MSPs in these two regions of the Galaxy. To probe the production mechanism of MSPs in clusters, a search of the possible relationships between the MSP population and cluster properties was carried out. The results of an investigation of 9 GCs indicate positive correlations between the MSP population and the stellar encounter rate and metallicity. This provides additional evidence suggesting that stellar dynamical interactions are important in the formation of the MSP population in GCs.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Ap

    Student motivations for studying online: A qualitative study

    The availability of online courses has continued to grow over recent years with more students now turning to online offerings. The flexibility offered through online learning is attractive to prospective students with some of the benefits including reduced costs, and the potential to increase and diversify the student body. Online courses provide the advantage of reaching those who may be ‘too busy’ for traditional study, and offer flexibility through anywhere, anytime access. While these benefits may attract prospective learners to the online environment there remains little empirical evidence for the reasons students actually make the decision to study online over more traditional means. Here, it is important to understand students’ motivations for choosing an online course. Without this information universities cannot assess if their programs are effectively designed to meet students’ expectations, or that students are sufficiently informed and prepared for instruction and learning in the online environment. As part of a PhD, research is currently underway investigating what students expect when commencing an online course at Edith Cowan University (ECU).     Spectral state dependence of the 0.4-2 MeV polarized emission in Cygnus X-1 seen with INTEGRAL/IBIS, and links with the AMI radio data

    Polarization of the >~400 keV hard tail of the microquasar Cygnus X-1 has been independently reported by INTEGRAL/IBIS, and INTEGRAL/SPI and interpreted as emission from a compact jet. These conclusions were, however, based on the accumulation of all INTEGRAL data regardless of the spectral state. We utilize additional INTEGRAL exposure accumulated until December 2012, and include the AMI/Ryle (15 GHz) radio data in our study. We separate the observations into hard, soft, and intermediate/transitional states and detect radio emission from a compact jet in hard and intermediate states, but not in the soft. The 10-400 keV INTEGRAL (JEM-X and IBIS) state resolved spectra are well modeled with thermal Comptonization and reflection components. We detect a hard tail in the 0.4-2 MeV range for the hard state only. We extract the state dependent polarigrams of Cyg X-1, which all are compatible to no or undetectable level of polarization except in 400-2000 keV range in the hard state where the polarization fraction is 75±\pm32 % and the polarization angle 40.0 +-14 deg. An upper limit on the 0.4-2 MeV soft state polarization fraction is 70%. Due to the short exposure, we obtain no meaningful constraint for the intermediate state. The likely detection of a >400 keV polarized tail in the hard state, together with the simultaneous presence of a radio jet, reinforce the notion of a compact jet origin of the 400 keV emission.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
