The Open Door, Dollar Diplomacy, and the Self-Strengthening Movement: The Birth of American Idealist Imperialism in China, 1890 - 1912

American Foreign Policy at the outset of the Twentieth century evolved from a realist to an idealist position as the United States transitioned to an imperial power. This ideal framework was formed in the crucible of China during the Spheres of Influence and the Open Door. The US had to play delicate game of helping China to maintain their territorial, and administrative integrity while at the same time protecting their newly acquired overseas interests against more established imperial actors. While there were many missteps, and failures during this transition perhaps the most the important result was the change toward the approach of US foreign policy. Not only did the United States have to balance realist geo-political goals, but it had to define what an imperial United States looked like. In a sense the United States was starting from scratch, processing to a completely different game and in order to be successful it had evolve

Wellness Program Effect on the Health Parameters of Female Employees Aged 25 to 60 Years of Age Targeting Physical Activity and Nutrition Therapy.

The purpose of the study was to determine if the health parameters of female employees would improve, as measured in the posttest data, following the completion of a 12-week employee wellness program. The participants included 17 female employees from the Carter County Health Department located in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The principle investigator assessed the changes in the pretests and posttests and analyzed the data using SPSS. The results showed on average an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption and in the number of days exercised per week as well as improved diastolic blood pressure and triglyceride levels. The employees who experienced weight loss, consumed at least four servings of fruit and vegetables per day, and exercised at least 30 minutes five or more days per week had the greatest improvement in health parameters

An Examination of Accountancy Through Case Studies

This thesis consists major accounting topics that are encompassed in the profession of accounting. Thanks to this thesis, I can say that I have a much more thorough understanding of the constantly evolving environment that is accounting. The University of Mississippi allows members of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College to write the thesis as part of a class titled Accountancy 420, which is taught by Dr. Victoria Dickinson

I plan to make sculpture using modules to build monolithic structures. The sculptures will explore equilibrium as it relates to an interaction and balance between elements. Weight, both visual and physical, will be a key focus of each piece. The sculptures incorporate gravity and mass in a way that exaggerates or defies the weight of the pieces. The formal strategy of breaking symmetry is employed to develop sculptures that incorporate gravity and mass and express visual movement in opposition to predictable mathematical sequencing. Line is used as a sculptural means to explore form. It has been used in a way that highlights the expressive quality of a structured system. Empedocles stated that equilibrium is the balance of right (correct) proportions. It is the generally proportional relationship (in that) health means a particular balance between...components (Mainzer 52). This exhibition seeks to explore existing structures, orders, and balances within the scientific world through the means of homeostasis. Homeostasis (specifically an open system, as it interacts with the outside environment) is the maintenance of metabolic equilibrium within an organism by a tendancy to compensate for disrupting changes. (It is) a universal tendency in all living matter to maintain constancy in the face of internal and external pressures (Howell, 54). Homeostasis is the process of maintaining balance within a natural system. It suggests movement and change without connoting upheaval and disorder; it is a regulation of the system\u27s inner workings

Bolide impact effects on the West Florida Platform, Gulf of Mexico: end Cretaceous and late Eocene

Bolide impact effects on the West Florida Platform, Gulf of Mexico: end Cretaceous and late Eocene. Geosphere, 18(3), (2022): 1077–1103, https://doi.org/10.1130/GES02472.1.This study documents seismic reflection evidence that two different bolide impacts significantly disrupted stratigraphic and depositional processes on the West Florida Platform (Gulf of Mexico). The first impact terminated the Late Cretaceous Epoch (Chicxulub impact, Mexico; ca. 66 Ma; end-Maastrichtian age). The second took place in the late Eocene (Chesapeake Bay impact, Virginia, USA, portion of the Chesapeake Bay; ca. 35 Ma; Priabonian age). Both impacts produced far-reaching seismic shaking and ground roll followed by an impact-generated tsunami, the effects of which are evident in the seismostratigraphic record. The Chicxulub seismic shaking caused collapse and shoreward retreat of the Florida Escarpment and widely disrupted (faulting, folding, slumping) normal flat-lying shelf beds. The associated tsunami currents redistributed these shelf deposits and mixed them together with collapse debris from the escarpment to form a thick wedge of sediments along the base of the escarpment. The Chesapeake Bay impact created a mounded sedimentary deposit near the outer edge of the late Eocene ramp slope. This deposit also has a bipartite origin. A lower layer is marked by en echelon faulting created in situ by seismic shaking, whereas an upper layer represents sediments redistributed from the late Eocene shelf and upper ramp slope by tsunami-driven bottom currents (debris flows, contour currents, slumps). This is the first report of seismic effects from the Chesapeake Bay impact in the Gulf of Mexico. These results further demonstrate that large-scale marine bolide impacts have widespread effects on the stratigraphic and depositional record of Earth.I am grateful to the following persons for their assistance in this research: Matt Arsenault for help attaining seismic data; T.J. Mind Change as Related to Study Abroad: Students\u27 Perceptions about Changes in Their Religious Faith at the Latin American Studies Program

As the field of study abroad grows and diversifies, scholars call for more research on how the components of such programming impact students. In response to such calls, this study explored how alumni of the Latin American Studies Program (LASP) perceived specific study abroad components to influence changes in their religious faith. LASP alumni completed an anonymous, qualitative survey that invited them to indicate whether studying abroad influenced a change in their religious faith, describe this change and its consequent actions, and identify LASP components that most influenced this change. The survey generated 430 responses, which represent 24% of LASP\u27s alumni population. Results indicated that 89% of respondents perceived that studying abroad influenced a change in their religious faith. Respondents\u27 descriptions of this change revealed six themes--increased awareness of culture\u27s influence on religious faith, new embrace of doubt, more inclusive religious faith, greater emphasis on social justice, left Christianity, and solidified existing Christian faith. Respondents\u27 descriptions of the actions that emerged from these changes illustrated five themes--justice-centered vocation, creating sustainable economies, transforming communities, family decisions, and personal development. Respondents identified a blend of components that drove this change, which was characterized by formal learning experiences (lectures, readings, assignments) that were brought to life by reflective engagement of the Latin American context (relationships with host families, study trips, discussion groups). The results contribute to a growing body of research that identifies intercultural experience as a driver of religious change. Furthermore, the findings encourage educational leaders to prioritize study abroad programs that achieve integration between formal learning experiences and direct engagement of the host context

The Act allows officers, directors, committee members, and employees of an insurance company to engage in transactions with the insurance company if a written request is given to the Insurance Commissioner’s office and the request is not denied. The Act also changes the law relating to a corporation’s insurable interests. If a corporation is merged, sold, or otherwise becomes part of another corporation, the new corporation may retain the former corporation’s insurable interests
