This report summarizes findings from first year implementation efforts of the Georgia Department of Human Resources' Family Support Demonstration Project. The goal of the project was to reduce child abuse and neglect and improve child health by providing support to Georgia's families with infants and young children at highest risk for child maltreatment

Labor union communication : effect of labor media on local union vote choice

Framing theory posits the idea that media frames a particular issue, and provides a focus or precedence of that frame to the exclusion of other information. Framing of a candidate or issue may lead voters to have a particular point of view about a candidate or issue based on their media diet (i.e., channel repertoire). The present study investigated the effects of exposure to labor union media on labor union members' evaluation of the gubernatorial candidates in the 2014 State of Illinois election. The author conducted a cross-sectional survey of 201 active and retired labor union members in the State of Illinois recruited from a nonrandom, purposive, network sample. Gender, race, income, party identification, party ideology, and religiosity were all controlled. Results indicated exposure to labor union media, and awareness of the labor union endorsement, but not trust in labor media, predicted a negative evaluation of the Republican candidate (Bruce Rauner). Trust in labor union, but not exposure to labor union media, nor awareness of the labor union endorsement, predicted a favorable evaluation of the union-endorsed candidate (Pat Quinn). Awareness of the labor union endorsement, but not exposure to labor media, predicted a negative evaluation of right-to-work and anti-union laws. Channel repertoire indicated television, followed by newspapers (most trusted medium), radio, and the Internet were most used for political information, but the national labor union website garnered the most trust as a channel

Factors that influence women\u27s disclosures of substance use during pregnancy : a qualitative study of ten midwives and ten pregnant women

The present study was designed to examine the factors that motivate or act as barriers to disclosure of substance use by pregnant women. Participants included 10 midwives and 10 pregnant women who attended two ante-natal clinics at an Australian maternity hospital. One clinic specialized in women who were substance users and one clinic was specifically for young women (under 19 years of age). Midwives and pregnant women were interviewed in-depth about disclosure of substance use. Interview transcripts were analyzed, and the results revealed six main themes: practice style, assessment of substance use, practice environment and privacy, child protection issues, health of the baby, and continuity of care. The findings are discussed in relation to recommendations for best practice in midwifery care when working with pregnant women who use substances.<br /

The Chinese zombie firm: dilemma and resolution

    Get PDF
The problems of over-capacity of zombie firms in China have attracted much attention. However, little is known theoretically, and even less empirically, about the boundaries and causes of zombie enterprises. This article extends a model to identify the characteristics of zombie firms in consideration of supply-side structural reform in China. We focus on the cause of zombie firms under the background of the ‘de-capacity’ strategy in China. Using a sample of Chinese listed companies over the period 2006–2018, we find that the proportion of zombie firms in the manufacturing industry declined significantly due to expansionary fiscal policy in 2011. Moreover, the structure of ownership, operational capabilities, and debt-paying ability co-varies positively, with state-owned enterprises being most prone to becoming zombie firms. The results allow us to construct various insights into how to govern the zombie firm. These results offer a frame for dealing with zombie firms. Our results are also robust in the sensitivity test of changing the measurement of zombie firms

Hymenolepis diminuta: monosaccharide absorption by the cysticercoid

The cysticercoid of Hymenolepis diminuta was shown to absorb a limited number of monosaccharides by mediated transport. The monosaccharides transported were: glucose, galactose, mannose, l-deoxyglucose, 2-deoxyglucose, 2 deoxygalactose, 3-0-methylglucose and ~-methylglucoside. Other similar monosaccharides i.e. glucose analogues, were not absorbed and it was suggested that they do not possess the minimal structural requirements of actively absorbed compounds. Uptake studies on the recently excysted adult illustrated that it, too, absorbed the same limited range of monosaccharides as the cysticercoid. Extensive inhibition studies were performed, which demonstrated that all of the above mentioned monosaccharides were competitive inhibitors. The Ki value calculated for each hexose was very similar to its own Kt value for the uptake locus. From these data it was concluded that all the hexoses transported were absorbed via the same locus in cysticercoids and recently excysted adults. Hexose absorption in all cases involved a negligible diffusion component and glucose and galactose uptake was also inhibited by phlorizin, several metabolic inhibitors, but not ouabain. The absorption of glucose and galactose by cysticercoids and recently excysted adults was predominantly Na+-sensitive, although 70% of control uptake in cysticercoids and 30% in recently excysted adults took place in Na+-free media. It was assumed that this Na+-insensitive uptake was a function of the uptake locus and therefore probably also occurs in the absorption of the other transported hexoses not tested. The possibilty of two monosaccharide uptake loci in the cysticercoid and recently excysted adult- one Na+-sensitive, the other Na+-insensitive- was discussed. This study has highlighted differences in the uptake specificities and characteristics of the adult and cysticercoid monosaccharide absorption loci. The recently excysted adult was shown to posses 'intermediate' characteristics between those of the cysticercoid and lO day-old adult worm. The differences between adult and cysticercoid monosaccharide uptake loci are thought to reflect both the difference in carbohydrate requirement of cysticercoids and adults and also the availability of absorbable carbohydrate in their environments
