Formation of porous membranes for drug delivery systems
Highly crystalline porous hollow poly (-lactide) (PLLA) fibres suitable for the delivery of various drugs were obtained using a dry-wet spinning process. The pore structure of the fibres could be regulated by changing the spinning systems and spinning conditions. Using the spinning system PLLA-dioxane-water, fibres with a dense toplayer and a spongy sublayer were obtained. The spinning system PLLA-chloroform/toluene-methanol yielded fibres with a very open porous structure. The membrane formation of the former system probably occurs by liquid-liquid demixing followed by crystallization of the polymer rich phase. In the membrane formation process of the spinning system, PLLA-chloroform/toluene-methanol crystallization probably plays a dominant role. The membrane formation process will be related to basic principles of phase separation. The fibres are suitable for the long term zero order delivery of the contraceptive 3-ketodesogestrel and the short term zero order delivery of the cytostatic agent, cisplatin. The drugs are released by dissolution of the drug crystals in the fibre core followed by diffusion through the membrane structure. Short term release of adriamycin could be obtained through an adsorption-desorption mechanism. The pore structures of the fibres have a large influence on the release rates of the drugs investigated. When fibres with dense toplayers were used, low release rates of drugs were observed whereas fibres with well interconnected pore structures over the fibre wall showed very high release rates
Sources of pain related responses to posterior tibial nerve stimulation
Brain responses to posterior tibial nerve stimulation were examined in patients who suffered from a proven neuropathic (traumatic) pain. The aim of this study was to learn if these responses could be used for the assessment of persistent pain and its relief in chronic pain patients. Experiments were carried out in five patients, where usual strategies had failed and spinal cord stimulation was applied. It was found that the measured evoked responses, when these patients were in pain, showed additional waves at latencies at around 110 ms and 150 ms after stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve. The magnetic field and electrical potential distributions at these latencies were dipolar and the responses at 110 ms and 150 ms could be ascribed to two equivalent current dipoles situated in two distinct areas in the brain. In patients, who underwent spinal cord stimulation, the additional wave disappeared once the patient was in a pain free condition. For this group of patients the additional waves appear to be related to the perception of pain and this may offer an objective method to assess this kind of pain and study the effects of spinal cord stimulation. Although not mentioned here, similar results were found for median nerve stimulation
Results of an interlaboratory method performance study for the size determination and quantification of silver nanoparticles in chicken meat by single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS)
Single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) promises fast and selective determination of nanoparticle size and number concentrations. While several studies on practical applications have been published, data on formal, especially interlaboratory validation of sp-ICP-MS, is sparse. An international interlaboratory study was organized to determine repeatability and reproducibility of the determination of the median particle size and particle number concentration of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) in chicken meat. Ten laboratories from the European Union, the USA, and Canada determined particle size and particle number concentration of two chicken meat homogenates spiked with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-stabilized AgNPs. For the determination of the median particle diameter, repeatability standard deviations of 2 and 5% were determined, and reproducibility standard deviations were 15 and 25%, respectively. The equivalent median diameter itself was approximately 60% larger than the diameter of the particles in the spiking solution. Determination of the particle number concentration was significantly less precise, with repeatability standard deviations of 7 and 18% and reproducibility standard deviations of 70 and 90%
A new photon recoil experiment: towards a determination of the fine structure constant
We report on progress towards a measurement of the fine structure constant to
an accuracy of or better by measuring the ratio of the
Planck constant to the mass of the cesium atom. Compared to similar
experiments, ours is improved in three significant ways: (i) simultaneous
conjugate interferometers, (ii) multi-photon Bragg diffraction between same
internal states, and (iii) an about 1000 fold reduction of laser phase noise to
-138 dBc/Hz. Combining that with a new method to simultaneously stabilize the
phases of four frequencies, we achieve 0.2 mrad effective phase noise at the
location of the atoms. In addition, we use active stabilization to suppress
systematic effects due to beam misalignment.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure
