    The feeding behavior of the Balaenoptera physalus, or more commonly known as fin whales, is some of the most extreme and somewhat curious feeding techniques among mammals and other aquatic vertebrate animals. The specific process includes a lunge deep into the ocean, and large gulp of water to catch many krill at one dive. These dives are relatively short due to the high energy expenditure, most likely due to the high drag exerted on the animal during the process. However, this drag is even more significant than previously thought. Due to the effects of apparent mass and momentum flux, the overall force is much greater than previously modeled. By mathematically modeling these effects during the lunge feeding process, researchers can have a more accurate understanding of additional inertial factors of ellipsoids, thus giving a better understanding in airship design

    Various cultural memory institutions ( academic libraries, history museums, public libraries, art museums, state agencies, even theme parks) in the metropolitan area around Springfield, Missouri, have been partnering and collaborating for decades in many ways. The collaboration was primarily intentional but at times organic or opportunistic, and revolved around a local history collection strategy. The collaborative efforts expanded geographically beginning with a local history museum and culminating with a partnership to document a legendary national highway from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. A shared central premise based on preserving and providing access to a city\u27s unique history and place has fostered enduring collaborative relationships

    The Optical Design of CHARIS: An Exoplanet IFS for the Subaru Telescope

    High-contrast imaging techniques now make possible both imaging and spectroscopy of planets around nearby stars. We present the optical design for the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (CHARIS), a lenslet-based, cryogenic integral field spectrograph (IFS) for imaging exoplanets on the Subaru telescope. The IFS will provide spectral information for 138x138 spatial elements over a 2.07 arcsec x 2.07 arcsec field of view (FOV). CHARIS will operate in the near infrared (lambda = 1.15 - 2.5 microns) and will feature two spectral resolution modes of R = 18 (low-res mode) and R = 73 (high-res mode). Taking advantage of the Subaru telescope adaptive optics systems and coronagraphs (AO188 and SCExAO), CHARIS will provide sufficient contrast to obtain spectra of young self-luminous Jupiter-mass exoplanets. CHARIS will undergo CDR in October 2013 and is projected to have first light by the end of 2015. We report here on the current optical design of CHARIS and its unique innovations.Comment: 15 page

    The impact of face-to-face mental health consumer-led teaching on occupational therapy student empathy levels : Two group comparison design

    Introduction Australian and New Zealand accreditation standards for occupational therapy courses mandate consumer involvement in the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses. Consumer involvement in medical, dental, and nursing education has been evidenced as a factor for increasing student empathy. To date, there has been no known research on the impact of mental health consumer involvement on occupational therapy students' empathy. The aim of this study was to investigate if occupational therapy students who receive teaching from a mental health consumer demonstrate higher levels of empathy compared with students who receive teaching delivered by occupational therapy academics. Methods Pre–post, quasi experimental, two group comparison design was used to measure second-year student empathy pre and post a consumer-led teaching tutorial. Students (N = 217) were randomised into two groups across three university campuses: ‘teaching as usual group’ (control) or ‘consumer-led’ group (experimental group). The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was used to measure student empathy. Results N = 138 matched scales were returned. Little difference in empathy scales was detected between groups. The ‘consumer-led’ group increased for the empathy scale by 3.4(95% CI: 0.7,6.1, p = 0.014) but was not statistically significant compared to 1.3(95% CI: −1.0,3.5, p = 0.267) for the control group. Both groups scored highly on empathy. Conclusion This study found that occupational therapy students had pre-existing high levels of empathy. The challenge for future research is to identify appropriate ways to measure the impact of mental health consumer involvement on occupational therapy curriculum and students

    Design and Functional Validation of a Mechanism for Dual-Spinning CubeSats

    The mission of the Micro-sized Microwave Atmospheric Satellite (MicroMAS) is to collect useful atmospheric images using a miniature passive microwave radiometer payload hosted on a low-cost CubeSat platform. In order to collect this data, the microwave radiometer payload must rotate to scan the ground-track perpendicular to the satellite's direction of travel. A custom motor assembly was developed to facilitate the rotation of the payload while allowing the spacecraft bus to remained fixed in the local-vertical, local-horizontal (LVLH) frame for increased pointing accuracy. This paper describes the mechanism used to enable this dual-spinning operation for CubeSats, and the lessons learned during the design, fabrication, integration, and testing phases of the mechanism's development lifecycle
