Oriented polaritons in strongly-coupled asymmetric double quantum well microcavities

Replacing independent single quantum wells inside a strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavity with double quantum wells produces a special type of polariton. Using asymmetric double quantum wells in devices processed into mesas allows the alignment of the electron levels to be voltage-tuned. At the resonant electronic tunnelling condition, we demonstrate that `oriented polaritons' are formed, which possess greatly enhanced dipole moments. Since the polariton-polariton scattering rate depends on this dipole moment, such devices could reach polariton lasing, condensation and optical nonlinearities at much lower threshold powers.Comment: 3 figure

Non-resonant optical control of a spinor polariton condensate

    No full text
We investigate the spin dynamics of polariton condensates spatially separated from and effectively confined by the pumping exciton reservoir. We obtain a strong correlation between the ellipticity of the non-resonant optical pump and the degree of circular polarisation (DCP) of the condensate at the onset of condensation. With increasing excitation density we observe a reversal of the DCP. The spin dynamics of the trapped condensate are described within the framework of the spinor complex Ginzburg-Landau equations in the Josephson regime, where the dynamics of the system are reduced to a current-driven Josephson junction. We show that the observed spin reversal is due to the interplay between an internal Josephson coupling effect and the detuning of the two projections of the spinor condensate via transition from a synchronised to a desynchronised regime. These results suggest that spinor polariton condensates can be controlled by tuning the non-resonant excitation density offering applications in electrically pumped polariton spin switches

    Introduction: Understanding social media monopolies

The containment of labour in accelerated global supply chains : the case of Piraeus Port

    No full text
This article presents a case study of the sale of two of the three piers at the formerly state-owned container port of Piraeus, in Greece to a Chinese company, COSCO, formng a crucial hub in the transit of goods to European markets, and examines the impacts on labour. It places this study in the context of the global consolidation, restructuring and acceleration of supply chains as well as in the specific context of privatisation of infrastructure and deregulation of labour in Greece in the aftermath of the debt crisis. Anatomising the tangled dynamics of deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation, it illustrates the complexity of the interrelationships between specific local factors and global forces in reshaping work. It also shows how the fragmentation of labour resulting from these impacts makes it easy for global corporations in the logistics sector both to consolidate their power and to evade contemporary forms of labour mobilisation. After chronicling the forms of resistance adopted by workers at the port, the article concludes by reflecting on the implications for organisation along the increasingly tightly integrated supply chains which link the labour of production workers with that of logistics workers.Peer reviewe

Koolide autonoomiat peetakse tervikliku koolijuhtimise poliitika väljatöötamise oluliseks eeltingimuseks. Artikkel tugineb kõnealuse projekti raames välja töötatud laiaulatuslikule koolijuhtimise strateegia kujundamise raamistikule ja sellel on kaks põhieesmärki. Esiteks püütakse artiklis näidata, et selle asemel et otsida koolide autonoomia puhul ühte, kõigile sobivat lahendust, tuleks keskenduda konkreetset olukorda arvestavale strateegiale, mille eesmärk on saavutada kindlaksmääratud õpitulemused ja võrdsed võimalused. Teiseks on artiklis kirjeldatud seitset koolide autonoomia põhisuunda, mida on võimalik kohandada Euroopa eripalgeliste haridussüsteemidega.  Full tex
