An experiment to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic ray antiprotons from 100 to 1000 MeV
Production models were developed and the confirmation of each one had significant astrophysical impact. These include radical modifications of propagation models, cosmic ray antiprotons injection from neighboring domains of antimatter, p production by evaporating primordial black holes, and cosmic ray p's as annihilation products of supersymmetry particles that might make up the dark dynamical mass of the Galaxy. It is that p's originating from supersymmetric parents might have distinct spectral features that would survive solar modulation; in one model, higgsino annihilation proceeds through the bb quark-antiquark channel, producing a spectral bump at approx. 0.3 GeV in the p spectrum
Advanced Cogeneration Technology Economic Optimization Study (ACTEOS)
The advanced cogeneration technology economic optimization study (ACTEOS) was undertaken to extend the results of the cogeneration technology alternatives study (CTAS). Cost comparisons were made between designs involving advanced cogeneration technologies and designs involving either conventional cogeneration technologies or not involving cogeneration. For the specific equipment cost and fuel price assumptions made, it was found that: (1) coal based cogeneration systems offered appreciable cost savings over the no cogeneration case, while systems using coal derived liquids offered no costs savings; and (2) the advanced cogeneration systems provided somewhat larger cost savings than the conventional systems. Among the issues considered in the study included: (1) temporal variations in steam and electric demands; (2) requirements for reliability/standby capacity; (3) availability of discrete equipment sizes; (4) regional variations in fuel and electricity prices; (5) off design system performance; and (6) separate demand and energy charges for purchased electricity
Electrical switching of magnetic polarity in a multiferroic BiFeO3 device at room temperature
We have directly imaged reversible electrical switching of the cycloidal
rotation direction (magnetic polarity) in a (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial-film device
at room temperature by non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering. Consistent with
previous reports, fully relaxed (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial films consisting of a
single ferroelectric domain were found to comprise a sub-micron-scale mosaic of
magneto-elastic domains, all sharing a common direction of the magnetic
polarity, which was found to switch reversibly upon reversal of the
ferroelectric polarization without any measurable change of the magneto-elastic
domain population. A real-space polarimetry map of our device clearly
distinguished between regions of the sample electrically addressed into the two
magnetic states with a resolution of a few tens of micron. Contrary to the
general belief that the magneto-electric coupling in BiFeO3 is weak, we find
that electrical switching has a dramatic effect on the magnetic structure, with
the magnetic moments rotating on average by 90 degrees at every cycle.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; corrected figure

Ultrasound-guided trans-rectal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for advanced cervical cancer ablation is feasible: a case report.
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an ablative treatment undergoing assessment for the treatment of benign and malignant disease. We describe the first reported intracavitary HIFU ablation for recurrent, unresectable and symptomatic cervical cancer.A 38 year old woman receiving palliative chemotherapy for metastatic cervical adenocarcinoma was offered ablative treatment from an intracavitary trans-rectal HIFU device (Sonablate® 500). Pre-treatment symptoms included vaginal bleeding and discharge that were sufficient to impede her quality of life. No peri-procedural adverse events occurred. Symptoms resolved completely immediately post-procedure, reappeared at 7 days, increasing to pre-procedural levels by day 30.This first time experience of intracavitary cervical HIFU suggests that it is feasible for palliation of advanced cervical cancer, with no early evidence of unexpected toxicity. Ethical approval had also been granted for the use of per-vaginal access if appropriate. This route, alone or in combination with the rectal route, may provide increased accessibility in future patients with a redesigned device more suited to trans-vaginal ablations.Intracavitary HIFU is a potentially safe procedure for the treatment of cervical cancer and able to provide symptomatic improvement in the palliative setting
New approaches for detecting thresholds of human nephrotoxicity using cadmium as an example.
Damage to the kidneys is one of the primary toxic actions of metals. Nephrotoxic substances not only cause renal disease directly, but they can also destroy renal reserve capacity, potentially placing those people with additional risk factors, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and genetic predispositions, at greater risk. To detect nephrotoxicity in people at a stage where intervention can be effective, sensitive methods are needed. One of the major advantages of using sensitive biomarkers of renal damage is that people who may be particularly susceptible to renal damage can be identified early, at a reversible stage of damage, and the progression to end-stage renal disease may be halted or delayed. Various categories of tests can be used to detect effects of nephrotoxic substances on the kidney. Through the use of biomarkers of damage to various parts of the nephron, U.S. and European studies have both shown a similar pattern of damage among men occupationally exposed to cadmium. These studies indicate various thresholds of renal effects, which researchers suggest represent a cascade of progressively severe damage to the kidney. Research into new biomarkers of damage caused by exposure to nephrotoxic substances centers around mechanisms of cell death, including necrosis and apoptosis; mechanisms of cell growth, regeneration, and proliferation, including factors that control cell cycle, influence gene expression, and modulate nucleic acid synthesis; and genetic factors that increase susceptibility to renal disease. Examples of types of candidate biomarkers include cytokines, lipid mediators, growth factors, transcription factors and protooncogenes, extracellular matrix components (collagen, glycoproteins, and proteoglycans), and cell adhesion molecules. Research into new categories of biomarkers may provide additional insights into the mechanisms of damage caused by nephrotoxins
A study of high-altitude manned research aircraft employing strut-braced wings of high-aspect-ratio
The effect of increased wing aspect ratio of subsonic aircraft on configurations with and without strut bracing. Results indicate that an optimum cantilever configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 26, has a 19% improvement in cruise range when compared to a baseline concept with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 10. An optimum strut braced configuration, with a wing aspect ratio of approximately 28, has a 31% improvment in cruise range when compared to the same baseline concept. This improvement is mainly due to the estimated reduction in wing weight resulting from use of lifting struts. All configurations assume the same mission payload and fuel. The drag characteristics of the wings are enhanced with the use of laminar flow airfoils. A method for determining the extent of attainable natural laminar flow, and methods for preliminary structural design and for aerodynamic analysis of wings lifting struts are presented
Late-Time Tails in Gravitational Collapse of a Self-Interacting (Massive) Scalar-Field and Decay of a Self-Interacting Scalar Hair
We study analytically the initial value problem for a self-interacting
(massive) scalar-field on a Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime. Following the
no-hair theorem we examine the dynamical physical mechanism by which the
self-interacting (SI) hair decays. We show that the intermediate asymptotic
behaviour of SI perturbations is dominated by an oscillatory inverse power-law
decaying tail. We show that at late-times the decay of a SI hair is slower than
any power-law. We confirm our analytical results by numerical simulations.Comment: 16 pages, 3 ps figures, Revte
Magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0.19
The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting
EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.19 has been determined using neutron
scattering. We conclude that the Eu2+ moments are aligned along the c direction
below T_C = 19.0(1) K with an ordered moment of 6.6(2) mu_B in the
superconducting state. An impurity phase similar to the underdoped phase exists
within the bulk sample which orders antiferromagnetically below T_N = 17.0(2)
K. We found no indication of iron magnetic order, nor any incommensurate
magnetic order of the Eu2+ moments in the sample.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B (regular article
