    Equation of state at finite baryon density based on lattice QCD

    We employ the lattice QCD data on Taylor expansion coefficients to extend our previous parametrization of the equation of state to finite baryon density. When we take into account lattice spacing and quark mass dependence of the hadron masses, the Taylor coefficients at low temperature are equal to those of hadron resonance gas. Thus the equation of state is smoothly connected to the hadron resonance gas equation of state at low temperatures.     On Fluctuations of Conserved Charges : Lattice Results Versus Hadron Resonance Gas

    We compare recent lattice results on fluctuations and correlations of strangeness, baryon number and electric charge obtained with p4 improved staggered action with the prediction of hadron resonance gas model.     Long-Term Optical Observations Of Two Lmxbs: Uw Crb (=Ms 1603+260) And V1408 Aql (=4U 1957+115)

    We present new optical photometry of two low-mass X-ray binary stars, UW CrB (MS 1603+260) and V1408 Aql (4U 1957+115). UW CrB is an eclipsing binary and we refine its eclipse ephemeris and measure an upper limit to the rate of change of its orbital period, vertical bar P vertical bar < 4.2 x 10(-11) (unitless). The light curve of UW CrB shows optical counterparts of type I X-ray bursts. We tabulate the times, orbital phases, and fluences of 33 bursts and show that the optical flux in the bursts comes primarily from the accretion disk, not from the secondary star. The new observations are consistent with a model in which the accretion disk in UW CrB is asymmetric and precesses in the prograde direction with a period of similar to 5.5 days. The light curve of V1408 Aql has a low-amplitude modulation at its 9.33 hr orbital period. The modulation remained a nearly pure sine curve in the new data as it was in 1984 and 2008, but its mean amplitude was lower, 18% against 23% in the earlier data. A model in which the orbital modulation is caused by the varying aspect of the heated face of the secondary star continues to give an excellent fit to the light curve.     Wireless sensor network has materialized as a influential technique for marine applications. Delugeinfluence is one of the substantialtragedies in the ecosphere. More than 50% of overall flood harms occur in Asia. Reasons of floods are natural factors such as heavy rainfall, high tides, low lying areas etc., and human factors such as obstruction of channels or augmentation of drainage channels, unsuitable land consumption, deforestation in headwater provinces, etc. Floods can cause losses of life and destructionof properties. Growing Population results in more urbanization, more rainproof area and less penetration and more flood peak and runoff.The objective of this paper is to develop such a WSN that can be used to monitor tide intensity and build a system that can prevent flood in coastal area. The focus is on the design and implementation of the wireless sensor node and that coordinateswith based base station. In this paper we describe the hardware and software architecture of this sensor network. This papervalidates the probability of using costeffective, flexible, and scalable sensor networks to address critical bottlenecks of the emergency response process.Therefore, a Wireless Sensors Network (WSN) is designed and implemented for monitoring of tide in sea and ocean.The System controls flood gate assembled on drainage system which avoids inundation of sea water in coastal area and the results of implementation are interpreted in this paper.     Strong gate coupling of high-Q nanomechanical resonators

    The detection of mechanical vibrations near the quantum limit is a formidable challenge since the displacement becomes vanishingly small when the number of phonon quanta tends towards zero. An interesting setup for on-chip nanomechanical resonators is that of coupling them to electrical microwave cavities for detection and manipulation. Here we show how to achieve a large cavity coupling energy of up to (2 \pi) 1 MHz/nm for metallic beam resonators at tens of MHz. We used focused ion beam (FIB) cutting to produce uniform slits down to 10 nm, separating patterned resonators from their gate electrodes, in suspended aluminum films. We measured the thermomechanical vibrations down to a temperature of 25 mK, and we obtained a low number of about twenty phonons at the equilibrium bath temperature. The mechanical properties of Al were excellent after FIB cutting and we recorded a quality factor of Q ~ 3 x 10^5 for a 67 MHz resonator at a temperature of 25 mK. Between 0.2K and 2K we find that the dissipation is linearly proportional to the temperature.Comment: 6 page

    An observational and numerical case study of a flash sea storm over the Gulf of Genoa

    International audienceDuring the night between the 8 and 9 December 2006 the seawall of the Savona harbour (Liguria Region in north west of Italy) was overtopped by waves. In this work the "Savona flash sea storm" has been studied by analyzing the data recorded by meteo-marine observing stations and the data produced by high resolution meteo-marine numerical models. The data show that, due to the presence of a fast moving low pressure system, the event was characterized by a rapid transition and interaction between two different regimes of winds and related sea states. The results of the study suggest that the most damaging dynamics of the event could be correlated to a bi-modal structure of the wave spectrum. Based on this the authors suggest that a deeper study of the spectral structure of sea storms could lead to define new operational forecasting tools for the preventive evaluation of sea storms damaging potential

    A phase Ib/II study of cabozantinib (XL184) with or without erlotinib in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

    PurposeCabozantinib is a multi-kinase inhibitor that targets MET, AXL, and VEGFR2, and may synergize with EGFR inhibition in NSCLC. Cabozantinib was assessed alone or in combination with erlotinib in patients with progressive NSCLC and EGFR mutations who had previously received erlotinib.MethodsThis was a phase Ib/II study (NCT00596648). The primary objectives of phase I were to assess the safety, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics and to determine maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of cabozantinib plus erlotinib in patients who failed prior erlotinib treatment. In phase II, patients with prior response or stable disease with erlotinib who progressed were randomized to single-agent cabozantinib 100 mg qd vs cabozantinib 100 mg qd and erlotinib 50 mg qd (phase I MTD), with a primary objective of estimating objective response rate (ORR).ResultsSixty-four patients were treated in phase I. Doses of 100 mg cabozantinib plus 50 mg erlotinib, or 40 mg cabozantinib plus 150 mg erlotinib were determined to be MTDs. Diarrhea was the most frequent dose-limiting toxicity and the most frequent AE (87.5% of patients). The ORR for phase I was 8.2% (90% CI 3.3-16.5). In phase II, one patient in the cabozantinib arm (N = 15) experienced a partial response, for an ORR of 6.7% (90% CI 0.3-27.9), with no responses for cabozantinib plus erlotinib (N = 13). There was no evidence that co-administration of cabozantinib markedly altered erlotinib pharmacokinetics or vice versa.ConclusionsDespite responses with cabozantinib/erlotinib in phase I, there were no responses in the combination arm of phase II in patients with acquired resistance to erlotinib. Cabozantinib did not appear to re-sensitize these patients to erlotinib
