Chopped basalt fibres: A new perspective in reinforcing poly(lactic acid) to produce injection moulded engineering composites from renewable and natural resources
This paper focuses on the reinforcing of Poly(lactic acid) with chopped basalt fibres by using silane treated and
untreated basalt fibres. Composite materials with 5–10–15–20–30–40 wt% basalt fibre contents were prepared from silane
sized basalt fibres using extrusion, and injection moulding, while composites with 5–10–15 wt% basalt fibre contents were
also prepared by using untreated basalt fibres as control. The properties of the injection moulded composites were extensively
examined by using quasi-static (tensile, three-point bending) and dynamic mechanical tests (notched and unnotched
Charpy impact tests), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), heat deflection temperature
(HDT) analysis, dimensional stability test, as well as melt flow index (MFI) analysis and scanning electron microscopic
(SEM) observations. It was found that silane treated chopped basalt fibres are much more effective in reinforcing
Poly(lactic acid) than natural fibres; although basalt fibres are not biodegradable but they are still considered as natural (can
be found in nature in the form of volcanic rocks) and biologically inert. It is demonstrated in this paper that by using basalt
fibre reinforcement, a renewable and natural resource based composite can be produced by injection moulding with excellent
mechanical properties suitable even for engineering applications. Finally it was shown that by using adequate drying of
the materials, composites with higher mechanical properties can be achieved compared to literature data
Consistent avoidance of human disturbance over large geographical distances by a migratory bird
Recent work on animal personalities has demonstrated that individuals may show consistent behaviour across situations and contexts. These studies were often carried out in one location and/or during short time intervals. Many animals, however, migrate and spend their life in several geographically distinct locations, and they may either adopt behaviours specific to the local environment or keep consistent behaviours over ecologically distinct locations. Long-distance migratory species offer excellent opportunities to test whether the animals maintain their personalities over large geographical scale, although the practical difficulties associated with these studies have hampered such tests. Here, we demonstrate for the first time consistency in disturbance tolerance behaviour in a long-distance migratory bird, using the common crane Grus grus as an ecological model species. Cranes that hatched in undisturbed habitats in Finland choose undisturbed migratory stop-over sites in Hungary, 1300–2000 km away from their breeding ground. This is remarkable, because these sites are not only separated by large distances, they also differ ecologically: the breeding sites are wooded bogs and subarctic tundra, whereas the migratory stop-over sites are temperate zone alkaline grasslands. The significance of our study goes beyond evolutionary biology and behavioural ecology: local effects on behaviour may carry over large distances, and this hitherto hidden implication of habitat selection needs to be incorporated into conservation planning
The Baby Boom and later life: is critical care fit for the future?
Populations around the world are ageing while in many developed countries the proportion of elderly patients admitted to critical care is rising. It is clear that age alone should not be used as a reason for refusing intensive care admission. Critical care in this patient group is challenging in many ways: with advancing age, several physiological changes occur which all lead to a subsequent reduction of physical performance and compensatory capacity, in many cases additionally aggravated by chronic illness. Subsequently, these age-dependent changes (with or without chronic illness) increase the risk for death, treatment costs and a prolonged length of intensive care and hospital stay. This review explores the potential of using co-morbidity and frailty to predict outcome and to help to make better decisions about critical care admission in the elderly. The authors explore the challenges of using different frailty assessment tools and offer a model for holistic approach to answer these questions

Permutation actions of simple currents on the primaries of a Rational
Conformal Field Theory are considered in the framework of admissible weighted
permutation actions. The solution of admissibility conditions is presented for
cyclic quadratic groups: an irreducible WPA corresponds to each subgroup of the
quadratic group. As a consequence, the primaries of a RCFT with an order n
integral or half-integral spin simple current may be arranged into multiplets
of length k^2 (where k is a divisor of n) or 3k^2 if the spin of the simple
