    A clinically silent tumour of adrenal myelolipoma: A case report

    ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare, non-functional, benign neoplasm which is constituted of mature haematopoietic elements and adipose tissues in various proportions. It is diagnosed accidentally and frequently with the widespread use of imaging modalities. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a 63-year-old lady with incidental findings of adrenal tumour on computed tomography (CT) scan during a routine medical check-up. She underwent tumour resection in view of a large tumour of 7 cm in size. DISCUSSION: CT scan is sensitive to diagnose adrenal myelolipoma in view of its fat-laden property and useful to monitor the tumour progress. Even previously she opted for conservative management; the decision for surgery was made in view of enlarging tumour and risk of surrounding tissue compression.     Red Cell Deformability and Serum Magnesium Level in Non-pregnant and Normal Pregnant Women

    The study was carried out to determine red cell deformability (RCD) and serum magnesium (Mg2+) level in normal pregnancy, in comparison with non-pregnant subjects and to find out relationship between these two parameters in different gestational ages of normal pregnancy. This cross-sectional study was carried out in non-pregnant women (n=25) and 1st, 2nd, 3rd trimesters of normal pregnant women (n=15, 30 and 30, respectively). The RCD was determined by whole blood filtration method and serum Mg2+ level by colourimetric test with Chlorophosphonazo III method. The RCD was expressed as the flow rate (ml/min) as well as red cell deformability index (RCDI).</p

    The insulin receptor substrate-1 gene (IRS-1) gene has been considered a candidate for insulin resistance in type-2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. The most common IRS-1 variant, a glycine to arginine change at codon 972(G972R) is more prevalent among subjects who have features of insulin resistance syndrome associated with type 2 diabetes patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the insulin receptor substrate-1 gene (G972R) polymorphism and insulin resistance in overweight and obese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The genomic DNA of the subjects was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and digested by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) with BstN1 used for codon 972.</p

    First Report of Lumpy Skin Disease in Myanmar and Molecular Analysis of the Field Virus Isolates

    Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) causes lumpy skin disease in cattle and buffaloes, which is associated with significant animal production and economic losses. Since the 2000s, LSDV has spread from Africa to several countries in the Middle East; Europe; and Asia; including, more recently, several south-east Asian countries. In November 2020, Myanmar reported its first LSD outbreak. This study reports on the first incursion of LSD in Myanmar and the molecular analysis of the LSDV detected. Staff from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation collected samples from cattle with suspected LSD infection. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations&rsquo; Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) and the Joint International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)/FAO program&rsquo;s Animal Health and Production laboratory provided LSDV diagnostic support to two regional veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Myanmar. Samples from 13 cattle tested positive by real-time PCR. Selected samples underwent sequence analysis in IAEA laboratories. The results show that the Myanmar LSDV sequences clustered with LSDV isolates from Bangladesh and India, LSDV Kenya, and LSDV NI-2490. Further characterization showed that the Myanmar LSDV is 100% identical to isolates from Bangladesh and India, implying a common source of introduction. These findings inform diagnosis and development of control strategies

    The evolving role of social media in enhancing quality of life: a global perspective across 10 countries

    Abstract Background Excessive or inappropriate use of social media has been linked to disruptions in regular work, well-being, mental health, and overall reduction of quality of life. However, a limited number of studies documenting the impact of social media on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are available globally. Aim This study aimed to explore the perceived social media needs and their impact on the quality of life among the adult population of various selected countries. Methodology A cross-sectional, quantitative design and analytical study utilized an online survey disseminated from November to December 2021. Results A total of 6689 respondents from ten countries participated in the study. The largest number of respondents was from Malaysia (23.9%), followed by Bangladesh (15.5%), Georgia (14.8%), and Turkey (12.2%). The prevalence of social media users was over 90% in Austria, Georgia, Myanmar, Nigeria, and the Philippines. The majority of social media users were from the 18–24 age group. Multiple regression analysis showed that higher education level was positively correlated with all four domains of WHOQoL. In addition, the psychological health domain of quality of life was positively associated in all countries. Predictors among Social Media Needs, Affective Needs (β = -0.07), and Social Integrative Needs (β = 0.09) were significantly associated with psychological health. Conclusion The study illuminates the positive correlation between higher education levels and improved life quality among social media users, highlighting an opportunity for policymakers to craft education-focused initiatives that enhance well-being. The findings call for strategic interventions to safeguard the mental health of the global social media populace, particularly those at educational and health disadvantages
