    Effective Models of In-Class Remedial Reading Instruction

    In light of No Child Left Behind, state assessments, and the pressure to serve children in the least restrictive environment, the methods used to meet student needs are changing considerably. Academic Intervention Services, Title I programs, and special education have all been impacted. This paper will discuss the role of a reading specialist today and how students can receive remedial reading instruction in the regular classroom setting. This topic was selected due to observations of the difficulty my school based literacy educator (SBLE) faces in trying to implement a push-in model of instruction. The purpose of this research is to help the school develop a repertoire of effective co-teaching strategies to ease the implementation of a push-in model. This research then will use previous studies in special education and co-teaching to develop strategies for reading instruction in the classroom. The previous work of Rita Bean dealing with effective reading specialists will be the backbone of the classroom observations that will take place throughout the study. At the end of the research the goal is to have identified the strategies that are already in use at the school and discover several effective collaborative strategies for the reading specialist and classroom teachers to begin to use more often to improve the current program. Ultimately the researcher hopes that these methods will continue to be utilized in the future, both in the school being used for the study and shared with other schools implementing the push-in model

    Analysis of pp → ππ Data at Low Energy and its Implications

    This thesis is a study of data on pp → ππ in the range 0.36 ≤ P(_lab) ≤ 1.55 GeV/c taken by the PS 172 experiment at CERN's LEAR facility. The aim is to elucidate the nature of mesonic states coupling both to baryon-antibaryon and meson-meson channels. The PS 172 data are compared with, and found to be consistent with, earlier data on the same channel, and, in a model independent way, the consistency of the PS 172 results with BNL data on pp pp → π(^0)π(^0) is also established. The first amplitude analysis of pp → π(^0)π(^0) to incorporate the PS 172 data is performed and it is found that from the hundreds of possible amplitudes, only two are compatible with the BNL pp → π(^0)π(^0) data and with threshold conditions. The latter may be applied in a far more rigorous way than has been previously possible since the PS 172 momentum range extends so close to threshold. Both of the solutions found exhibit resonances with spins 0-5 and the masses, widths and couplings of these states are deduced. The lowest spin resonances are found to have such large couplings to NN that they are unlikely to be simple qq states

    Automated 5-year Mortality Prediction using Deep Learning and Radiomics Features from Chest Computed Tomography

    We propose new methods for the prediction of 5-year mortality in elderly individuals using chest computed tomography (CT). The methods consist of a classifier that performs this prediction using a set of features extracted from the CT image and segmentation maps of multiple anatomic structures. We explore two approaches: 1) a unified framework based on deep learning, where features and classifier are automatically learned in a single optimisation process; and 2) a multi-stage framework based on the design and selection/extraction of hand-crafted radiomics features, followed by the classifier learning process. Experimental results, based on a dataset of 48 annotated chest CTs, show that the deep learning model produces a mean 5-year mortality prediction accuracy of 68.5%, while radiomics produces a mean accuracy that varies between 56% to 66% (depending on the feature selection/extraction method and classifier). The successful development of the proposed models has the potential to make a profound impact in preventive and personalised healthcare.Comment: 9 page

In this study, it has been experienced that the broad use of terminology, in the Melbourne context, has been a stumbling block. In its particular context, this has provided the impetus for the development of a model for an inland port that is unambiguous. It is clear from international examples that such a development acts as a significant potential nucleus for regional economic growth, but the lack of a facilitated discussion is an impediment. This model is offered as a facilitator and a useful tool in the construction of a common understanding
