    National subterranean clover improvement programme.

    The National Subterranean Clover Improvement Programme (NSCIP) aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low—oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases: (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co—ordinated by the Plant Breeder. The first phase is conducted at the University Field Station (UFS) and is continued until the F7 or F8 generation, while the latter consists of 2 or 3 stages, each lasting 2-3 years. 1.     Refined Razumov-Stroganov conjectures for open boundaries

    Recently it has been conjectured that the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian, with one boundary operator, acting in a link pattern space is related to vertically and horizontally symmetric alternating-sign matrices (equivalently fully-packed loop configurations (FPL) on a grid with special boundaries).We extend this conjecture by introducing an arbitrary boundary parameter. We show that the parameter dependent ground state is related to refined vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices i.e. with prescribed configurations (respectively, prescribed FPL configurations) in the next to central row. We also conjecture a relation between the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian with two boundary operators and arbitrary coefficients and some doubly refined (dependence on two parameters) FPL configurations. Our conjectures might be useful in the study of ground-states of the O(1) and XXZ models, as well as the stationary states of Raise and Peel models.Comment: 11 pages LaTeX, 8 postscript figure

The volunteers work in a mutual aid, self-production, self-consumption system whose main purpose is identifying and nurturing high-level performers. But the new HMG/Sport England strategies leading to London 2012 expects volunteers to make a major contribution to sustaining and extending participation. The study utilized six focus group sessions with a total of 36 officials and members of 36 clubs across the six counties of Eastern England to assess whether and to what extent government policy objectives can be delivered through the voluntary sector. The study focused on the perceptions and attitudes of club members about being expected to serve public policy and the current pressures they and their clubs face. The results lead the authors to question the appropriateness, sensitivity, and feasibility of current sport policy, particularly the emphasis on VSCs as policy implementers.Peer reviewe

    The open XXZ and associated models at q root of unity

    The generalized open XXZ model at qq root of unity is considered. We review how associated models, such as the qq harmonic oscillator, and the lattice sine-Gordon and Liouville models are obtained. Explicit expressions of the local Hamiltonian of the spin 12{1 \over 2} XXZ spin chain coupled to dynamical degrees of freedom at the one end of the chain are provided. Furthermore, the boundary non-local charges are given for the lattice sine Gordon model and the qq harmonic oscillator with open boundaries. We then identify the spectrum and the corresponding Bethe states, of the XXZ and the q harmonic oscillator in the cyclic representation with special non diagonal boundary conditions. Moreover, the spectrum and Bethe states of the lattice versions of the sine-Gordon and Liouville models with open diagonal boundaries is examined.     Motivated by a study of the crossing symmetry of the `gemini' representation of the affine Hecke algebra we give a construction for crossing tensor space representations of ordinary Hecke algebras. These representations build solutions to the Yang--Baxter equation satisfying the crossing condition (that is, integrable quantum spin chains). We show that every crossing representation of the Temperley--Lieb algebra appears in this construction, and in particular that this construction builds new representations. We extend these to new representations of the blob algebra, which build new solutions to the Boundary Yang--Baxter equation (i.e. open spin chains with integrable boundary conditions). We prove that the open spin chain Hamiltonian derived from Sklyanin's commuting transfer matrix using such a solution can always be expressed as the representation of an element of the blob algebra, and determine this element. We determine the representation theory (irreducible content) of the new representations and hence show that all such Hamiltonians have the same spectrum up to multiplicity, for any given value of the algebraic boundary parameter. (A corollary is that our models have the same spectrum as the open XXZ chain with nondiagonal boundary -- despite differing from this model in having reference states.) Using this multiplicity data, and other ideas, we investigate the underlying quantum group symmetry of the new Hamiltonians.     The role of orthogonal polynomials in the six-vertex model and its combinatorial applications

    The Hankel determinant representations for the partition function and boundary correlation functions of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions are investigated by the methods of orthogonal polynomial theory. For specific values of the parameters of the model, corresponding to 1-, 2- and 3-enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices (ASMs), these polynomials specialize to classical ones (Continuous Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, and Continuous Dual Hahn, respectively). As a consequence, a unified and simplified treatment of ASMs enumerations turns out to be possible, leading also to some new results such as the refined 3-enumerations of ASMs. Furthermore, the use of orthogonal polynomials allows us to express, for generic values of the parameters of the model, the partition function of the (partially) inhomogeneous model in terms of the one-point boundary correlation functions of the homogeneous one.Comment: Talk presented by F.C. at the Short Program of the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques: Random Matrices, Random Processes and Integrable Systems, Montreal, June 20 - July 8, 200
