    Probing neutrino and Higgs sectors in SU(2)1×SU(2)2×U(1)YSU(2)_1 \times SU(2)_2 \times U(1)_Y model with lepton-flavor non-universality

    The neutrino and Higgs sectors in the \mbox{SU(2)}_1 \times \mbox{SU(2)}_2 \times \mbox{U(1)}_Y model with lepton-flavor non-universality are discussed. We show that active neutrinos can get Majorana masses from radiative corrections, after adding only new singly charged Higgs bosons. The mechanism for generation of neutrino masses is the same as in the Zee models. This also gives a hint to solving the dark matter problem based on similar ways discussed recently in many radiative neutrino mass models with dark matter. Except the active neutrinos, the appearance of singly charged Higgs bosons and dark matter does not affect significantly the physical spectrum of all particles in the original model. We indicate this point by investigating the Higgs sector in both cases before and after singly charged scalars are added into it. Many interesting properties of physical Higgs bosons, which were not shown previously, are explored. In particular, the mass matrices of charged and CP-odd Higgs fields are proportional to the coefficient of triple Higgs coupling μ\mu. The mass eigenstates and eigenvalues in the CP-even Higgs sector are also presented. All couplings of the SM-like Higgs boson to normal fermions and gauge bosons are different from the SM predictions by a factor chc_h, which must satisfy the recent global fit of experimental data, namely 0.995<ch<10.995<|c_h|<1. We have analyzed a more general diagonalization of gauge boson mass matrices, then we show that the ratio of the tangents of the WWW-W' and ZZZ-Z' mixing angles is exactly the cosine of the Weinberg angle, implying that number of parameters is reduced by 1.     Size dependence of incipient dislocation plasticity in Ni3Al

    Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to study the incipient dislocation plasticity in Ni3Al. Dislocation nucleation is found to occur preferentially at energetic atomic clusters with larger-than-average relative displacements. From the simulated distribution of the atomic relative displacements, a scaling model is proposed to predict the size dependence of the incipient plasticity condition in real-sized specimens. © 2005 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Steady-state serrated deformation of metallic glass during indentation

    Using an exponential load profile with a Berkovich tip, the strain bursts produced during nanoindentation of a (Cu55Mg33Y12)-Be bulk metallic glass are found to reach a steady state, in which the hardness becomes constant, the displacement jumps normalized by the indent depth approach a constant range 1.4 ± 1.2% and correspond to a reduction in hardness of 2.8 ± 2.4%, and the inter-burst duration multiplied by the strain rate approaches a constant range 1.8 ± 0.6%.     Sersiclets - A Matched Filter Extension of Shapelets for Weak Lensing Studies

    The precision study of dark matter using weak lensing by large scale structure is strongly constrained by the accuracy with which one can measure galaxy shapes. Several methods have been devised but none have demonstrated the ability to reach the level of precision required by future weak lensing surveys. In this Letter we explore new avenues to the existing Shapelets approach, combining a priori knowledge of the galaxy profile with the power of orthogonal basis function decomposition. This Letter discusses the new issues raised by this matched filter approach and proposes promising alternatives to shape measurement techniques. In particular it appears that the use of a matched filter (e.g. Sersic profile) restricted to elliptical radial fitting functions resolves several well known Shapelet issues.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures.     Health and nutrition of Orang Asli (Che Wong) at Krau Wildlife Reserve, Pahang – a descriptive study

    This study was conducted to determine the nutritional status of Orang Asli (Che Wong) men, women and children. Through purposive sampling, 29 households consisting of 29 men, 28 women, and 20 children (10 female and 10 male) were chosen. Demographic and socioeconomic information were collected using structured questionnaire. Men and women were measured for height, weight, blood pressure and waist circumference while weight and height was measured for children. Mean age for men, women and children were 39.89±17.09 years, 33.7±16.08 years, and 3.25±1.33 years respectively. Only 6.9% of men and 14.3% of women completed 3 years of primary school education. The average household income was RM 261.56±254.40. Mean Body Mass Index (BMI) for men was 21.83±3.40 (underweight: 13.8%, normal: 72.4%, overweight: 10.3%, and obese: 3.3%). Mean Body Mass Index (BMI) for women was 28.6±4.05 (underweight: 23.3%, normal weight: 46.3%, and overweight: 26.7%). The mean circumference for men was 74.43±6.09cm and for women, it was 73.92±6.80 cm. However, caution should be exercised when interpreting the BMI results when none of them had waist circumference more than 102 cm (men) and 88 cm (women). About 10.3% of the men and 10.7% of women had blood pressure of more than 130/85 mmHg. The prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting of children was 45%, 35% and 30% respectively. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) consisting of seven food groups (cereals, meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, dairy products and drinks) was used to determine the dietary diversity score. The minimum score was 0 and the maximum score was 37. Mean total score for men was 9.46±3.70 (maximum score of 18) and for women, it was 9.48 ± 4.63 (maximum score of 21). Food patterns for both male and female were similar whereby fruits and milk groups were the least consumed. In conclusion, further research should be conducted in the Che Wong community to determine the association between food intake and nutritional status of Orang Asli

    The effect of motion on the perception of material appearance

    We analyze the effect of motion in the perception of material appearance. First, we create a set of stimuli containing 72 realistic materials, rendered with varying degrees of linear motion blur. Then we launch a large-scale study on Mechanical Turk to rate a given set of perceptual attributes, such as brightness, roughness, or the perceived strength of reflections. Our statistical analysis shows that certain attributes undergo a significant change, varying appearance perception under motion. In addition, we further investigate the perception of brightness, for the particular cases of rubber and plastic materials. We create new stimuli, with ten different luminance levels and seven motion degrees. We launch a new user study to retrieve their perceived brightness. From the users'' judgements, we build two-dimensional maps showing how perceived brightness varies as a function of the luminance and motion of the material
