    Nonprofit organizational and work unit identification and the occupational stress process

    Research investigating the transactional approach to the work stressor-employee adjustment relationship has described many negative main effects between perceived stressors in the workplace and employee outcomes. A considerable amount of literature, theoretical and empirical, also describes potential moderators of this relationship. Organizational identification has been established as a significant predictor of employee job-related attitudes. To date, research has neglected investigation of the potential moderating effect of organizational identification in the work stressor-employee adjustment relationship. On the basis of identity, subjective fit and sense of belonging literature it was predicted that higher perceptions of identification at multiple levels of the organization would mitigate the negative effect of work stressors on employee adjustment. It was expected, further, that more proximal, lower order identifications would be more prevalent and potent as buffers of stressors on strain. Predictions were tested with an employee sample from five organizations (N = 267). Hierarchical moderated multiple regression analyses revealed some support for the stress-buffering effects of identification in the prediction of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, particularly for more proximal (i.e., work unit) identification. These positive stress-buffering effects, however, were present for low identifiers in some situations. The present study represents an extension of the application of organizational identity theory by identifying the effects of organizational and workgroup identification on employee outcomes in the nonprofit context. Our findings will contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics in nonprofit organizations and therefore contribute to the development of strategy and interventions to deal with identity-based issues in nonprofits

    Monitoring identity of past, current and future: a performance management system perspective

    This paper seeks to explore how organisations can effectively use performance management systems (PMS) to monitor collective identities. The monitoring of relationships between identity and an influential PMS—the balanced scorecard (BSC)—are explored. Drawing from identity and management accounting literature, this paper argues that identity products, patternings and processes are commonly positioned, monitored and interpreted through the multiple perspectives and levels of the BSC. Specifically, human, technical and organisational capital under the Learning and Growth perspective of the BSC can incorporate various identity measures that sustain the relative, distinctive and fluid nature of identities. The value of this research is to strengthen the theoretical grounds which position identity as an important dimension of organisational capital in PMS

    Increasing learners' satisfaction/intention to adopt more e-learning

    Purpose: E-learning is an organisationally risky investment given the cost and poor levels of adoption by users. In order to gain a better understanding of this problem, a study was conducted into the use of e-learning in a rail organisation. Design/methodology/approach: Using an online survey, employees of a rail-sector organisation were questioned about their use and likelihood of adoption of e-learning. This study explores the factors that affect the way in which learners experience and perceive such systems. Using statistical analysis, twelve hypotheses are tested and explored. Relationships between learning satisfaction, intention to adopt and the characteristics of e-learning systems were established. Findings: The study found that e-learning characteristics can buffer the relationship between learner characteristics and intention to adopt further e-learning in the future. Further, we found that high levels of support can compensate individuals who are low in technological efficacy to adopt e-learning. Research limitations/implications: The cross-sectional design of the study and its focus on measuring intention to adopt as opposed to actual adoption are both limitations. Future research using longitudinal design and research employing a time lag design measuring actual adoption as well as intention are recommended. Practical implications: From a practical perspective, organizations can focus on the actual content and authenticity of the learning experience delivered by the e-learning system to significantly impact how employees will perceive and use e-learning in the future. Low technological efficacy individuals tend not to adopt new technology. Instead of changing individuals’ personalities, organizations can implement supportive policies and practices which would lead to higher e-learning adoption rate among low efficacy individuals. Originality/value: The study integrates technology adoption and learning literatures in developing enablers for e-learning in organizations. Further, this study collects data from rail employees, and therefore the findings are practical to an industry

    Performance of Slabs with varying Reinforcement Configurations

    The subject of ductility of suspended slabs constructed with Class L mesh as primary reinforcement led to widespread industry discussion over recent years which led to the current provisions in Australian Standard 3600 - Concrete Structures (2009) [1] which outlines the analysis, design and detailing of such slabs. The aim of this research program was to examine the behaviour – in terms of ultimate strength and ductility parameters - of simply supported one way reinforced concrete slabs with differing reinforcement types with relatively consistent tensile steel reinforcing ratios of the order of 0.4%. Eight slabs were constructed with a range of reinforcing including (i) class L mesh only, (ii) class N reinforcing bar only, (iii) combination of L class mesh and N class bar or (iv) reinforcing consisting of two layers of class L mesh. The classification of the reinforcing is in accordance to Australian and New Zealand Standard 4671 – Steel Reinforcing Materials (2001) [2]. The behaviour of slabs reinforced with L class mesh and steel fibre reinforced concrete was also investigated. This paper presents the test data for 8 test slabs. Four of the slabs were duplicate tests; Control 1 and Control 2 had the same reinforcing arrangement consisting of mesh SL 102; and CS2 and N10 slabs both had 4 N10-220 in both directions ofslab. The testing of duplicate tests enabled an assessment of the variability of test data and sensitivity of the ductility parameter W1/W0

This multifunctional hybrid material is found to be a redox-active soft nanomaterial and demonstrates a new molecular design strategy with potential for applications in photo- or electro-catalysis

    An early giant planet instability recorded in asteroidal meteorites

    Giant planet migration appears widespread among planetary systems in our Galaxy. However, the timescales of this process, which reflect the underlying dynamical mechanisms, are not well constrained, even within the solar system. Since planetary migration scatters smaller bodies onto intersecting orbits, it would have resulted in an epoch of enhanced bombardment in the solar system's asteroid belt. To accurately and precisely quantify the timescales of migration, we interrogate thermochronologic data from asteroidal meteorites, which record the thermal imprint of energetic collisions. We present a database of 40K-40Ar system ages from chondrite meteorites and evaluate it with an asteroid-scale thermal code coupled to a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion. Simulations require bombardment in order to reproduce the observed age distribution and identify a bombardment event beginning ~11 million years after the Sun formed. Our results associate a giant planet instability in our solar system with the dissipation of the gaseous protoplanetary disk.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, 10 extended data items (8 figures, 2 tables).     The development of a sub-atmospheric two-phase thermosyphon natural gas preheater using a lumped capacitance model and comparison with experimental results

    The pre-heating of natural gas supplied to both domestic and industrial use is required to counteract the Joule–Thomson effect due to pressure reduction. Most existing pre-heaters are in the form of water bath heaters, where both the burner and exchanger are immersed in a closed water tank. These systems usually have a low efficiency, and as a result of thermal inertia have a long time lag to accommodate changes in Natural Gas (NG) mass flow rates. In this paper, the two-phase thermosyphon theory is implemented in a sub-atmospheric context to design and study a new preheating system in a transient fashion. This system is partially vacuumed (absolute pressure of 2 kPa) to lower the temperature operation range to reduce the required working fluid volume, hence reduce the required energy and improve the response time. The transient numerical model is based on a lumped capacitance method, and the full system is solved by using a fourth order Runge–Kutta method. The numerical model is validated through comparison with experimental results. Minimum efficiency of 68% has been achieved in some tests, whilst maximum efficiency of 80% in other tests. Simulations of the thermosyphon preheater system have been performed to analyse the effect of changing the working fluid volume and composition
