The potential of lactoferrin, ovotransferrinand lysozyme as antiviral andimmune-modulating agents in COVID-19
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is spreading rapidly with no established effective treatments. While most cases are mild, others experience uncontrolled inflammatory responses with oxidative stress, dysregulation of iron and coagulation as features. Lactoferrin, ovotransferrin and lysozyme are abundant, safe antimicrobials that have wide antiviral as well as immunomodulatory properties. In particular, lactoferrin restores iron homeostasis and inhibits replication of SARS-CoV, which is closely related to SARS-CoV-2. Ovotransferrin has antiviral peptides and activities that are shared with lactoferrin. Both lactoferrin and lysozyme are ‘immune sensing’ as they may stimulate immune responses or resolve inflammation. Mechanisms by which these antimicrobials may treat or prevent COVID-19, as well as sources and forms of these, are reviewed

Deep supervised hashing for fast retrieval of radio image cubes
The shear number of sources that will be detected by next-generation radio
surveys will be astronomical, which will result in serendipitous discoveries.
Data-dependent deep hashing algorithms have been shown to be efficient at image
retrieval tasks in the fields of computer vision and multimedia. However, there
are limited applications of these methodologies in the field of astronomy. In
this work, we utilize deep hashing to rapidly search for similar images in a
large database. The experiment uses a balanced dataset of 2708 samples
consisting of four classes: Compact, FRI, FRII, and Bent. The performance of
the method was evaluated using the mean average precision (mAP) metric where a
precision of 88.5\% was achieved. The experimental results demonstrate the
capability to search and retrieve similar radio images efficiently and at
scale. The retrieval is based on the Hamming distance between the binary hash
of the query image and those of the reference images in the database.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Dual HLA B*42 and B*81-reactive T cell receptors recognize more diverse HIV-1 Gag escape variants
Closely related HLA alleles presenting similar HIV-1 epitopes can be associated with variable clinical outcome. Here the authors report their findings on CD8+ T cell responses to the HIV-1 Gag-p24 TL9 immunodominant epitope in the context of closely related protective and less protective HLA alleles, and their differential effect on viral contro
Economics of Insecticide use and Potential for Bt Maize Varieties in the Control of Stalkborer in Kenya.
Maize is the staple food crop and source of income for majority of the Kenyan population and many sub-Saharan African countries. The increasing Kenyan population demands an increase in maize production if intermittent food deficits have to be averted. Since the introduction of improved maize varieties in mid-1960, the start of Green Revolution period, maize yields increased drastically up to 1970s and started declining from 1980s to-date. The key contributory factors are nutrient mining, sub-optimal input use and insect pest damage. Of the insect pests, stalk borer is of economic importance. Currently, KARI and CIMMYT are developing maize varieties that are tolerant to stalk borer damage. In order to evaluate the potential impact of these interventions economics of stalk borer control at farm level was evaluated. Surveys complemented with on-farm trials were executed in six major maize growing zones of Kenya. Farmers were randomly selected and a sample-frame established after which a total of 1854 households were randomly selected using random sampling technique. Each household was interviewed using structured questionnaire. Data on method of stalk borer control and the type insecticides used was collected. Partial budget and economic surplus models were used. The results indicated that very few farmers control stalk borer in maize despite significant stalk borer losses of about 15%. Therefore if Bt maize is introduced in Kenya it is likely to reduce these losses. This will benefit many hungry and poor Kenyans with improved household food supply and on farm incomes, in line with Government policy of food security and poverty eradication.Crop Production/Industries,
