Protected natural resources: Media representations of national parks

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to set trends of reporting about national parks as exquisite units of national importance through the research of online editions of dominant media in Serbia. Since 2009 the entire set of ā€œgreen lawsā€œ was adopted, the great progress has been made in this area, and the research will refer to the next year of 2010 so it can be detected how much is the public informed by the means of communication about ambient, ecologic, aesthetic and recreational potentials of the national parks in Serbia

Roma in Serbia after the Collapse of Yugoslavia: Political implications and media silence on racial violence

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to clarify the Roma issue in Serbia. Media representations of attacks against Roma are very important. The Roma are marginalized members of Serbian society. They are often the victims of violence and discrimination that are related to stereotypes and prejudice about Roma ā€othernessā€. The media paid special attention to the murder of DuÅ”ko Jovanović in 1997 because it was the first official murder based on racial hatred. This case study shows that the topics of the assassination of the Roma are no more attractive to the media and that the ā€œspiral of silenceā€ occupies an important role

EUROPEAN PICTURE OF THE ELDERLY PEOPLE: RESEARCH ON THE MAIN SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AND TRENDS IN SELECTED COUNTRIES

The paper deals with the demographic topics of ageing, age and the elderly people in Europe. Seeing as these topics still take up marginal space in most research fields except gerontology, the aim of the paper is to deepen the thematic framework. Because of that, but also because it is difficult to reach more detailed data on generations over 65 in Europe, this paper will present the results of the research on the basic socio-demographic characteristics of elderly people in 11 European countries. The data on which this research is based comes from the last waves of census; they were harmonized and obtained in the LIS center of the University of Luxembourg. The data show the basic socio-demographic characteristics classified into three groups: where do people over 65 live, with whom do older than 65 live, how do older than 65 live. The data also show that in northern and western countries, which are economically more developed, the elderly population lives in cities more. The number of households with one elderly member in rural areas increases in Central Europe, and the highest percentage of those older than 65 in rural areas live in Greece and Serbia. The connection between certain countries and the education level of the elderly is statistically meaningful. Therefore, in northern and western countries, which are more developed, there are more highly educated elderly people than in less developed countries in Central and South Europe

INTER-ETHNIC MARRIAGES AMONG ANTAGONISTIC NATIONS: POSITIVE MEDIA DISCOURSE ABOUT ALBANIAN WOMEN AND SERBIAN MEN

    Get PDF
This is a study about inter-ethnic marriages between the members of two antagonistic nations in the Western Balkans: Serbian and Albanian. The first part of the paper describes the geographical and socio-cultural framework of the research, along with presenting key historical factors that have contributed to the long-lasting antagonism between the above-mentioned ethnic groups. The second part of the paper is an analysis of media coverage of inter-ethnic marriages between Serbian men and Albanian women. By depicting the socio-cultural context in which these "ordinary" people have founded their marriages, some gender-related issues were opened and the binding of various historical, cultural, and demographic factors that are reflected in the lives of the ā€œinvisibleā€ Albanian women in Serbia was shown. Their ā€œinvisibilityā€ and marginalization have been deepened by the absence of their administrative status in Serbia, the absence of the right to healthcare, social protection, and the complete economic dependence on a man/husband. As a result of this, the marginalization, invisibility, and submission of these women to the will of their husbands is another example of the reproduction of strong patriarchy in the Western Balkans in the 21st century

Community role in heritage management and sustainable tourism development: Case study of the Danube region in Serbia

Destinations and cultural resources that are used and respected by both residents and tourists are the ultimate goal of sustainable tourism development. Sustainable tourism as an emerging paradigm seems to enhance the existing conceptual frameworks on tourism planning and development by making the residents its focal point. In that sense, opinions, and attitudes of residents on the protection of cultural heritage and the possibilities of tourism development in their environment are very important. The Danube region in Serbia is recognized as a region of high-quality natural characteristics and cultural resources which gives an outstanding opportunity for tourism development. The purpose of the study is to examine the current state of the heritage management in the Danube region in Serbia and to outline the tourism development potentials of the area. The objective of the study is to examine the role of the local communities in these aspects. The methods used in the study were a public opinion survey, a focus group interview of 12 experts and the evaluation of the sustainable cultural tourism development indicators. The results have shown that local population in the Danube region in Serbia has, in general, a positive opinion and initial enthusiasm when it comes to tourism development, but their role is marginalized in the process. This is the key proposition to start an initiative for the local communities to actively participate in tourism development.Special Issue: Public Administration and Society: Development, Community and Organizatio

Genomic and clinical findings in patients with 22q11.2 duplication syndrome

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), schizophrenia, and intellectual disability, are caused by disruption of early brain development. NDDs represent important public health challenge in modern societies with prevalence of about 10 to 15% of all births and the tendency of increasing worldwide. On the other side, treatments of NDDs are focused on symptoms due to limited understanding of underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Individuals with the 22q11.2 duplication syndrome (22q11.2dup), caused by heterozygous 22q11.2 microduplication, have an elevated risk of developing NDDs. Literature data revealed that ASD is detected in 14-25% of patients with 22q11.2dup while schizophrenia is less common in these patients than in the general population, suggesting that 22q11.2dup might be protective against schizophrenia. We investigated genomic and clinical findings in cohort of 8 patients with 22q11.2dup. The majority of patients have 3Mb duplication. Five patients have 22q11.2 microduplication inherited from their parents. Other CNVs or SNVs are detected in 5 out of 8 patients. Common medical anomalies in our cohort of patients include developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, heart malformations, anomalies of the skeletal system, and anomalies affecting the eye. Characterization of a cohort of patients with 22q11.2dup is important since 22q11.2dup represents a powerful model to get insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying NDDs.BOOK OF ABSTRACTS: 8th CONGRESS OF SERBIAN NEUROSCIENCE SOCIETY with international participation 31 May ā€“ 2 June 2023. Speech Sounds Production, Narrative Skills, and Verbal Memory of Children with 22q11.2 Microdeletion

    Get PDF
22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), the most frequent microdeletion syndrome in humans, is related to a high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. About 95% of patients with 22q11.2DS have speech and language impairments. Global articulation, story generation, and verbal memory tests were applied to compare articulatory characteristics of speech sounds, spontaneous language abilities, and immediate verbal memory between four groups of Serbian-speaking children: patients with 22q11.2DS, children with clinical presentation of 22q11.2DS that do not have the microdeletion, children with non-syndromic congenital heart defects, and their peers with typical speechā€“sound development. The obtained results showed that children with this microdeletion have impaired articulation skills and expressive language abilities. However, we did not observe weaker receptive language skills and immediate verbal memory compared to healthy controls. Children with 22q11.2DS should be considered a risk category for the development of speechā€“sound pathology and expressive language abilities. Since speech intelligibility is an instrument of cognition and adequate peer socialization, and language impairment in school-aged children with 22q11DS might be an indicator of increased risk for later psychotic symptoms, patients with 22q11.2 microdeletion should be included in a program of early stimulation of speechā€“language development immediately after diagnosis is established
