    Enhancement of R1234ze(Z) Pool Boiling Heat Transfer on Horizontal Titanium Tubes for High Temperature Heat Pumps

    Low GWP refrigerant R1234ze(Z) is promising candidate of refrigerant used in industrial high temperature heat pumps. The heat exchangers of such heat pumps designed for waste heat recovery systems is exposed to the exhaust containing acid substances. Using titanium as the material can be one solution to prevent oxidation. In this study, pool boiling heat transfer characteristics outside of horizontal titanium tubes were experimentally investigated for R1234ze(Z) at relatively higher temperatures. A plain tube and three enhanced tubes having different fin geometry were tested in a pressure vessel and the bubble behavior was observed. The experiment covers saturation temperatures from 10 to 60 °C and heat fluxes from 0.55 to 79.8 kWm-2. With the plain tube, it was confirmed that the measured heat transfer coefficients on the plain tube agree with the calculated heat transfer coefficients by Jung et al. correlation proposed for other HFC refrigerants within ±15%. The notable difference to the typical material copper is thermal resistance over the tube wall. Because the thermal conductivity of titanium is only 19 W m-1K-1 (that of copper is approximately 360 W m-1K-1), the thermal resistance is onsiderable. Comparing to the plain tube, the tested enhanced tube exhibited 2.8 to 5.1 times higher heat transfer coefficient, on average, in the test range. This could compensate the disadvantage in thermal conductivity for titanium. The enhancement ratio predominantly depends on the saturation temperature and wall heat flux. At conditions of the higher saturation temperatures and lower heat fluxes, where smaller bubbles were observed, the test tube having smaller fin spaces exhibits higher heat transfer coefficient.     Morphological Changes in Patient Lens Epithelial Cells after Intravitreal Silicone Oil Injection

    The subject patient (47-year-old male) had received silicone oil injection into the vitreous cavity of his left eye for the treatment of retinal detachment in 1986. Two months later, the silicone oil was removed from the vitreous cavity, as the retina was reattached. Soon after the operation, the lens of the eye gradually became opaque to mature cataract, and his left visual acuity had fallen to hand motion upon his present admission to the hospital. The lens epithelium obtained by anterior capsulotomy during the extracapsular cataract extraction was examined morphologically by transmission electron microscopy. Inside the anterior lens capsule, abnormal epithelial proliferation was observed. The epithelial cells changed their shapes from cuboidal to spindle, accompanied by new basal lamina-like substances around them. The spindle-shaped cells stretched like pseudopodia. The extracellular matrices were abundant and composed of collagen fibers. Fragments and dissolved materials of the fibers were also seen in some specimens. Lipid-like substances and myelin-like structures were often observed in the relatively well preserved cytoplasm. As a result, it is surmised that cataract formation after intravitreal silicone oil injection may be associated with fibrous pseudometaplasia of the lens epithelial cells and phagocytosed silicone oil deposits in the epithelial cells

    A long-forgotten ‘dinosaur’ bone from a museum cabinet, uncovered to be a Japan\u27s iconic extinct mammal, Paleoparadoxia (Desmostylia, Mammalia)

    Here, we report a new ‘discovery’ of a desmostylian fossil in the geological collection at a national university in Japan. This fossil was unearthed over 60 years ago and donated to the university. Owing to the original hand-written note kept with the fossil in combination with interview investigation, we were able to reach two equally possible fossil sites in the town of Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima. Through the interviews, we learned that the fossil was discovered during construction of a debris flow barrier and that it was recognized as a ‘dinosaur’ bone among the locals and displayed in the Village Hall before/until the town experienced a fire disaster in 1954. As scientific findings, the fossil was identified to be a right femur of Paleoparadoxia (Desmostylia), which shows well-preserved muscle scars on the surface. The age was estimated to be 15.9 Ma or younger in zircon-dating. This study shows an excellent case that historical and scientific significances could be extracted from long-forgotten uncatalogued specimens as long as the original information is retained with the specimens

    Respiratory Bronchiolitis-associated Interstitial Lung Disease

    We report a case of respiratory bronchiolitis-associated interstitial lung disease (RB-ILD). A 57-year-old man with a 74-pack-year smoking history, had cough, stridor, yellow purulent sputum and general fatigue for several days. The symptoms almost improved after treatment. However, chest computed tomography (CT) showed diffuse centrilobular ground glass opacities although the chest X-ray film showed no obvious opacities. Examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed relative lymphocytosis. Examination of lung biopsy obtained by video-assisted thoracoscopy allowed the diagnosis of RBILD. The opacities on the CT scan were improved spontaneously without any treatment after cessation of smoking

    Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia Induced by Minocycline

    We report a case of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) caused by minocycline (MINO). A 59- year-old man visited to our hospital because of flu-like symptoms. He had been treated with MINO for a few weeks for the skin eruption. The chest radiograph showed consolidations in both lung fields. He was admitted to our hospital for further examination. An elevation of lymphocyte percentage was seen in his bronchoalveolar lavage and a diagnosis of BOOP was confirmed by video-assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy. The symptoms, laboratory and radiological findings gradually improved without steroid therapy. Although the lymphocyte stimulation test (LST) of peripheral blood for MINO was negative, a positive oral provocation test confirmed the role of MINO in the induction of BOOP
