Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation, demyelination, gliosis (scarring), and neuronal loss; the course can be relapsing-remitting or progressive. Manifestations of MS vary from a benign illness to a rapidly evolving and incapacitating disease requiring profound lifestyle adjustments. We report a 24 year old female who presented with right internuclear ophthalmoplegia with right lower motor neuron facial nerve palsy which is called eight and half syndrome. The etiology in our patient was multiple sclerosis which was confirmed by radio-imaging studies. Patient improved on pulse therapy of methyl prednisolone and tapering dose of steroids

On stoichiometry and intermixing at the spinel/perovskite interface in CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 thin films

The performance of complex oxide heterostructures depends primarily on the interfacial coupling of the two component structures. This interface character inherently varies with the synthesis method and conditions used since even small composition variations can alter the electronic, ferroelectric, or magnetic functional properties of the system. The focus of this article is placed on the interface character of a pulsed laser deposited CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 thin film. Using a range of state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopy methodologies, the roles of substrate morphology, interface stoichiometry, and cation intermixing are determined on the atomic level. The results reveal a surprisingly uneven BaTiO3 substrate surface formed after the film deposition and Fe atom incorporation in the top few monolayers inside the unit cell of the BaTiO3 crystal. Towards the CoFe2O4 side, a disordered region extending several nanometers from the interface was revealed and both Ba and Ti from the substrate were found to diffuse into the spinel layer. The analysis also shows that within this somehow incompatible composite interface, a different phase is formed corresponding to the compound Ba2Fe3Ti5O15, which belongs to the ilmenite crystal structure of FeTiO3 type. The results suggest a chemical activity between these two oxides, which could lead to the synthesis of complex engineered interfaces

Circulating leukocyte telomere length is highly heritable among families of Arab descent

Background Telomere length, an indicator of ageing and longevity, has been correlated with several biomarkers of cardiometabolic disease in both Arab children and adults. It is not known, however, whether or not telomere length is a highly conserved inheritable trait in this homogeneous cohort, where age-related diseases are highly prevalent. As such, the aim of this study was to address the inheritability of telomere length in Saudi families and the impact of cardiometabolic disease biomarkers on telomere length. Methods A total of 119 randomly selected Saudi families (123 adults and 131 children) were included in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometrics were obtained and fasting blood samples were taken for routine analyses of fasting glucose and lipid profile. Leukocyte telomere length was determined using quantitative real time PCR. Results Telomere length was highly heritable as assessed by a parent-offspring regression [h2 = 0.64 (p = 0.0006)]. Telomere length was modestly associated with BMI (R2 0.07; p-value 0.0087), total cholesterol (R2 0.08; p-value 0.0033), and LDL-cholesterol (R2 0.15; p-value 3 x 10-5) after adjustments for gender, age and age within generation. Conclusion The high heritability of telomere length in Arab families, and the associations of telomere length with various cardiometabolic parameters suggest heritable genetic fetal and/or epigenetic influences on the early predisposition of Arab children to age-related diseases and accelerated ageing

Fabrication of high temperature surface acoustic wave devices for sensor applications

    No full text
Surface acoustic devices have been shown to be suitable not only for signal processing but also for sensor applications. In this paper high temperature surface acoustic wave devices based on gallium orthophosphate have been fabricated, using a lift-off technique and tested for high frequency applications at temperatures up to 600 ºC. The measured S-parameter (S11) has been used to study the mass loading effect of the platinum electrodes and turnover temperature of GaPO4 with a 5? cut. The analysis of these results shows that the mass loading effect can be used to predict the desired resonant frequency of the SAW devices. Also two different adhesion layers for Pt metallisation were studied. Our results show that Zirconium is a more suitable under layer than Titanium

Particle swarm optimization and spiral dynamic algorithm-based interval type-2 fuzzy logic control of triple-link inverted pendulum system: A comparative assessment

This paper presents investigations into the development of an interval type-2 fuzzy logic control (IT2FLC) mechanism integrated with particle swarm optimization and spiral dynamic algorithm. The particle swarm optimization and spiral dynamic algorithm are used for enhanced performance of the IT2FLC by finding optimised values for input and output controller gains and parameter values of IT2FLC membership function as comparison purpose in order to identify better solution for the system. A new model of triple-link inverted pendulum on two-wheels system, developed within SimWise 4D software environment and integrated with Matlab/Simulink for control purpose. Several tests comprising system stabilization, disturbance rejection and convergence accuracy of the algorithms are carried out to demonstrate the robustness of the control approach. It is shown that the particle swarm optimization-based control mechanism performs better than the spiral dynamic algorithm-based control in terms of system stability, disturbance rejection and reduce noise. Moreover, the particle swarm optimization-based IT2FLC shows better performance in comparison to previous research. It is envisaged that this system and control algorithm can be very useful for the development of a mobile robot with extended functionality

A Study On External Environment Of Business And Its Influence On Msmes In The Context Of Covid-19

Businesses across the globe has decided ‘just to survive apart from making huge profit’, from a global pandemic which has created huge disaster to economy of almost all countries in the world. In India pharmaceutical industry is improving its status day by day, on the other hand travel and tourism industry, entertainment sector, market for luxury products and services is deteriorating among which the drastic-hit is the MSMEs.This study aims at analysing various external factors influencing the performance of business especially during times of COVID-19 pandemic, those factors include political, social, cultural, economic, legal, technological, etc., The study aims at finding out those external factor and potential ways to recover from the losses incurred

Moral, wasteful, frugal, or thrifty? Identifying consumer identities to understand and manage pro-environmental behaviour

Moral motives are important for pro-environmental behavior. But such behavior is not only motivated by moral or environmental concerns. We examined what higher order motives, other than morality, may be important for understanding pro-environmental behavior, by studying consumer identities. In three studies (N = 877) four consumer identities were distinguished: moral, wasteful, frugal, and thrifty. Frugal and moral consumer identities were most salient and were the strongest predictors of pro-environmental behaviors, but in different ways. Frugality, which is related to, but distinct from thriftiness, was particularly important for behaviors associated with waste reduction of any kind (including money). The findings suggest that people adopt the same behavior for different reasons, in ways consistent with their consumer identities. People manage multiple consumer identities simultaneously, and environmental policy is likely to be more effective if it addresses these multiple identities
