Kiwi talent flow : a study of chartered accountants and business professionals overseas
New Zealanders have always had a propensity to travel overseas. The globalisation of the
world has seen an increase in the number of people who, having completed their education and
gained some work experience, set off on their overseas experience. Concern has been
expressed as to the potential “brain drain” that would result should these well-educated and
talented citizens remain overseas permanently. This research considers the propensity to
return of over 1,500 expatriate Kiwis working in the areas of accounting and finance. It
examines their demographics, attitudes, values, motivations, factors of attraction to, and
repulsion from, New Zealand and their concerns for change in New Zealand. It therefore
provides insights into the nature and purpose of this significant group of professionals resident
mainly in the United Kingdom and Australia. We find that less than half are likely to return to
New Zealand. This is because of the lack of career and business opportunities despite the
“pull” of family and relations in New Zealand
Magazine and reader constructions of 'metrosexuality' and masculinity: a membership categorisation analysis
Since the launch of men's lifestyle magazines in the 1980s, academic literature has predominantly focused on them as a cultural phenomenon arising from entrepreneurial and commercial initiatives and/or as cultural texts that proffer representations of masculinity such as 'new lad' and 'new dad'. This paper steps aside from the focus on culture and, instead, treats magazine content as a discursive space in which gender and sexuality are oriented to, negotiated, and accomplished within and beyond the magazine itself (i.e. through readers' responses). Specifically, membership categorisation analysis is deployed to explore how the relatively new (and perhaps alternative) category for men - 'metrosexual' - is presented and received. Our analysis suggests that masculinity concerns are central in debates about 'metrosexuality', with self-identified 'metrosexuals' invoking heterosexual prowess and self-respect on the one hand, and critics (e.g. selfidentified 'real men') lamenting 'metrosexuality' for its perceived effeminacy and lack of authenticity on the other. Implications for understanding contemporary masculinities are discussed
Superconducting-coil--resistor circuit with electric field quadratic in the current
It is shown for the first time that the observed [Phys. Lett. A 162 (1992)
105] potential difference Phi_t between the resistor and the screen surrounding
the circuit is caused by polarization of the resistor because of the kinetic
energy of the electrons of the superconducting coil. The proportionality of
Phi_t to the square of the current and to the length of the superconducting
wire is explained. It is pointed out that measuring Phi_t makes it possible to
determine the Fermi quasimomentum of the electrons of a metal resistor.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figur
Vortex stabilization in Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali atom gas
A quantized vortex in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), which is known to
be unstable intrinsically, is demonstrated theoretically to be stabilized by
the finite temperature effect. The mean-field calculation of Popov
approximation within the Bogoliubov theory is employed, giving rise to a
self-consistent solution for BEC confined by a harmonic potential. Physical
origin of this vortex stabilization is investigated. An equivalent effect is
also proved to be induced by an additional pinning potential at the vortex
center produced by a focused laser beam even at the lowest temperature. The
self-consistent solutions give detailed properties of a stable vortex, such as
the spatial profiles of the condensate and non-condensate, the particle current
density around the core, the whole excitation spectrum, and their temperature

Implementing nursing best practice guidelines: Impact on patient referrals
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although referring patients to community services is important for optimum continuity of care, referrals between hospital and community sectors are often problematic. Nurses are well positioned to inform patients about referral resources. The objective of this study is to describe the impact of implementing six nursing best practice guidelines (BPGs) on nurses' familiarity with patient referral resources and referral practices.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective before and after design was used. For each BPG topic, referral resources were identified. Information about these resources was presented at education sessions for nurses. Pre- and post-questionnaires were completed by a random sample of 257 nurses at 7 hospitals, 2 home visiting nursing services and 1 public health unit. Average response rates for pre- and post-implementation questionnaires were 71% and 54.2%, respectively. Chart audits were completed for three BPGs (n = 421 pre- and 332 post-implementation). Post-hospital discharge patient interviews were conducted for four BPGs (n = 152 pre- and 124 post-implementation).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were statistically significant increases in nurses' familiarity with resources for all BPGs, and self-reported referrals to specific services for three guidelines. Higher rates of referrals were observed for services that were part of the organization where the nurses worked. There was almost a complete lack of referrals to Internet sources. No significant differences between pre- and post-implementation referrals rates were observed in the chart documentation or in patients' reports of referrals.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Implementing nursing BPGs, which included recommendations on patient referrals produced mixed results. Nurses' familiarity with referral resources does not necessarily change their referral practices. Nurses can play a vital role in initiating and supporting appropriate patient referrals. BPGs should include specific recommendations on effective referral processes and this information should be tailored to the community setting where implementation is taking place.</p
Finite temperature mobility of a particle coupled to a fermion environment
We study numerically the finite temperature and frequency mobility of a
particle coupled by a local interaction to a system of spinless fermions in one
dimension. We find that when the model is integrable (particle mass equal to
the mass of fermions) the static mobility diverges. Further, an enhanced
mobility is observed over a finite parameter range away from the integrable
point. We present a novel analysis of the finite temperature static mobility

Parental cultural models and resources for understanding mathematical achievement in culturally diverse school settings
This paper proposes that the theoretical concept of cultural models can offer useful insights into parental involvement in their child’s mathematical achievement and the resources they use to go about gaining information in culturally diverse learning settings. This examination takes place within a cultural-developmental framework and draws on the notion of cultural models to explicate parental understandings of their child’s mathematics achievement and what resources are used to make sense of this. Three parental resources are scrutinized: (a) the teacher, (b) examination test results, and (c) constructions of child development. The interviews with 22 parents revealed some ambiguity around the interpretation of these resources by the parent, which was often the result of incongruent cultural models held between the home and the school. The resources mentioned are often perceived as being unambiguous but show themselves instead to be highly interpretive because of the diversity of cultural models in existence in culturally diverse settings. Parents who are in minority or marginalized positions tend to have difficulties in interpreting cultural models held by school, thereby disempowering them to be parentally involved in the way the school would like
