    Chimera States for Coupled Oscillators

    Arrays of identical oscillators can display a remarkable spatiotemporal pattern in which phase-locked oscillators coexist with drifting ones. Discovered two years ago, such "chimera states" are believed to be impossible for locally or globally coupled systems; they are peculiar to the intermediate case of nonlocal coupling. Here we present an exact solution for this state, for a ring of phase oscillators coupled by a cosine kernel. We show that the stable chimera state bifurcates from a spatially modulated drift state, and dies in a saddle-node bifurcation with an unstable chimera.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Local Passive Acoustic Monitoring of Narwhal Presence in the Canadian Arctic: A Pilot Project

    Long-term community-based monitoring of narwhals (Monodon monoceros) is needed because narwhals are important to local Inuit and are facing changes in their environment. We examined the suitability of passive acoustic recording for monitoring narwhals, using data gathered in the Canadian Arctic from an autonomous acoustic recorder (Repulse Bay, 2006) and a hand-held digital recorder (Koluktoo Bay, 2006 – 08). We found a relationship between the number of narwhals observed passing a fixed point and the number of calls heard. In addition, we found that an automated call detector could isolate segments of recording containing narwhal vocalizations over long recording periods containing non-target sound, thus decreasing the time spent on the analysis. Collectively, these results suggest that combining passive acoustic sampling with an automated call detector offers a useful approach for local monitoring of the presence and relative abundance of narwhals.La nécessité d’avoir un programme communautaire de surveillance à long terme des narvals (Monodon monoceros) s’avère évidente étant donné que les narvals revêtent de l’importance aux yeux des Inuits de la région et que leur environ­nement est en pleine évolution. Nous explorons la pertinence d’un programme de surveillance par acoustique passive pour les populations de narvals à partir de données récoltées dans l’Arctique canadien à l’aide d’une enregistreuse autonome (Repulse Bay, 2006) et d’une enregistreuse portable (Koluktoo Bay, 2006 – 2008). Grâce à des enregistrements accompagnés d’obser­vations sur le terrain, nous avons trouvé une corrélation entre le nombre de vocalisations entendues et le nombre de narvals observés. L’utilisation d’un détecteur automatique de vocalisations de narvals a permis d’isoler des segments d’enregis­trements contenant des vocalisations de narvals sur de longues périodes d’enregistrement contenant des sons non-ciblés, et ainsi diminuer le temps d’analyse. Ces résultats suggèrent que la combinaison de surveillance acoustique passive avec l’utili­sation d’un détecteur automatique offre une approche utile pour la surveillance locale de la présence et de l’abondance relative des narvals

    Radiolytic Hydrogen Production in the Subseafloor Basaltic Aquifer

    Hydrogen (H2) is produced in geological settings by dissociation of water due to radiation from radioactive decay of naturally occurring uranium (238U, 235U), thorium (232Th) and potassium (40K). To quantify the potential significance of radiolytic H2 as an electron donor for microbes within the South Pacific subseafloor basaltic aquifer, we use radionuclide concentrations of 43 basalt samples from IODP Expedition 329 to calculate radiolytic H2 production rates in basement fractures. The samples are from three sites with very different basement ages and a wide range of alteration types. U, Th, and K concentrations vary by up to an order of magnitude from sample to sample at each site. Comparison of our samples to each other and to the results of previous studies of unaltered East Pacific Rise basalt suggests that significant variations in radionuclide concentrations are due to differences in initial (unaltered basalt) concentrations (which can vary between eruptive events) and post-emplacement alteration. However, there is no clear relationship between alteration type and calculated radiolytic yields. Local maxima in U, Th, and K produce hotspots of H2production, causing calculated radiolytic rates to differ by up to a factor of 80 from sample to sample. Fracture width also greatly influences H2 production, where microfractures are hotspots for radiolytic H2 production. For example, H2 production rates normalized to water volume are 190 times higher in 1 μm wide fractures than in fractures that are 10 cm wide. To assess the importance of water radiolysis for microbial communities in subseafloor basaltic aquifers, we compare electron transfer rates from radiolysis to rates from iron oxidation in subseafloor basalt. Radiolysis appears likely to be a more important electron donor source than iron oxidation in old (\u3e10 Ma) basement basalt. Radiolytic H2 production in the volume of water adjacent to a square cm of the most radioactive SPG basalt may support as many as 1500 cells

    The Diffuse Emission and a Variable ULX in the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 3379

    A Chandra observation of the intermediate luminosity (M_B=-20) elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 resolves 75% of the X-ray emission within the central 5kpc into point sources. Spectral analysis of the remaining unresolved emission within the central 770pc indicates that 90% of the emission probably arises from undetected point sources, while 10% arises from thermal emission from kT=0.6keV gas. Assuming a uniform density distribution in the central region of the galaxy gives a gas mass of 5.0e5 Mo.Such a small amount of gas can be supplied by stellar mass loss in only 1.0e7 years. Thus, the gas must be accreting into the central supermassive black hole at a very low radiative efficiency as in the ADAF or RIAF models, or is being expelled in a galactic wind driven by the same AGN feedback mechanism as that observed in cluster cooling flows. If the gas is being expelled in an AGN driven wind, then the ratio of mechanical to radio power of the AGN must be 1.0e4, which is comparable to that measured in cluster cooling flows which have recently been perturbed by radio outbursts. The brightest point source in NGC 3379 is located 360pc from the central AGN with a peak luminosity of 3.5e39 ergs/s, which places it in the class of ultra-luminous X-ray point sources (ULX). Analysis of an archival ROSAT HRI observation of NGC 3379 shows that this source was at a comparable luminosity 5 years prior to the Chandra observation. During the Chandra observation, the source intensity smoothly varies by a factor of two with the suggestion of an 8-10 hour period

    Can children undergoing ophthalmologic examinations under anesthesia be safely anesthetized without using an IV line?

    To document that with proper patient and procedure selection, children undergoing general inhalational anesthesia for ophthalmologic exams (with or without photos, ultrasound, laser treatment, peri-ocular injection of chemotherapy, suture removal, and/or replacement of ocular prosthesis) can be safely anesthetized without the use of an intravenous (IV) line. Children are rarely anesthetized without IV access placement. We performed a retrospective study to determine our incidence of IV access placement during examinations under anesthesia (EUA) and the incidence of adverse events that required intraoperative IV access placement. Data collected from our operating room (OR) information system includes but is not limited to diagnosis, anesthesiologist, surgeon, and location of IV catheter (if applicable), patient's date of birth, actual procedure, and anesthesia/procedure times. We reviewed the OR and anesthetic records of children (>1 month and <10 years) who underwent EUAs between January 1, 2003 and May 31, 2009. We determined the percentage of children who were anesthetized without IV access placement, as well as the incidence of any adverse events that required IV access placement, intraoperatively. We analyzed data from 3196 procedures performed during a 77-month period. Patients' ages ranged from 1 month to 9 years. Overall, 92% of procedures were performed without IV access placement. Procedure duration ranged from 1-39 minutes. Reasons for IV access placement included parental preference for antinausea medication and/or attending preference for IV access placement. No child who underwent anesthesia without an IV line had an intraoperative adverse event requiring insertion of an IV line. Our data suggest that for children undergoing general anesthesia for ophthalmologic exams (with or without photos, ultrasound, laser treatment, intraocular injection of chemotherapy, suture removal, and/or replacement of ocular prosthesis), anesthesia can be safely conducted without placement of an IV line

    Measurements of one-point statistics in 21-cm intensity maps via foreground avoidance strategy

    Measurements of the one-point probability distribution function and higher-order moments (variance, skewness, and kurtosis) of the high-redshift 21-cm fluctuations are among the most directstatistical probes of the non-Gaussian nature ofstructure formation and evolution during re-ionization. However, contamination from astrophysical foregrounds and instrument systematics pose significant challenges in measuring these statistics in real observations. In this work, we use forward modelling to investigate the feasibility of measuring 21-cm one-point statistics through a foreground avoidance strategy. Leveraging the characteristic wedge-shape of the foregrounds in k-space, we apply a wedge-cut filtre that removes the foreground contaminated modes from a mock data set based on the Hydrogen Epoch of Re-ionization Array (HERA) instrument, and measure the one-point statistics from the image-space representation of the remaining non-contaminated modes. We experiment with varying degrees of wedge-cutting over different frequency bandwidths and find that the centre of the band is the least susceptible to bias from wedge-cutting. Based on this finding, we introduce a rolling filtre method that allows reconstruction of an optimal wedge-cut 21-cm intensity map over the full bandwidth using outputs from wedge-cutting over multiple sub-bands. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to show that HERA should be able to measure the rise in skewness and kurtosis near the end of re-ionization with the rolling wedge-cut method if foreground leakage from the Fourier transform window function can be controlled
