Comparison of Leafhopper Species Complexes in the Ground Cover of Sprayed and Unsprayed Peach Orchards in Michigan (Homoptera: Cicadellldae)

Two Michigan peach orchards were sampled for leafhoppers using a fixed-area ground sampling device attached to a D-vac®. Absolute abundance estimates indicated that routine tree insecticide applications greatly depressed leafhopper populations. This, and the fact that no resident, known vectors of the X-disease pathogen were detected, suggests that increasing insecticide applications to check the spread of the disease through vector control would be ineffective

Library Link Resolvers and Analytics: Using Analytics Tools to Identify Usage Trends and Access Problems with Electronic Resources in Libraries

    Get PDF
Analytics have become vital to exploring the use of websites in the library world. They allow us to discover who is using our sites, when they are using them, and how they are using them. I believe this data will only become more important as libraries continue to prove their worth in the digital world. However, there are some challenges with using analytics. One major issue is that some of the essential sites relating to the delivery of library materials do not actually belong to the library. One example of this is the link resolver, which attempts to connect patrons to electronic materials in various databases. This paper will detail the steps I took to add Google Analytics to our link resolver, 360 Link. I will provide examples of how I used Google Analytics to explore usage of online tools, to identify sources of citations, and to study errors

Linked Up: Using Free Tools to Maintain Access to E-resources

    Get PDF
No one will argue that the internet has a lot to offer our patrons. Library web sites and systems link to a variety of valuable electronic resources such as databases, e-journals, and educational web sites. Unfortunately, the digital world is ever-changing, and maintaining access to these resources is a real challenge for librarians. Link checkers can be a great tool for keeping URLs updated, but they were generally not designed with libraries in mind; they may run into issues with resources that have access limited by IP address, go through ezproxy, or begin sessions. This poster compares several free and/or open source link checkers and analyze how they can be adapted for use in libraries. The goal of this poster is to provide guidance to fellow librarians about the potential value and possible limitations of these tools

Implications of Play Behavior in Relation to Time Designated in the Kindergarten Curriculum

This study investigated the relationship between the duration of free play periods and the social and cognitive levels of play in kindergarten. The play of forty-one children in an elementary school in Saint Paul, Minnesota was observed during fifteen minute and thirty minute play sessions over a four week period using Rubin\u27s social-cognitive scale. It was hypothesized that the children would exhibit a higher percentage of mature play categories, an increase in social cognitive play behaviors, and a higher percentage of positive affect, relative to other forms of play during the longer play periods than during the shorter play sessions. Performing / tests confirmed this hypothesis in regard to significantly higher percentages of group dramatic play in the long periods. Qualitative observations were also completed through the use of two case studies during the twenty day investigation for the purpose of subjective observations. As expected these subjective pictures of play behavior further supported the notions of higher Ievel play activity and increased social behavior occurring in longer play sessions than shorter ones
