    Magnetically Suspended Linear Pulse Motor for Semiconductor Wafer Transfer in Vacuum Chamber

    This paper describes a magnetically suspended linear pulse motor for a semiconductor wafer transfer robot in a vacuum chamber. The motor can drive a wafer transfer arm horizontally without mechanical contact. In the construction of the magnetic suspension system, four pairs of linear magnetic bearings for the lift control are used for the guidance control as well. This approach allows us to make the whole motor compact in size and light in weight. The tested motor consists of a double-sided stator and a transfer arm with a width of 50 mm and a total length of 700 mm. The arm, like a ladder in shape, is designed as the floating element with a tooth width of 4 mm (a tooth pitch of 8 mm). The mover mass is limited to about 1.6 kg by adopting such an arm structure, and the ratio of thrust to mover mass reaches to 3.2 N/kg under a broad air gap (1 mm) between the stator teeth and the mover teeth. The performance testing was carried out with a transfer distance less than 450 mm and a transfer speed less than 560 mm/s. The attitude of the arm was well controlled by the linear magnetic bearings with a combined use, and consequently the repeatability on the positioning of the arm reached to about 2 micron. In addition, the positioning accuracy was improved up to about 30 micron through a compensation of the 128-step wave current which was used for the micro-step drive with a step increment of 62.5 micron

    A New Framework of Technology and Engineering Education Proposed by the Japan Society of Technology Education

    The Japan Society of Technology Education (JSTE), an academic society for leading technology education research in Japan, has proposed a new framework of technology and engineering education in 2021 to impact the next revision of the Japan's national curriculum. The proposal includes a triple-loop model of the engineering design process and a model of the problem-solving process in line with learners' developmental stages. It also proposes to incorporate the connections between physical and cyber technologies, and between technology and other disciplines in the scope of technology education. However, this proposal was written in Japanese only, is not translated in other language. In this report, we will report of the result of survey conducted in this project, and introduce the contents of the proposal with some practical examples

    Impact of Mild Paravalvular Regurgitation on Long- Term Clinical Outcomes After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

    The impact of mild paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) remains controversial. We evaluated the impact of mild PVR after TAVI on long-term clinical outcomes. We included patients who underwent TAVI for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis between December 2008 and June 2019 at 2 interna-tional centers and compared all-cause death between the group with mild PVR (group 1) and the group with none or trace PVR (group 2). PVR was categorized using a 3-class grading scheme, and patients with PVR >= moderate and those who were lost to follow-up were excluded. This retrospective analysis included 1,404 patients (mean age 81.7 +/- 6.5 years, 58.0% women). Three hundred fifty eight patients (25.5%) were classified into group 1 and 1,046 patients (74.5%) into group 2. At baseline, group 1 was older and had a lower body mass index, worse co-morbidities, and more severe aortic stenosis. To account for these differences, propensity score matching was performed, resulting in 332 matched pairs. Within these matched groups, during a mean follow-up of 3.2 years, group 1 had a significantly lower survival rate at 5 years (group 1: 62.0% vs group 2: 68.0%, log-rank p = 0.029, hazard ratio: 1.41 [95% confidence interval: 1.04 to 1.91]). In the matched cohort, patients with mild PVR had a significant 1.4-fold increased risk of mortality at 5 years after TAVI compared with those with none or trace PVR. Further studies with more patients are needed to evaluate the impact of longer-term outcomes.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc.
