Vibroscape analysis reveals acoustic niche overlap and plastic alteration of vibratory courtship signals in ground-dwelling wolf spiders
To expand the scope of soundscape ecology to encompass substrate-borne vibrations (i.e. vibroscapes), we analyzed the vibroscape of a deciduous forest floor using contact microphone arrays followed by automated processing of large audio datasets. We then focused on vibratory signaling of ground-dwelling Schizocosa wolf spiders to test for (i) acoustic niche partitioning and (ii) plastic behavioral responses that might reduce the risk of signal interference from substrate-borne noise and conspecific/heterospecific signaling. Two closely related species - S. stridulans and S. uetzi - showed high acoustic niche overlap across space, time, and dominant frequency. Both species show plastic behavioral responses - S. uetzi males shorten their courtship in higher abundance of substrate-borne noise, S. stridulans males increased the duration of their vibratory courtship signals in a higher abundance of conspecific signals, and S. stridulans males decreased vibratory signal complexity in a higher abundance of S. uetzi signals

Successes of an Engineering Residential College Program within an Emerging Residential Culture
Boise State University is in the process of transforming from a historically commuter campus into a metropolitan research university which includes a growing residential culture (currently 8% of students live in residence halls). First time, full time freshmen age 18 or younger have increased from 61% of the incoming class in 2000 to 72% of the incoming class in 2008. To support our growing residential culture, University Housing, in cooperation with six academic colleges, began the Residential College (RC) program in 2004. Key among the five current RC communities is the College of Engineering. The Engineering Residential College (ERC) admits first and second year students with declared majors in one of our six undergraduate programs (civil engineering, computer science, construction management, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering) and undeclared engineering. The 2007- 2008 academic year was the first during which an engineering faculty member lived in residence, the Faculty-in-Residence (FiR), with the 26 members of the ERC. The physical structure of the ERC supported collaborative work and study with student community members. Daily interaction of student ERC community members with the FiR and structured activities outside the classroom facilitated learning that enhanced engineering academics. In this paper, we discuss the qualitative life skills and quantitative academic successes of this living-learning community facilitated by a live-in engineering faculty member during the past three semesters and make recommendations for improving the overall ERC experience

You are cordially invited to participate in the Third Annual NWSA Convention— Women Respond to Racism —to be held May 31-June 4, 1981, at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
At this Convention we will examine the conjunction of racism and sexism from an interdisciplinary, multicultural perspective as well as in the context of, for example, community organtzmg, curriculum development, the media, and public policy. The Convention schedule includes a broad selection of workshops and panel discussions on subjects as diverse as nonracist and nonsexist curricular materials, race and sex desegregation, nineteenth-century Black women activists, organizing against sterilization abuse nationally and internationally, art by women of color, women and development in the Third World, literature, pornography, and demography. There will, of course, be sessions addressing the interests of all the NWSA caucuses: Lesbian, Third World, Student, Staff, PreK-12, and Community College
Controlled cardiac reoxygenation does not improve myocardial function following global myocardial ischemia
AbstractBackgroundIt has been shown that abrupt re-exposure of ischemic myocardium to oxygen can lead to increased peroxidative damage to myocytes (oxygen paradox). Controlled cardiac reoxygenation, as an adjunct to substrate-enhanced cardioplegia, has been shown to improve myocardial function and limit reperfusion injury when utilizing standardized hyperoxic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The objective of our study was to evaluate the effect of controlled reoxygenation on myocardial function following global ischemia employing normoxic CPB.Study designNineteen female swine (30–40kg) were placed on vented, normoxic CPB. They were subjected to 45–50min of unprotected global ischemia (aortic cross clamping) followed by 30min of controlled cardiac reperfusion utilizing substrate-enhanced cardioplegia. Group 1 maintained normoxic pO2 (O2 tension of 90–110mmHg). In Group 2, reoxygenation was titrated gradually and increased from venous to arterial levels (O2 tensions from 40 to 110mmHg over 15min). We measured coronary sinus blood samples for CK, CK-MB, nitric oxide, and conjugated dienes at baseline, 5min into the cardioplegic resuscitation, 5min after the cross clamp removal, and just prior to the termination of the study. Hearts were pathologically studied and scored for evidence of tissue peroxidation.ResultsAlthough not significantly different, Group 1 (normoxic reperfusion) animals were more likely to wean from CPB (p=0.141) and had a higher mean arterial pressure (p=0.556). In Group 1, conjugated dienes were significantly higher 5min into the resuscitative protocol (p=0.018) and at the termination of bypass (p=0.035). Five of six animals in Group 1 eventually attained normal sinus rhythm as opposed to three out of 13 in Group 2 (p=0.041). There was no significant difference in histology scoring between the two groups for tissue peroxidation.ConclusionThis study of controlled cardiac reoxygenation in a lethal ischemic swine model failed to demonstrate that the use of controlled reoxygenation on the myocardial function following global ischemia was better with maintained normoxic pO2 (with O2 tensions of 90–110mmHg) than when reoxygenation was titrated gradually and increased from venous to arterial levels (O2 tensions from 40 to 110mmHg over 15min)
