    Gifts from Exoplanetary Transits

    The discovery of transiting extrasolar planets has enabled us a number of interesting stduies. Transit photometry reveals the radius and the orbital inclination of transiting planets, and thereby we can learn the true mass and the density of respective planets by the combined information of radial velocity measurements. In addition, follow-up observations of transiting planets such as secondary eclipse, transit timing variations, transmission spectroscopy, and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect provide us information of their dayside temperature, unseen bodies in systems, planetary atmospheres, and obliquity of planetary orbits. Such observational information, which will provide us a greater understanding of extrasolar planets, is available only for transiting planets.     Sensor-based Knowledge Discovery from a Large Quantity of Situational Variables

    A new methodology called “sensor-based knowledge discovery”, which utilizes wearable sensors and statistical analysis, is proposed and evaluated. This methodology facilitates identifying new knowledge that can improve business outcome. It utilizes wearable sensors to unobtrusively capture people’s location, motion, and social interaction with others. The captured data is converted into multi-dimensional situational variables and then statistically analyzed to deliver a “rule set,” which forms the basis of new knowledge related to business outcome. The methodology was evaluated through a case study at a retail store. A hypothetical rule, that is, a particular area (a so-called “hot spot”) in the store where employee’s presence correlates with average sales per customer, was identified. Based on the identified rule, a measure to concentrate employees in that area was initiated. Consequently, increasing employees’ presence (“staying time”) in the hot spot by 70% increased average sales per customer by 15%. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of the methodology; namely, the new sensor-based knowledge discovery can improve actual business performance

    Extensive Bilateral Patellar Tendon Ossification in a Spinal Cord Injury Patient

    This is the first report of extensive bilateral patellar tendon ossification occurring over a prolonged time after a unilateral knee injury. An 84-year-old Japanese man with a spinal cord injury caused by a burst fracture of the T12 vertebra presented with a bony hard prominence on the left knee, which was injured in a traffic accident when he was 77 years old. Radiography revealed extensive ossification of the bilateral patellar tendons. We review the English literature with a focus on the localization of bilateral heterotopic ossification of the knee in patients who had a central nervous system injury

    Cellular function of osteocytes in normal and αklotho-deficient mice

    During the last decade, osteocyte-derived factors i.e., sclerostin, dentin matrix protein-1, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) that reduces serum phosphate concentration by mediating FGF receptor 1c/αklotho in the kidney, have been highlighted for osteocytes’ fine-turned regulation on bone remodeling and phosphate homeostasis. Osteocytes are interconnected through gap junctions between their cytoplasmic processes, and thereby, build upon the functional syncytia, referred to as the osteocytic lacunar-canalicular system (OLCS). Osteocytes appear to communicate surrounding osteocytes and osteoblasts by means of two possible pathways of molecular transport throughout the OLCS : One is a passageway of their cytoplasmic processes, and the other is a pericellular space in the osteocytic canaliculi. The regularly-oriented OLCS in mature compact bone appears to efficiently serve for molecular transport, mechanosensing and targeted bone remodeling that would erase microdamages in bone. In a disrupted signaling state of FGF23/αklotho, serum concentration of phosphate would be markedly-elevated. Despite highly-elevated serum phosphate, αklotho -deficient mice revealed defective mineralization in bone matrix. OLCS in αklotho -deficient mice were irregularly-distributed and the connectivity of cytoplasmic processes of osteocytes was very poor, so that osteocytes did not seem to form functional syncytia. Therefore, osteocytes’function cooperated with other bone cells, rather than serum concentration of calcium/phosphate, and this seems to play a central role in maintaining bone mineralization.     Relationship between changes in quality of life and genitourinary toxicity grade after brachytherapy with I-125 alone for localised prostate cancer

    Background: The relationship between the grading of toxicities based on toxicity criteria and longitudinal changes in quality of life (QOL) scores after permanent prostate brachytherapy (PPB) for localized prostate cancer remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate these relationships. Materials and methods: We assessed 107 patients treated with PPB using Iodine-125 alone from May 2007 to April 2010. Disease-specific QOL scores before PPB and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after PPB were retrospectively evaluated with the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC), focusing on urinary domains. Toxicities were graded using the Radiation therapy oncology group and the European organization for research and treatment of cancer toxicity criteria. Results: The median follow-up duration was 116 (range 18–148) months. Thirty-four patients (31.8%) developed grade ≥ 2 acute genitourinary (GU) toxicities; six (5.6%) developed grade ≥ 2 late GU toxicities. The general urinary domain score dropped significantly at 1 month (77.1 ± 14.1) post-PPB compared to the baseline score (92.2 ± 8.2), and then gradually returned to the baseline level by 12 months (93.7 ± 8.3) post-PPB. Reductions in the general urinary domain scores, including its subscale scores at 1, 3, and 6-months post-PPB were significantly greater among patients with grade ≥ 2 GU toxicity than among those with grade 0–1 GU toxicity. Changes in urinary domain scores demonstrated a close relationship with acute GU toxicity grades after PPB. Conclusions: Longitudinal assessments of the EPIC QOL scores provided additional information regarding time-course changes in GU toxicities after PPB.

    Effects of Metoclopramide Hydrochloride, a D2-Selective Dopamine Receptor Antagonist, on the Fast Oscillation of the Electrooculogram

    Fast oscillation (FO) of an electrooculogram (EOG) was recorded in both eyes of 10 healthy volunteers before and after administration of metoclopramide hydrochloride (MTCL), a D2-selective dopamine receptor antagonist, paying particular attention to sex concerning sensitivity to dopamine in young subjects. Healthy volunteers were divided into male and female groups; 5 males (10 eyes) aged 21 to 23 years (average, 21.8 years) and 5 females (10 eyes) aged 19 to 25 years (average, 21.8 years). As an FO parameter, the dfFO (the averaged difference in ?V between maximum amplitude in the dark period and minimum amplitude in the light period during FO measurement) was evaluated. The mean level of dfFO significantly increased between phase A (the initial 10 min before intravenous injection of 10 mg of MTCL) and phase B (10 min after the injection) in the male and female groups (P < 0.01 and P < 0.025) and between phase A and phase C (the additional 10 min after the injection) in both groups (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). The mean level of dfFO in the female group was significantly higher than that of the male group in phase B (P < 0.05). As a control, the experimental procedure was performed with physiological saline administration, and no changes were observed. The data suggest that there exists some difference between young males and females generation concerning sensitivity to dopamine and that young females may show a higher-than-male sensitivity to dopamine in the occurrence of FO potential

    Strategic use of new generation antidepressants for depression: SUN(^_^) D protocol update and statistical analysis plan

    Background: SUN(^_^)D, the Strategic Use of New generation antidepressants for Depression, is an assessor-blinded, parallel-group, multicenter pragmatic mega-trial to examine the optimum treatment strategy for the first- and second-line treatments for unipolar major depressive episodes. The trial has three steps and two randomizations. Step I randomization compares the minimum and the maximum dosing strategy for the first-line antidepressant. Step II randomization compares the continuation, augmentation or switching strategy for the second-line antidepressant treatment. Step III is a naturalistic continuation phase. The original protocol was published in 2011, and we hereby report its updated protocol including the statistical analysis plan. Results: We implemented two important changes to the original protocol. One is about the required sample size, reflecting the smaller number of dropouts than had been expected. Another is in the organization of the primary and secondary outcomes in order to make the report of the main trial results as pertinent and interpretable as possible for clinical practices. Due to the complexity of the trial, we plan to report the main results in two separate reports, and this updated protocol and the statistical analysis plan have laid out respective primary and secondary outcomes and their analyses. We will convene the blind interpretation committee before the randomization code is broken. Conclusion: This paper presents the updated protocol and the detailed statistical analysis plan for the SUN(^_^)D trial in order to avoid reporting bias and data-driven results.     金沢大学理工研究域機械工学系Wastewaters from oil refinery factories often contain high concentrations of sulphide and the pH is over 12. Sulphide in wastewater causes the problems of the odor, toxicity and oxygen demand. We have studied an efficient biological process to oxidize sulphide to sulphate at neutral pH. A method to acclimate sulphur bacteria from activated sludge of sewage treatment plant at neutral pH by synthetic wastewater containing thiosulphate and the thiosulphate removal rate by the sulphur bacteria were examined.Sulphur bacteria could be acclimated from activated sludge of sewage treatment plant for about 10 days. The thiosulphate removal rate by the sulphur bacteria was from 350 to 600 mg S2O32-·g VSS-1·h-1 under the neutral pH when the water temperature was from 20°C to 35°C. And the thiosulphate removal rate was 150 mg S2O32-·g VSS-1·h-1 at 5°C. The sulphur bacteria are thought to be bacillus and maintained good settleability even at 5°C. The biological process using the sulphur bacteria acclimated from activated sludge could remove both sulphide of 200 mg·l-1 and thiosulphate of 600 mg·l-1under the HRT of 3 hours and the water temperature of 5°C
