Quantum fluctuations of classical skyrmions in quantum Hall Ferromagnets

In this article, we discuss the effect of the zero point quantum fluctuations to improve the results of the minimal field theory which has been applied to study %SMG the skyrmions in the quantum Hall systems. Our calculation which is based on the semiclassical treatment of the quantum fluctuations, shows that the one-loop quantum correction provides more accurate results for the minimal field theory.Comment: A few errors are corrected. Two-hundred seventy-four patients with primary hyperparathyroidism had selective removal of enlarged parathyroid glands. Biopsies were taken from all parathyroid glands. Normal-size glands were not resected irrespective of their histological appearance. After a mean follow-up of 13.5 years the rates of persistent and recurrent hyperparathyroidism were, respectively, 3.6% and 0.7%. Transient and permanent hypoparathyroidism occurred in 24% and 2.5% of the patients. The microscopic appearance of enlarged glands and of biopsies taken from normal-size glands were reviewed by two pathologists. Normal parathyroid glands were distinguished from abnormal glands fairly accurately (sensitivity 93%, specificity 80%). Microscopic classification of abnormal parathyroid glands as adenomas or hyperplastic glands correlated poorly with the gross classification as single or multigland disease. Flow cytometric DNA analysis of paraffin embedded parathyroid tissue showed significant differences for DNA index, % S-phase and % G2M (p<0.001). Differentiating single from multigland disease by means of DNA analysis was not possible. In conclusion, removal of only enlarged parathyroid glands results in acceptable rates of persistent and recurrent hyperparathyroidism. Biopsies should only be taken sparingly to prevent transient and permanent hypoparathyroidism. Microscopic examination and flow cytometric DNA analysis can differentiate normal from abnormal parathyroid glands but are unable to differentiate abnormal glands into single or multigland disease

Aspirin: A review of its neurobiological properties and therapeutic potential for mental illness

    Get PDF
There is compelling evidence to support an aetiological role for inflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress (O&NS), and mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathophysiology of major neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). These may represent new pathways for therapy. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is an irreversible inhibitor of both cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2, It stimulates endogenous production of anti-inflammatory regulatory 'braking signals', including lipoxins, which dampen the inflammatory response and reduce levels of inflammatory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin (IL)--6, but not negative immunoregulatory cytokines, such as IL-4 and IL-10. Aspirin can reduce oxidative stress and protect against oxidative damage. Early evidence suggests there are beneficial effects of aspirin in preclinical and clinical studies in mood disorders and schizophrenia, and epidemiological data suggests that high-dose aspirin is associated with a reduced risk of AD. Aspirin, one of the oldest agents in medicine, is a potential new therapy for a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, and may provide proof-of-principle support for the role of inflammation and O&NS in the pathophysiology of this diverse group of disorders

The magnetic mass of transverse gluon, the B-meson weak decay vertex and the triality symmetry of octonion

With an assumption that in the Yang-Mills Lagrangian, a left-handed fermion and a right-handed fermion both expressed as quaternion make an octonion which possesses the triality symmetry, I calculate the magnetic mass of the transverse self-dual gluon from three loop diagram, in which a heavy quark pair is created and two self-dual gluons are interchanged. The magnetic mass of the transverse gluon depends on the mass of the pair created quarks, and in the case of charmed quark pair creation, the magnetic mass mmagm_{mag} becomes approximately equal to TcT_c at T=Tc∌1.14ΛMSˉ∌260T=T_c\sim 1.14\Lambda_{\bar{MS}}\sim 260MeV. A possible time-like magnetic gluon mass from two self-dual gluon exchange is derived, and corrections in the B-meson weak decay vertices from the two self-dual gluon exchange are also evaluated.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure

Comparing endovenous laser ablation, foam sclerotherapy, and conventional surgery for great saphenous varicose veins

    Get PDF
BackgroundMany case series have been published on treatments of varicose veins, but comparative randomized controlled trials remain sparse.ObjectiveTo compare the anatomic success rate, frequency of major complications, and quality-of-life improvement of endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS), and conventional surgery (CS), after 1-year follow-up.MethodsA total of 240 consecutive patients with primary symptomatic great saphenous vein reflux were randomized to EVLA, UGFS, or CS, consisting of high ligation and short stripping. Primary outcome was anatomic success defined as obliteration or absence of the treated vein on ultrasound examination after 1 year. Secondary outcomes were complications, improvement of the “C” class of the CEAP classification, and improvement of disease-specific (Chronic Venous Insufficiency Quality-of-Life Questionnaire) and general (EuroQol 5) quality-of-life scores.ResultsMore than 80% of the study population was classified as C2 or C3 venous disease. After 1 year, the anatomic success rate was highest after EVLA (88.5%), followed by CS (88.2%) and UGFS (72.2%) (P < .001). The complication rate was low and comparable between treatment groups. All groups showed significant (P < .001) improvement of EuroQol 5 and Chronic Venous Insufficiency Quality-of-Life Questionnaire scores after therapy; 84.3% of all treated patients showed an improvement of the “C” of the CEAP classification.ConclusionsAfter 1-year follow-up, EVLA is as effective as CS and superior to UGFS according to occlusion on ultrasound duplex. Quality of life improves after treatment in all groups significantly
