    Get PDF
One hundred and eighty 7-week-old laying quail were fed various diets over a 12-week period. The diets included a control diet (without essential oil mixture (EOM) or antibiotics (ANTs)), a basal diet including EOM (24 mg/kg feed), and a basal diet including an ANT (avilamycin, 10 mg/kg feed). Each treatment comprised 4 replications with 4 cages (15 quail per cage), amounting to 60 quail per treatment group. Diets (in mash form) and water were provided for ad libitum consumption. EOM consisted of 6 different essential oils derived from the following herbs: oregano (Origanum sp.), laurel leaf (Laurus nobilis L.), sage leaf (Salvia triloba L.), myrtle leaf (Myrtus communis), fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare), and citrus peel (Citrus sp.). In comparison with the control diet, adding supplements such as EOM and ANTs to the basal diet increased egg production in quail (P<0.001). However, egg production was similar between EOM and ANT treatment groups. Moreover, there were no differences between the treatment groups with regard to egg weight. Feed intake was not affected by EOM or ANT supplementation, whereas feed conversion ratio was significantly improved by EOM and ANT supplementation. Thus, we concluded that EOM has beneficial effects as a dietary supplement on egg production and feed conversion ratio

Leukocyte Responses to Acute Heat Stress in Turkey Toms Either Fed Restricted or Ad Libitum During Growth Period

    No full text
The effect of environmental stressor, climatic or nutritional, on avian leukocyte has been widely considered in anumber of researches. Leucocyte responses are considered as better indicators of stress. Heterophil:lymphocyte(H:L) ratio in the avian blood refers to stress status only when mild to moderate stress exist. However, extremestress conditions result in a heterophenia and basophilia. Several reports showed that food restriction resulted insignificant basophilia in broilers and ducks except with turkeys. The effects of climatic changes or foodrestriction on turkeys have not received a high level of attention. The food restriction is not commonly used inturkey production except in compensatory growth studies and breeders. Turkeys are also known to be lesssensitive to heat stress due to better heat dissipation from their relatively large wattles. However, economiclosses in poultry production due to acute heat waves during summer season are of importance in many parts ofTurkey. Therefore, this study investigated the differential of leucocyte cell counts, H:L ratio, and bodytemperatures of turkey toms close to marketing age under acute heat exposure.A total of 28 commercial heavy line turkey toms which had been subjected to two different feeding regimeneither restricted (intermittent) including consequent two h of on-feed and off-feed periods that give a total of 8 hfeeding time in each day or ad libitum till 15 wk were used in the present study. At 15 wk of age, 14 birds fromeach feeding group were randomly chosen, were bled, and rectal temperatures were measured. Birds were gentlymoved to warm room where mean temperature and humidity was 31.85±0.31 °C and 51.19±0.70% during the 2h of heat exposure of turkey toms. Heat stressed birds were bled for leucocyte counts and body temperatureswere measured.Feeding treatment which was used during rearing period did not affect the leucocyte response and bodytemperature of turkey toms. Body temperature, heterophils, basophils, and monocyte proportions , and H:L ratioincreased with acute heat exposure while the lymphocytes lowered. Eosinophil remained unchanged under acuteheat stress. In conclusion, significant arise in basophil numbers reported here and lowered lymphocytes accompanied withhigh H:L ratios showed the severe effect of heat stress on turkey toms, either fed restricted or ad libitum duringgrowth period, under the experimental conditions .Keywords: turkey tom, heat stress, leucocyte, H:L ratio, body temperatur

This experiment was performed to determine the effects of dietary ascorbic acid (ASA) supplementation oil blood components, leukocyte and tonic immobility of male turkeys under summer conditions. A total of 120 one-day-old male turkeys were fed with three different diets. The experimental diets were: control without ASA (ASA-0), 150 mg of ASA/kg (ASA-150) and 300 mg of ASA/kg (ASA-300) of diet. The turkeys received the experimental diets for IS weeks. Diets ill mash form and water were provided ad libitum. In the ASA-150 and ASA-300 groups, the eosinophile and basophile ratios were higher than those of the ASA-0 group at 12 weeks of age (P 0.05). Both dietary ASA levels caused a quadratic decrease in serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) (P < 0.05), whereas dietary ASA caused a finer increase in serum iron concentration of turkey. (P < 0.05). Serum glucose, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), total protein, albumin. globulin. lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), urea, Uric acid and alpha amylase were not affected by the addition of ASA to the diets (P < 0.05). As a conclusion, blood haematological profile, serum biochemical components and tonic immobility of turkeys were not significantly affected by dietary ASA levels at chronic high summer temperatures in general. and, therefore, there is no need for ASA supplementation in turkeys' diets under summer temperatures that do not exceed 31.7 degrees C

WOS: 000430889900005PubMed ID: 29707434Objectives. Osteoarthritis (OA) and vitamin D deficiency are common health conditions in older people. Whether vitamin D concentration is associated with knee OA is controversial. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between serum concentrations of vitamin D and osteoarthritic knee pain. Subjects and Methods. Vitamin D concentrations were measured with the 25 hydroxyvitamin D test in patients presenting with clinical symptoms of primary knee osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis was graded on the Kellgren-Lawrence grading scale from anteroposterior and lateral radiographs. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were recorded. Patients completed a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS) for indicating pain and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC). Vitamin D concentration was defined as severely deficient (<10 ng/mL), insufficient (10 to 19 ng/mL), or normal (20 to 50 ng/mL). Results. Of 149 patients (133 women), the mean age was 63.6 years. Mean vitamin D concentration was 11.53 ng/mL, and 90% patients were vitamin D deficient. Mean WOMAC score was 57.2, and VAS pain score was 7.5. Kellgren-Lawrence grade was 2 for 10 patients, grade 3 for 61, and grade 4 for 88. Mean BMI was 33.4. Mean values of VAS, WOMAC, and BMI did not differ by vitamin D status. Conclusion. Serum vitamin D concentration is not associated with knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis
