The Effects of Self-Monitoring Checklists and Performance Feedback on Study Skills of College Students with Disabilities

    Get PDF
This study utilized a multiple baseline design across two study skills to examine the impact of a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback on the implementation of study skills for seven college students with disabilities. The accuracy with which students performed study skills was calculated as a percentage based on the number of correct study skill steps completed during a college course divided by the total number of treatment steps. The results show that three of the seven students markedly increased the accurate use of the notetaking and study guide skills immediately when provided with a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback, whereas the other four students had more variable results. However, following a booster session, all students\u27 performance increased following intervention. Results were socially validated by students who indicated they were generally satisfied with the intervention and found it to be useful when studying for the college class

How can we educate future forensic scientists?

Over the past two decades, in particular, the field of forensic science has experienced a significant development bringing this ever-evolving field to the public’s attention. Forensic science education has undergone a rapid expansion in the number of courses and the number of students enrolling. This literature review aims to research the past 20 years of literature to understand what education is and has been for science as well as looking into future techniques and learning tools that may be useful for the future 20 years in particular for the future of forensic education. In science education, the classic didactic lecture and inquiry-based learning has transitioned to more technological and hands-on approaches like active lectures, practical learning, virtual reality, online learning, and problem-based learning. Literature around forensic education is very minimal with virtual reality, gamification, and online learning being the approaches commonly mentioned as the new way forward

Cast Off Body and Mind: Realization of the Self in Phenomenology and Soto Zen

Throughout much of the history of Western philosophy, the works of non-Western philosophers were often categorized as belonging to that of mystics and was not worthy of rational discourse. This attitude began to change in the mid-19th century with philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhaur, but even more so in the 20th century as exploration of Eastern philosophy began in full earnest. Of particular note is Martin Heidegger’s examination of Buddhism in his phenomenological work. Heidegger is not the only phenomenologist to have connections to Buddhism. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the leading French phenomenologist of the 20th century, argued that the body was not only necessary for experiencing the world, but also for the attainment of authentic self-hood. In a similar vein, centuries earlier, the Zen master Dogen was formulating a philosophy of the body that closely corresponds with what Merleau-Ponty discusses in his seminal work The Phenomenology of Perception by claiming that the body was the necessary component of attainment of enlightenment through its practice of zazen, or seated meditation. Drawing from these two philosophers, and contemporary commentators, this paper argues that the divide between philosophy in the East and West is not as great as one might think. By providing a space for dialogue between Dogen and Merleau-Ponty, we see how their philosophies discourse with one another, especially in regards to their understanding of the body’s importance in realization of authentic self-hood. And in providing this space, the foundations of a greater discourse between East and West may begin
