Model Robust Calibration: Method and Application to Electronically-Scanned Pressure Transducers
This article presents the application of a recently developed statistical regression method to the controlled instrument calibration problem. The statistical method of Model Robust Regression (MRR), developed by Mays, Birch, and Starnes, is shown to improve instrument calibration by reducing the reliance of the calibration on a predetermined parametric (e.g. polynomial, exponential, logarithmic) model. This is accomplished by allowing fits from the predetermined parametric model to be augmented by a certain portion of a fit to the residuals from the initial regression using a nonparametric (locally parametric) regression technique. The method is demonstrated for the absolute scale calibration of silicon-based pressure transducers
Visual Text Correction
Videos, images, and sentences are mediums that can express the same
semantics. One can imagine a picture by reading a sentence or can describe a
scene with some words. However, even small changes in a sentence can cause a
significant semantic inconsistency with the corresponding video/image. For
example, by changing the verb of a sentence, the meaning may drastically
change. There have been many efforts to encode a video/sentence and decode it
as a sentence/video. In this research, we study a new scenario in which both
the sentence and the video are given, but the sentence is inaccurate. A
semantic inconsistency between the sentence and the video or between the words
of a sentence can result in an inaccurate description. This paper introduces a
new problem, called Visual Text Correction (VTC), i.e., finding and replacing
an inaccurate word in the textual description of a video. We propose a deep
network that can simultaneously detect an inaccuracy in a sentence, and fix it
by replacing the inaccurate word(s). Our method leverages the semantic
interdependence of videos and words, as well as the short-term and long-term
relations of the words in a sentence. In our formulation, part of a visual
feature vector for every single word is dynamically selected through a gating
process. Furthermore, to train and evaluate our model, we propose an approach
to automatically construct a large dataset for VTC problem. Our experiments and
performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed method provides very good
results and also highlights the general challenges in solving the VTC problem.
To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first of its kind for the Visual
Text Correction task
Evaluation of the Choice of GP Practice Pilot, 2012-13
The choice of general practice pilot began in April 2012 for 12 months and allowed patients to choose to seek care from any volunteer general practice in four volunteer Primary Care Trust (PCT) areas of the country (Westminster, Salford, Manchester and Nottingham City) without being restricted by practice boundaries. Patients could either register with a pilot practice as an out of area (OoA) patient, or be seen as a ‘day patient’, while remaining registered with their original practice. The aim of the evaluation was to describe the uptake of the pilot scheme, and give an early indication of its potential costs and benefits for participating practices and patients over a 12-month period, recognising that it would not be possible to quantify costs and benefits definitively over such a short time

Fluoride-Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor (FHR) Using British Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (AGR) Refueling Technology and Decay Heat Removal Systems That Prevent Salt Freezing
The FHR uses graphite-matrix coated-particle fuel (same as high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs)) and a clean liquid salt coolant. It delivers heat to industry or the power cycle at temperatures between 600 and 700°C with higher average heat delivery temperatures than other reactors. The liquid- salt-coolant melting point is above 450°C. The high minimum temperatures present refueling challenges and require special features to control temperatures—avoiding excessively high temperatures and freezing of the coolant that could impact decay heat cooling systems. We describe herein a pre-conceptual FHR design that addresses many of these challenges by adopting features from the British AGR and alternative decay heat cooling systems. The basis for specific design choices are described.
The AGRs are carbon-dioxide cooled and graphite-moderated reactors that use cylindrical fuel subassemblies with vertical refueling at 650°C—meeting FHR high-temperature refueling requirements. The 14 AGRs have operated for many decades. The AGR uses 8 cylindrical fuel sub-assemblies each a meter tall coupled axially together by a metal stringer to create a long fuel assembly. The stringer assemblies are in vertical channels in a graphite core that provides neutron moderation. This geometric core design is compatible with an FHR using graphite-matrix coated-particle fuel. The FHR uses a once- through fuel cycle. The design minimizes used nuclear fuel volumes relative to other FHR and HTGR designs. The primary system is inside a secondary liquid-salt-filled tank that (1) provides an added heat sink for decay heat, (2) helps ensure no freezing of primary system salt, and (3) helps ensure no major fuel failures in a beyond-design-basis accident. The refueling standpipes above each stringer fuel assembly in the AGR core with modifications can be used in an FHR for refueling and provide efficient heat transfer between the primary system and the secondary liquid-salt-filled tank. The passive decay heat removal system uses heat-pipes that turn on and off at a preset temperature to avoid overheating the core in a reactor accident and avoid freezing the salt coolant as decay heat decreases after reactor shutdown

Overview of Evidence of Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance in the Food Chain
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem. Bacteria carrying resistance genes can be transmitted between humans, animals and the environment. There are concerns that the widespread use of antimicrobials in the food chain constitutes an important source of AMR in humans, but the extent of this transmission is not well understood. The aim of this review is to examine published evidence on the links between antimicrobial use (AMU) in the food chain and AMR in people and animals. The evidence showed a link between AMU in animals and the occurrence of resistance in these animals. However, evidence of the benefits of a reduction in AMU in animals on the prevalence of resistant bacteria in humans is scarce. The presence of resistant bacteria is documented in the human food supply chain, which presents a potential exposure route and risk to public health. Microbial genome sequencing has enabled the establishment of some links between the presence of resistant bacteria in humans and animals but, for some antimicrobials, no link could be established. Research and monitoring of AMU and AMR in an integrated manner is essential for a better understanding of the biology and the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance
Utilization Patterns of IV Iron and Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agents in Anemic Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A Multihospital Study
Intravenous (IV) iron and Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agents (ESAs) are recommended for anemia management in chronic kidney disease (CKD). This retrospective cohort study analyzed utilization patterns of IV iron and ESA in patients over 18 years of age admitted to University Health System Hospitals with a primary or secondary diagnosis of CKD between January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2008. A clustered binomial logistic regression using the GEE methodology was used to identify predictors of IV iron utilization. Only 8% (n = 6678) of CKD patients on ESA therapy received IV iron supplementation in university hospitals. Those receiving iron used significantly less amounts of ESAs. Patient demographics (age, race, primary payer), patient clinical conditions (admission status, severity of illness, dialysis status), and physician specialty were identified as predictors of IV iron use in CKD patients. Use of IV iron with ESAs was low despite recommendations from consensus guidelines. The low treatment rate of IV iron represents a gap in treatment practices and signals an opportunity for healthcare improvement in CKD anemic patients
Interactive Decision Support for Risk Management: a Qualitative Evaluation in Cancer Genetic Counselling Sessions
Genetic counselling for inherited susceptibility to cancer involves communication of a significant amount of information about possible consequences of different interventions. This study explores counsellors' attitudes to computer software designed to aid this process. Eight genetic counsellors used the software with actors playing patients. Clinicians' rating of expected patient satisfaction, content, accuracy, timeliness, format, overall value, ease of use, effect on the patient–provider relationship and effect on clinician's performance were evaluated via qualitative and quantitative analysis of interviews, training tasks and questionnaires. Most counsellors found the software effective. Concerns related to possible impact on consultation dynamics and content. Participants suggested countering these through appropriate new counselling skills and selective use of the computer. The REACT software could provide effective support for genetic risk management counselling
Young Adult Smokers\u27 Neural Response to Graphic Cigarette Warning Labels
Introduction: The study examined young adult smokers\u27 neural response to graphic warning labels (GWLs) on cigarette packs using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
Methods: Nineteen young adult smokers (M age 22.9, 52.6% male, 68.4% non-white, M 4.3 cigarettes/day) completed pre-scan, self-report measures of demographics, cigarette smoking behavior, and nicotine dependence, and an fMRI scanning session. During the scanning session participants viewed cigarette pack images (total 64 stimuli, viewed 4 s each) that varied based on the warning label (graphic or visually occluded control) and pack branding (branded or plain packaging) in an event-related experimental design. Participants reported motivation to quit (MTQ) in response to each image using a push-button control. Whole-brain blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional images were acquired during the task.
Results: GWLs produced significantly greater self-reported MTQ than control warnings (p \u3c .001). Imaging data indicate stronger neural activation in response to GWLs than the control warnings at a cluster-corrected threshold p \u3c .001 in medial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, medial temporal lobe, and occipital cortex. There were no significant differences in response to warnings on branded versus plain cigarette packages.
Conclusions: In this sample of young adult smokers, GWLs promoted neural activation in brain regions involved in cognitive and affective decision-making and memory formation and the effects of GWLs did not differ on branded or plain cigarette packaging. These findings complement other recent neuroimaging GWL studies conducted with older adult smokers and with adolescents by demonstrating similar patterns of neural activation in response to GWLs among young adult smokers
UK Large-scale Wind Power Programme from 1970 to 1990: the Carmarthen Bay experiments and the Musgrove Vertical-Axis Turbines
This article describes the development of the Musgrove Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)
concept, the UK ‘Carmarthen Bay’ wind turbine test programme, and UK government’s wind
power programme to 1990. One of the most significant developments in the story of British
wind power occurred during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, with the development of the
Musgrove vertical axis wind turbine and its inclusion within the UK Government’s wind
turbine test programme. Evolving from a supervisor’s idea for an undergraduate project at
Reading University, the Musgrove VAWT was once seen as an able competitor to the
horizontal axis wind systems that were also being encouraged at the time by both the UK
government and the Central Electricity Generating Board, the then nationalised electricity
utility for England and Wales. During the 1980s and 1990s the most developed Musgrove
VAWT system, along with three other commercial turbine designs was tested at
Carmarthen Bay, South Wales as part of a national wind power test programme. From these
developmental tests, operational data was collected and lessons learnt, which were
