    Astronomical Limitations on Detecting Habitable Planets Beyond the Solar System

    As a possible method of detecting an extrasolar planet, astrometric spectroscopic, and photometric methods are considered. Interest has been focused on the search for a planet whose physical conditions appear to favor biological evolution that could lead to the development of life as advanced as that on the Earth. In order to avoid speculative arguments, the set of assumptions introduced consists of only those that are acceptable at the present stage of our scientific knowledge. These basic assumptions are: (1) The speed of biological evolution is about the same as on the Earth; (2) a planet of our interest has to be within a certain distance from the parent star, so that the planetary temperature can be kept on a range where life can exist; and (3) atmospheric conditions, and the chemical composition of the air, are similar to those on the Earth and such conditions depend only on the ratio of mean thermal to escape velocities. Theoretically computed planetary models are used in determining mass-radius relations. It has been found that the photometric method is far superior to the other two. In fact, it is the only means of detecting a planet of the proposed kind, and as a consequence, the conclusions do not strongly depend on the basic assumptions. Since the probability of success in the search appears to be quite high and various by-products are anticipated, the author proposes that an extensive photometric survey of late type stars be planned before much effort is expended on any radio astronomical search

    Antioxidant effects of antioxidant biofactor on reactive oxygen species in human gingival fibroblasts

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of antioxidant biofactor (AOB) on reactive oxygen species (ROS). Generation of superoxide radical (O2•−) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) was determined using an electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trapping method. AOB was added at different concentrations to these free radical generating systems. The generation of both O2•− and •OH was scavenged by the addition of AOB in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicate that AOB has strong antioxidant properties against these radicals. We further investigated the anti-oxidative effect of AOB on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). HGFs were treated for 3 h with α-MEM containing a combination of AOB and H2O2 (AOB + H2O2 group), containing H2O2 (H2O2 group), or containing AOB alone (AOB group). Non-stimulated HGFs were used as a control group. The number of surviving cells was in the order of the AOB group > control group > AOB + H2O2 group > H2O2 group. The level of expression of type I collagen mRNA and production of collagen were also in the order of the AOB group > control group > AOB + H2O2 group > H2O2 group. In conclusion, our results suggest that AOB may protect HGFs against oxidative stress by reducing stress-induced ROS

    Photoelectro-Photometric Survey of Night Sky Conditions in the Vicinity of Iowa City

    During the summer 1962, a systematic survey of night sky conditions in the vicinity of Iowa City was carried out for the purpose of selecting the best site for the proposed research observatory of the State University of Iowa. A photoelectric photometer was attached to the Newtonian focus of an 11-inch reflector whose equatorial mounting was modified to a horizontal system. The equipment was carried by a truck and observations were made at six different sites, ranging in distance from eight to twenty-three miles in all directions from the city. In order to eliminate random errors due to variations in sky conditions from night to night, measurements of scattered city lights and the atmospheric extinctions were taken on at least two different sites during the same night and were repeated for six or seven different moonless nights at each site. As a result, it was concluded that the region about twelve miles south-southwest of the city is least affected by the artificial city light

    Three Color Photometry of the Total Eclipse of the Moon, December 29, 1963

    A three-color photometry of the eclipsed moon was carried out with a 12-inch reflector during the total eclipse on December 30. 1963. In order to examine the intensity and color distribution of refracted light in the umbral region, the observation was centered at Mare Crisium during the course of the eclipse. The decrease in brightness was found to be about 16 magnitudes for each of the three colors, and no significant reddening effect was observed during the totality. The magnitude differences between different colors appear to be nearly the same on the uneclipsed and the totally eclipsed moon

    Cyclin-dependent kinase-specific activity predicts the prognosis of stage I and stage II non-small cell lung cancer

    BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Even with complete resection, the prognosis of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer is poor due to local and distant recurrence, and it remains unclear which biomarkers are clinically useful for predicting recurrence or for determining the efficacy of chemotherapy. Recently, several lines of evidence have indicated that the enzymatic activity of cyclin-dependent kinases could be a clinically relevant prognostic marker for some cancers. We investigated whether the specific activity of cyclin-dependent kinases 1 and 2 could predict recurrence or death in early non-small cell lung cancer patients. METHODS: Patients with newly diagnosed, pathologically confirmed non-small cell lung cancer were entered into this blinded cohort study. The activity of cyclin-dependent kinases was determined in 171 samples by the C2PÂŽ assay, and the results were subjected to statistical analysis with recurrence or death as a clinical outcome. RESULTS: The Cox proportional hazards model revealed that the activity of cyclin-dependent kinase 1, but not 2, was a predictor of recurrence, independent of sex, age, and stage. By contrast, cyclin-dependent kinase 2 activity was a predictor of death, independent of sex and stage. CONCLUSION: This study suggested the possible clinical use of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 as a predictor of recurrence and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 as a predictor of overall survival in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. Thus, a combination of activity of cyclin-dependent kinases 1 and 2 is useful in decision-making regarding treatment strategies for non-small cell lung cancer after surgery.     Unilateral hippocampal CA3-predominant damage and short latency epileptogenesis after intra-amygdala microinjection of kainic acid in mice.

    Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common, intractable seizure disorder in adults. It is associated with an asymmetric pattern of hippocampal neuron loss within the endfolium (hilus and CA3) and CA1, with limited pathology in extra-hippocampal regions. We previously developed a model of focally-evoked seizure-induced neuronal death using intra-amygdala kainic acid (KA) microinjection and characterized the acute hippocampal pathology. Here, we sought to characterize the full extent of hippocampal and potential extra-hippocampal damage in this model, and the temporal onset of epileptic seizures. Seizure damage assessed at four stereotaxic levels by FluoroJade B staining was most prominent in ipsilateral hippocampal CA3 where it extended from septal to temporal pole. Minor but significant neuronal injury was present in ipsilateral CA1. Extra-hippocampal neuronal damage was generally limited in extent and restricted to the lateral septal nucleus, injected amygdala and select regions of neocortex ipsilateral to the seizure elicitation side. Continuous surface EEG recorded with implanted telemetry units in freely-moving mice detected spontaneous, epileptic seizures by five days post-KA in all mice. Epileptic seizure number averaged 1-4 per day. Hippocampi from epileptic mice 15 days post-KA displayed unilateral CA3 lesions, astrogliosis and increased neuropeptide Y immunoreactivity suggestive of mossy fiber rearrangement. These studies characterize a mouse model of unilateral hippocampal-dominant neuronal damage and short latency epileptogenesis that may be suitable for studying the cell and molecular pathogenesis of human mesial temporal lobe epilepsy
